When we were youngsters, my family bought a lot of film magazines, mostly Hollywood stuff, but one Indian magazine Filmfare was a must.
I vividly recall seeing lovely Shyama gracing several covers and inside spreads. She was always glamorous and sported the best fashions of the 50's. I found a lot of stars of that era most dignified and graceful. Shyama's trademark was the raising of her right eyebrow when she spoke and she still carries that trait, as evidenced in this interview. She had the loveliest eyes ever and spoke volumes with it to express her feelings. Her acting range was vast and she graced musicals, family dramas and comedies as well. She rose from the ranks to eventually become a leading lady. She starred with all the top leading men in her heyday: Dilip Kumar saab, Raj Kapoor, Shammi Kapoor, Guru Dutt and Bharat Bhusan to name a few. Her films that come to mind include: Tarana, Sharada, Zabak, Aar Paar and Jaanwar. There's a haunting song from Zabak [Teri duniya se door] that still lives on and every time I hear it tears well up in my eyes and I get goose flesh. Though she had gained weight over the years, her skin remained beautiful and unlined. She reminded me so much of the way Shabana Azmi now looks. Proud of her glorious Muslim heritage, her shimmering blue and silver outfit was an eye-catcher. Shyama will always be loved and her memory will always exist with movie fans of the 50's and 60's. Rest in peace dear lady, you were wonderful!

That Zamana she is talking about was different. I must have been 8 or 9 years of age. My one Mausi was very fond of movies and she used to take me with her whenever she used to go to see movies. I remember seeing movies like "Mein Bhi Ladki Hoon" Mein chup Rahoongi" etc. When Meena kumar starts crying these ladies in the audience used to weep and wipe their tears. Movies were mainly based on stories and the music. Symbolic things were one Hero and a Heroin and a Comedian. Later it was added my Helen's dance.

Shyamaji is too simple. The way she gave her deliberation is praiseworthy. One thing hasn't been mentioned is that she also worked with Ashoke Kumar in film "Bhai Bhai". We are eager to know when this interview was taken.

She was my favourite heroine though i am not from her era but i like old movies especially from 1950s to 1970s. I like her songs like ye ishak ishak hai, ae dil jara bata de tu kis pe aa gaya hai, ye lo main hari piya etc. she was so sweet and innocent even at this age. Her skin is so soft flowless without wrinkles even at this age. But i think this interview was recorded in early 1990s. I really liked her joyful smiling face and eyes. May she live in peace!

Shyama ji acted as Sridevi's mother in the movie Masterji with Rajesh Khanna as the hero. It was a superhit movie, but it was a remake of a Tamil movie directed by Bhagyaraj and acted as well with South Indian actress Urvashi, that movie name is mundani mudichchu...!!! A classic movie.

She was a great, great actress! Extremely camera-sensitive, extemporaneous, and natural, she never looked like she was "acting" out a "role". Besides, she was perhaps the most versatile actress too. Who can forget her fantastic role in Suwarnasundari? Actually, she was like water : she would assume any form like water, and that form would become Shyama...

If this lady, who was so famous during her days is still praisng Shri Devi she has reasons. Somewhere in 1978 I had seen one movie of Shridevi with Shobhan Babu and three times "Urvashi" award winner Sharda. Movie was "Kartika Deepam" Sridevi had left Sharda behind and was praised by the Media & the Press.
