- Arthritis is a general term that refers to a group of more than 100 different types of joint diseases or conditions that cause inflammation, pain, stiffness, and swelling in the joints. It can affect people of all ages and is one of the leading causes of disability worldwide. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disease that primarily affects the joints but can also have systemic effects on other parts of the body. In autoimmune diseases like RA, the immune system, which is supposed to protect the body from infections and harmful substances, mistakenly attacks healthy tissues, particularly the synovium (the lining of the membranes that surround the joints).
