7 Reasons Not to Retire in New Hampshire: In this episode we discuss OUR 7 reasons for choosing not to retire in New Hampshire (NH) the "Live Free or Die" state. We've lived here for 25 years and have made the decision to relocate to Eastern Tennessee. We have loved our time in NH raising our children as it's a safe place and the educational systems are great. This decision, which is one of our biggest, has trimmed 7 years off our retirement horizon! Ask yourself, would you move to be able to retire 7 years early and enjoy a much longer retirement?
    ABOUT US
We are Cherie & Jim, we have 2 grown children and 1 close. We are progressing towards retiring early. We have rapidly accelerated our retirement target ages building a model and living it. We lived paycheck to paycheck, until we took our future in our own hands! We believe in investing in yourself first, make yourself the priority! We also believe in owning your own existence, it's all your decisions. We have made many micro behavioral changes that have resulted in macro results.
We are sharing our journey as it could help others. We are transparent around our progress (shared monthly) and letting you in on our rituals. We cover The Good, The Bad and the "Ugs". We simply want every day to be Saturday.

Living in Alaska and looking 👀 to retire in the NH area (NH and Maine) Beginning to think twice about this decision. In Alaska, I don’t pay any property taxes, vehicle taxes or fishing/hunting fees. Want to move closer to family in the southwest. Thanks for the advice.

Depending on what is important to you (crime, costs, healthcare, climate) there are many states that could suit your needs. Bankrate puts out an annual ranking which is pretty interesting and you might find useful. I was just back from Vietnam and attended a dance in Portsmouth. Although I was probably the same age as others there, I felt so differently. A girl approached and asked me to dance. Then she told me where to sit. Later she told me when to get something to eat and drink. She's still bossing me around. She's in the living room now with the grandchildren. We've been married 47 years. Thank you, New Hampshire.

THANK YOU I had been considering moving to NH and you have really helped me be more informed ! Crazy how much they tax people to live on the woods !? What I realized was the "carrying costs of NH's 7 cold months (electricity, propane, etc...) are almost the cost of property taxes again ! That is frightening.... Thank you for the defibrillation 🙏

Thank you for watching! You are absolutely correct. It's almost August and we need to buy propane and heating fuel worth $3,000 in preparation to start winter. Those costs only cover the beginning of winter and you have to spend it already in August. It's far too costly to live here.

I love NH. Ski the east! Lack of diversity is a good reason to stay here too. It's been a great place for our family with a fun neighborhood for our kids, they have lots of good friends, awsome school, business environment has been good for me, but I'm not going to retire for at least 20 years so things will surely change. I enjoy hearing your experience and interested to learn of the other options people go for. Thank you for the research and data you put together for this!

I sold my home in NH 7 years ago and moved to SC for the usual things - lower cost of living, weather, recreation, golf. The house there was great, the culture not so much. And, you don't have to shovel snow but you're pretty much stuck inside for 6 months due to the heat and humidity. Plus even though property taxes were much lower the cost of homeowners insurance jumped from 2K to 6K last year. The building is out of control, the infrastructure is not keeping up - the next hurricane I can't see everyone getting out in time. Anyhoo, sold the house in SC a few months ago and moved back home to NH and am super happy I did.

We just know we want a much less expensive area to live to be able to retire early (15-17yrs early). It's far to expense in NH to do so! Worst case is we don't like it in TN and migrate somewhere else.

I grew up in NH and definitely miss the White Mountains and the Lakes Region. Love the hiking, skiing, fishing, hunting and the natural beauty. I have been living in Southeastern North Carolina for the past 18 years, about 2 miles from the open ocean. The summers here are brutal, but I have to admit that the weather is awesome from Oct-May. I did not realize the cost of living has become so high in NH. I have been retired for 2 years now, so that is a concern, if I was to move back there. Most of what you say makes sense, but the "diversity" part is not something that I would actively seek out, having lived in several places over the years, and travelled the world a few times over in my career. There are a lot of very dangerous, "diverse" sh*t holes in the world...be very thankful that you are not in one of them. Love what you are doing here, and will continue to follow your journey.

Appreciate you watching and the feedback. Weather & costs are our main factors for moving. We are moving to an equally safe area of the country to where we live now and save 1/3 of our our current expenses. We are moving just outside the smokey mountains and spent significant time there in the summer and due to the elevation and mountains its not significantly hot and not as humid as NH in the summer.

