I am going to be entering a new era for my hair. I have colored my hair for over 30yrs (it has only been curly for about 5 yrs) and due to some physical limitations it is becoming increasingly difficult. I have decided to grow out my color and see what happens. Wish me luck!
I’ve realized with low density hair less is often more! Even in extreme humidity! -Coming from a South Florida curly! ❤ No matter what gel I use I always have “flash drying” and I’ve probably tried 50 in my last 5 years of my Curly Hair Journey! I only use cream stylers because of this! But cream stylers that have decent hold to at least get me to day 4 with minimal refresh in the way a light hold gel would! Can we please have a video on Creams since this one was mainly gels? That would be so helpful! 😊 I’m currently using the Curlsmith Protein Cream and it has great hold! But I’ve been using it for 4 years now ever since the Devacurl debacle and when I found your page! ❤ I would love some other options! This was so needed!
I use the the Verb Ghost heat protector cream then the Verb foaming gel, brush style, then glaze over and scrunch in the Quidad gel (in the red bottle) and I get great long lasting results.
I use Mop top curly hair custard. It’s definitely a one and done and a little bit of water refreshes the second day and the third day I use a mister for the water instead of a full rinse.
I like the Mop Top custard too. The Mielle Pomegranate and Honey is another great custard. Also, Not Your Mother's recently came out with a custard that has surprising hold. They label it as a level 4 hold on the jar - stronger than their level 3 gel and I agree.
The bee girl honey custard from The Doux! We have different hair types but that stuff works amazing as a one and done styler! Also, if you have it to splurge, the strong hold cream gel from davines is also really good. ☺
You inspired me to use the Umberto Giannini jelly alone . It worked out great ! This past year I bought all my gels with the curl creams . Now I’m thinking my hair likes just a gel . Maybe a tiny bit of curl cream but I’m pretty sure it was weighing down my fine hair to much .
Another great video! Although I would have chosen the Camille Rose Curlmaker over Uncle Funky's Daughter. They're very similar, but I get slightly more hold with the Camille Rose product. Also, I would include AG Recoil on this list. I know everyone considers Recoil to be a curl cream, but I consider it to be more of a cream-gel because I get a surprising amount of hold from it, by itself.

Loved it!! It’s the first gel I have been able to get away without having to do any refresh on day 2 and went into day 3 just needing a light touch up. Usually have to wash by day 3 as my hair is too dry. Went back to Ouidad…and found it to dry my hair out in comparison 🙁 Maybe I needed more leave in conditioner? Love the Ouidad gel/cream for refresh touch ups!! Appreciate you always sharing such honest and great info!!
I am a big fan of the UFD Curl Magic. I have low to medium porosity wavy hair. It works better for me when I am a bit heavy handed with it. Sometimes in the really humid weather I will layer a harder holding gel on top of it.

I've been using the Ouidad Extra Hold gel for only a short while, but I love it. I live in South Florida, where we are currently experiencing an unusually hot and humid summer, and this gel works in this climate. I do use Ouidad Leave In Conditioner first, as the combination gives me a softer effect, but I am very pleased with these products. Thank you so much for your always excellent and informative videos! They've been a great help. Sometimes strangers tell me they love my hair, which is nice to hear.
My strongest hold gel by far is Giovanni La hold styling gel strong hold…I haven’t used that too much as a one and done but I am sure it can be done. But I have used some leave ins that also have hold so to add that with a strong gel is my best bet.
Love your channel..new curly girl. Short bob...I love uncle funky but can you also recommend a hairspray to pair with it for extra hold and volume. My shorter bangs need some better control.
Hey Gena. I have low porosity, low density, fine hair. I limit the amount of protein in my hair because it just dries it out. I live in Colorado as well which is dry. I have a shampoo and a deep conditioner that has protein and I use the Ouidad gel you mentioned once in a while. I definitely need protein sometimes but can’t use it all the time. Can you do a video that shows someone like me how often to use protein products and what products (cleansing products vs leave-ins) would be best and when. Thank you. ❤
I am curious why you don’t typically recommend Innersense products? I really like them but it can be confusing to know which products are best for different hair types. I am sure your expertise would be super helpful!
I like their products! I just haven’t found a perfect gel from them yet. I like the I Create Hold and the I Create Curl Memory but it doesn’t contain humidity blocking ingredients so I can’t use them year round where I live.
Thanks for sharing, I was wondering if you tried The Doux hair mousse. It has hold and moisture in one product. It’s one of my favorite mousses. It actually holds up in humidity . Love your videos, very informative

Gena. How do you feel about Wen hair care? I used to use Wen and switched to Ouidad but bought a bottle of 613 and used it this week. Definitely different then what I’m used too. I’m so bad at making my curls look pretty no matter how hard I try!!!
I’ve been using Wen for about 13-14 years. Started my curl journey last November. I do use a clarifying once a month just to reset from curly products I use. I also still use their smoothing oil and finishing cream. Wen still works for me 😊

Right now I’m using Treluxe. I bought the bundle on their website that includes a curl primer, styling serum and hi def curling gel. I really like the not your mothers line but I have tried other and still go back to the NYM line. Treluxe is working for me right now. I love the Wen finishing crème and smoothing oil for days after I wash my hair, I only wash once a week. I do have some frizz this summer but it’s not a deal breaker that will make me go back to blowing out my hair, for me wearing curls is still easier 😊
You can use it on its own which is why I featured it in this video! I also sometimes pair it with their Recoil cream or Fresh Definer if I want more moisture

Love that custard! It's a bit sticker than I like (because of the honey), but it is a great one and done styler.

What are your thoughts on Moroccan oil products. I'm allergic to everything but that product and I'm tired of using myself as a guinea pig. Lol

No disrespect, but you seem to have a few grays, do you color your hair? I used to color but the strong grays always came through anyway…
The curlsmith restoring gel provides absolutely ZERO hold for my curls I have to top it with a strong hold gel.
What about cantu curl activitor?
It doesn’t have hold since it’s a curl cream so I don’t consider it a one and done 😕
