Low Income Senior Housing & Senior Citizen Housing
Public housing or Section 8 is a low-income housing complex that is managed by the HUD. This type of housing is available only to low-income applicants including families, seniors, and those with a disability. If you are a senior, you are most likely going to be placed in a senior low-income Section 8 apartment.
    Information for Senior Citizens
Looking for housing options for yourself, an aging parent, relative, or friend? Do some research first to determine what kind of assistance or living arrangement you need; what your health insurance might cover; and what you can afford. Then check here for financial assistance resources and guides for making the right choice.

Section 202 Supportive Housing for the Elderly - as implied by its name, Section 202 is the most appropriate option for the elderly as the units are designed to accommodate elderly individuals’ physical challenges. Care and supportive services, such as meals, housecleaning, and transportation are available at these residences.
    Assisted Living Conversion Program
    Section 231 Mortgage Insurance
Section 232 and 232/223(f) Mortgage Insurance
Section 504 Rural Housing Repair and Rehabilitation Grants
    Section 502
    • Rural Housing Loan (Direct)
    • Direct Housing Natural Disaster Loan
    • Guaranteed Rural Housing Loan
Section 504 Rural Housing Repair and Rehabilitation Loan
Section 515 Rural Rental Housing Loan
    Section 521 Rural Rental Assistance
Section 538 Guaranteed Rural Rental Housing
Housing Choice Voucher Program - currently abbreviated as HCVP, and formerly referred to as Section 8, this option provides vouchers that can be used at a multitude of public housing properties. It is more appropriate for elderly individuals because the participant has greater flexibility to choose a unit that works for their abilities. Additionally, this program is the largest of the three and therefore has a greater likelihood of having open spots for new participants.
    Project-Based Rental Assistance
Public Housing - of the three, this option is the least relevant to elderly or frail individuals who require both housing and assistance. No care assistance is available, nor are the residences designed with the intent of accommodating frail, elderly persons. This may be an option for those seniors who can live independently, and if availability allows, for choice of housing units.
Low Income Senior Housing LOW-INCOME HOUSING TAX CREDIT (LIHTC)- Only individuals 62 or older are eligible for low income senior housing. Applicants must also have an income of less than 50% of the median income for their area. Housing is mainly provided to elderly persons that require daily assistance with living or need regular caretaking. Seniors must pay up to 30% of the rent for their unit.
Section 207 Mortgage Insurance for Manufactured Home Parks
    Section 207/223(f) Mortgage Insurance
    Section 213 Mortgage Insurance
    Section 221(d)(3) Below-Market Interest Rate
Section 221(d)(3) and (d)(4) Mortgage Insurance
    Section 236 Rental
Cooperative Housing or "co-op" is a type of residential housing option that is actually a corporation whereby the owners do not own their units outright. Instead, each resident is a shareholder in the corporation based in part on the relative size of the unit that they live in.

In NJ, other than rooms, there are very few small single bedroom or studio apartments available anymore for single seniors or those on disability approaching senior age... Most apartment complexes cater to young single mothers with multiple children... Even some of what used to be senior living now lets in the single moms because of the sheer numbers of women in that particular predicament...

Born and raised in NYC. Just turned 65. Looking for "what's next". Would love to stay in, or close to NYC but don't want all the "action". I'm in good shape and healthy. Want to move where people care about each other. Where neighbors are neighborly but respect each others space. A place where there's more of nature than concrete.

Great video! My aunt is 68 years old and makes $1200/month. She also collects social security. She is about to lose the house she is currently renting because the owner is going to sell it. I don't know where to start to help her. She just keeps saying she's going to be homeless and it's breaking my heart

I think it's a sad state of affairs when most people who have worked their entire lives, paid their taxes, never had to use any social service EVER and now that their aging, BECAUSE IF GOD's WILLING, WE ALL WILL GET TO THAT AGE AT SOME POINT IN OUR LIVES, cannot even count on the people who makes all the decisions on how we should live or die WON'T DO ANYTHING TO assist those elderly people. I myself will be falling into the same category in about 3 years. I've been working my entire life, making decent money, joined my companies 401k program 20 years ago and still tried to throw a few pennies to the side JUST IN CASE SOME S^&% happens. However, the way the economy is now, it still won't be enough money to live half way decent. I, along with a lot of other people did exactly what we were told to do, and that is plan for our old, retirement future. And where have that gotten us? .I'll wait...smh. Yet, the Powers that Be in this country still sit high, look low and laugh because it doesn't affect THEM AT ALL! And it never will. Working class people will always be stepped on an over.

I am retired on SS and cannot afford living in California, section 8, or any voucher is 10 or more years out. Im looking for affordable housing in the Northeast US. I would like to live in senior apartments. The importance of having your peers to socialize with, activities, and the quiet are desired. I understand I will not be able to get any income based housing vecause Im not a resident. Do I need to rent a room until I gain residency? I assume that is a year. As a single older woman, that terrifies me. I can afford 550.00 a month if I go by the 1/3 rule, but I already know I can live comfortably oaying 750.00 a month. Any suggestions on how to get around that 1/3 rule? Any suggestions on how to find something until I gain residency? Do I have to get residency? Thanks for any help.❤

I’m a 67 yo disabled veteran living in a old broken down motorhome. I currently live in NY on Long Island but planning to move to Ocala, FL after surgery at the VA Hospital in Northport, NY. I qualify for a VA guaranteed mortgage and the $40,000 VA grant. Are you familiar with this stuff and are you familiar with Ocala, Florida and Florida’s programs? I think for me a townhouse or condo would be best. My only income is Social Security.

I live in Ocala, I’m a senior currently looking for an affordable housing now that my landlord is selling. My income I’m finding is a tad too high for housing, just by $2,000 a year, my income is too low to afford the high rents here. I don’t see Ocala offering much, unless you’re into horses, there is nothing to do here and I’m actually okay with that. I don’t know where I’m going to end up, maybe a tent, Best to you