The more I hear about other people's property taxes, the more I get annoyed at how much we pay in Texas. Yes, 15k sounds like a lot but then you have 4 acres so it doesn't sound like a lot. I guess it would depend on the worth of your home and property as to whether it was higher than Texas or not. When I lived in Dallas, I lived in a 1500 sq ft home that was on about 1/3 of an acre and my taxes were approaching 10k. I don't know how high it would have gotten. The only reason it wasn't higher was that even though they keep increasing your property value (for a house not in tip top shape and more like falling apart), is because they cap your tax increase at 10 pct a year even though they raise the value. But I knew it would keep going up so I moved about 200 miles away to a suburb outside of Austin, only because I had some family in the central tx area. It's not any cheaper here except that I have less land and even though home values are just as high, they seemed to be more fair on home values. As far as diversity, that's a hard one. Dallas was a very diverse area and I never thought much about it until I moved and there is no diversity where I live. I did not like that. It feels boring but maybe I'm getting used to it. I still miss the diversity but I don't miss the crime and I love the attention that we get from our police department. I hope that doesn't change although with growth, I'm sure it will. I hate that diversity might sometimes cause more complications but I think it does. But, if city or suberb stays a reasonable size, I think it can have great diversity and safety but I think growth is what brings uncertainty. And yes, if you are moving somewhere that you like and it allows you to retire 7 years earlier, that's great. Or if you move and you love where you move, then if you don't hate working, then keep working for a better retirement because retirement finances can chance at the drop of a hat and it's best to keep growing your social security.

Thanks for watching and commenting. We do know that TX and CA also have high property taxes. We did bring 3 kids through the school systems so it was worth it to us as the schools are great up here in NH. But now that we do not use the school systems, the taxes hurt a lot more. "Diversity" is a trigger online and we knew it could spark some constructive comments and not so constructive comments. Some like it the way it is and has been, some want different. Appreciate the constructive view on it. As for moving, you are right... 7 years is a dramatic to cut off your working years. If we want to keep working, we will... if not, well then we stop.

    1. insulate your house drops the heating bill 50%
    2. subdivide your 4 acres to 3 acre bird sanctuary & donate to the town reducing your property tax by 50% in turn no new building on that land.
    3. change your lighting to to all LEDs reducing electric by 50%
    4. Install radiated heating in 1st floor...reduce heating costs another 20%
    5. Rent your house to family member for $1 a month while your a snow bird in Florida... to take advantage of federal tax write offs.
    6. Lastly.... if you compare dollar for dollar whatever zip code you move to..& culture + privacy you might want to think again... did i mention sales tax or state income tax oh yes...that's zero..You have to do the math long form.

Born, raised, educated in NH... then moved away... traveled the world. Now retired... returned and bought a lake house in NH... also have a place in MA... both in rural locations... can't deal with metro Boston traffic... split my time between the two. Yup, for 6 months of the year the weather in NH stinks... same for MA... you better have indoor hobbies. I stopped skiing about a decade ago so winters can be long. Yup, NH property taxes are high... but they are in MA as well... My NH electric bill is less than half that at my MA property... and I'm running heat pumps in NH. Overall the cost of living is a wash between the two places... with NH maybe being a little cheaper... its also pretty much a wash between the other places I've lived in the US... different states get your money in different ways. And yes, NH can be a diversity and cultural desert... but so are a lot of other places in the US. One needs to seek it out here. I'd suggest one retire in Europe if they want to be surrounded by such things. Vacationing there scratches that itch for me. Politically, NH is surprisingly diverse... one can hang out in Portsmouth with the liberal lefties or go to Gilmanton and chum with the libertarian, free-stater Trump thumpers... Personally, I avoid both. Ya NH isn't perfect... far from it... to each their own... but t's working for me at the moment... and I never tire of watching the sun rises and sunsets off my dock... when it's not cold an raining. ...and you kids, stay off my lawn.

Bought a larger, more updated home with cash in a much more walkable neighborhood with far superior public transit (very important for us) for about half what we sold for in NH. Thank you so much! We love budgeting as well. We have been budgeting for years, but have taken it to an entirely different level the past few years by switching our mindset from everything were taught in 50-20-30. (Essential Spending-Saving-Wants spending). Pre-retirement it should be Saving-Essential Spending-Wants Spending. Since we’ve made that shift, we’ve eliminated all debt and are saving like crazy and the compounding interest is doing its thing. We just wrapped up our March budget and are going to drop a video this week with the update. Really great to meet you!

Having no sales and income taxes partially make up for the high property tax. All states in New England are expensive, including heat, utilitites and expensive real estate. I am considering retirement in NH and would take the NH cold over the heat and humidity of a southern state. Also, no income tax or sales tax is a huge advantage. Everyone needs to buy stuff and if your retirement savings are in a conventional IRA or 401k, you have to pay tax on that money when you withdraw it. Your property tax bill doesn’t seem that bad to me, nor do apartment rents. In Manhattan you can pay over $1000 a month just to rent a parking space.

NH is the most affordable of the New England states when measured in aggregate tax burden wise. The high property taxes are to be expected in a state with no sales and no income taxes. Plus if property taxes are a concern, they vary by town, and you can search around for towns with far lower rates and as a retiree, what do you really care if a town with low tax rate has mediocre schools that you will never use anyway. I have multiple properties in Maine, I come originally from MA and I have lived in California for almost 30 years, if I was retiring to New England, NH would be my first choice.

Be careful what you wish for on the diversity issue. As a white man in California, I am a minority and have been on receiving end of racism. There are some bad hombres out here who had nothing to bring except their own bad behavior.

Complaining about power outages? Uh, 25yrs there and you don't have a generator? And don't like the cold? Again: 25yrs and you grew up there and it still sucks? High prop taxes? I've got 1-3/4 acre w/1350sqft home in NJ: $15K a year! Uh, 'cultural diversity'? Let's see how much you embrace the overload of cultural diversity you'll face outside of that bucolic bubble when it's litterally suffocating you. (Where I am, our escalating 'cultural diverse' poplation has taken over our streets, stores & local government. Just wait.) Electric/utility bills too high? Tennessee is almost the complete climate opposite of NH. 7months of cold, you say where you are now? Try 7mnths of heat and intolerable humidity in Tenn. Quite possibly the cost of running the ac an equal number of months (if not more) that you ran your heat in NH balances out. Having said all that, I truly hope you both enjoy and are at peace w/your new digs and surroundings. Stay healthy. That's the key no matter where you live!!!

Thank you for watching and sharing. We will miss a lot about NH, just not the cold. Your property taxes are insane. We know NY, CA and TX are really high as well. Where we are moving in TN is not unbearably hot, its in the mountains in high elevation. We've been there in summer (July & August) a few years and believe it or not it was actually hotter in NH with higher humidity during those same timeframes. Middle TN and west has brutal heat, which we want no part of.

Where do you live in NH? If you're up on God's country in the north you're gonna get a lots of snow. Move south and it's better. Move to a different county and your property taxes will be lower. NH has income tax, except interest and dividends and that's being phased out. Has no sales tax either. Reason to move is that the state is infested with liberals that moved from MA to NH, bringing their loony ideas with them. Weather kinda sucks but you get the four seasons. Gonna get hotter down south due to global warming. NH property is high and so is rentals. But you're gonna find that anywhere in New England. All of New England has high utility costs. It sucks. Maybe you should run a weed farm to off set those costs? :) Healthcare is great but expensive. Cultural diversity? What kind of diversity are you talking about? Gay parades? Ethnic melting pot? Perhaps you live out in the middle of nowhere. Go to Manchester and you can get that. Or skip across the border to Lowell or Lawrence. If you're bored with the environment then absolutely move. People move to NH for the nature. It would be like moving to Bozeman, MT and say it's boring because the only night life are moose and bears. Well, you could go to Manchester. It's got decent night life. But crime is kind of high and it's really just booze / club city. Not much in terms of cultural places. As for people being "icy" and more "conservative" to themselves, I agree with you. But that's all of New England. Now if you're talking conservative, NH used to be a conservative state but you'd have to go back to the 60-'70's to see that. The Massholes have taken over the state. It's not conservative anymore.
Where you moving to? You check the pros and cons of that state? It sounds like you have given this a lot of thought. And as you know, a new house with a lake view in NH is gonna run a lot of bucks. Something decent (not wow) you're probably talking 500k. Good for you that you folks found a place where it's pretty much going to be a wash financially and you'll be in a place you'll love.

Thanks for watching and sharing! We live in south-central NH. We are relocating to Eastern TN outside the Smoky Mountains. We are estimating the cost savings per month to be around $1,800 in taxes & utilities. It's such a significant difference in costs. You are right about all of New England being "icy" and standoffish... we have spent many years in CT & MA and have experienced the same.

So accurate. I’ve lived in 6 countries and spoken 5 languages. I lived in all the NE states, CT and NYC. NH is my least favorite in NE. I presently live in VT and have lived here on and off since 72. It’s my favorite. Each state has its better areas. Unfortunately those areas are usually the more expensive ones. The worst part of NH is that it’s right wing and going further right every year. It’s loaded with Trumpers, bikers and militia types. It’s Guns, Gears, God and Guts. A place where men are men and goats are afraid of them. If you’re a red neck, under educated, never traveled, racist, love a police state, then this place is for you.

I liked living in NH for awhile, but it is kind of boring and expensive. The shopping is terrible. The food is blah. There aren't a lot of brown people so getting my natural hair done or getting products for me requires me to take long drives which is annoying.
This state could be so much better, but the leadership is worthless. The costs of the homes and apartments are ridiculous and it just feels kind of hopeless.
I love the weather most of the time and I haven't had a problem with the people. I'm friendly so I smile at people, have random talks with strangers, and hold open doors at the gas station or a restaurant. I don't see a lot of people doing it, but it does happen from time to time.
I hope the state gets better, but I doubt it will, especially if we keep voting the way we do and keep allowing the same rich and greedy people to enact worthless legislation or pass up on ways to grow the states economy.
    Good luck to you both.
