Is this the end of America's love affair with pickup trucks? Automotive News reports large pickup truck sales falling 4% in total during Q1 2024, and Ray & Zach aren't the least bit surprised. After all, the signs have been there for several months now, haven't they?

Especially from just "bells and whistles". No, there was a temporary shortage from the supply chain which caused a drastic increase. The manufacturers decided they like making all that extra profit now that the supply chain issues are no longer there and raised their sticker price to what people were paying during the pandemic etc.

I remember there were a couple Hellcats sitting in the dealerships for about $65,000. I was thinking, wow that's a lot of money for a toy, but I knew it was a niche market, so big deal. I never thought just a few years later, the average pickup truck would be the same price! So now today, with the CPI coming out higher, it's not going to help truck sales. There is still part of me that goes conspiratorial and thinks this is a covert effort to push people out of gas guzzlers and into more economical vehicles. Like you said, the average person realizes that you don't need tons of steel to get you back and forth to work for many jobs. I drive a 2019 Toyota Yaris for commuting. 45 mpg, and it's all I really need much of the time. However, I also carry construction supplies for projects, and tow a 20' trailer with a New Holland tractor with attachments, so I need a truck occasionally. My plan is to get a good full size truck, like a used V8 Tundra, and use it only when I need to haul, or tow, and basically hold onto it as long as possible. Meanwhile, I will drive econo boxes for normal transit.

I got my new 2016 F150 XLT 4x4 for $36k, which was $13k off the $49k MSRP. Back then, Ford, Chevy, and Ram were always offering $10k+ in incentives for the full size trucks and almost nothing for mid-size trucks, which meant the full size trucks cost the same (or even less) than the mid size. Now it would cost $65k MSRP for an equivalently spec'd F150 XLT, whereas a 2024 Ranger XLT is $45k. It sure seems that Americans were spending like crazy during and post pandemic to deal with their pandemic frustrations, which increased demand while there was limited supply. The automakers took advantage of this and decided to jack up prices as high as they could, because so many of us are hooked on our full size, super comfortable trucks. Like everyone is saying, they will keep charging those prices as long as people keep paying.

I should also mention that my F150 has been my favorite vehicle of all time, but now I have low cylinder pressure which is costing me at least $2k and if that doesn't work, then it's $10k for a new engine. Spending $10k on a replacement engine for an 8 year old vehicle with 82k miles seems crazy until you look at the alternatives. Based on this channel (and my desire to not accrue sizable debt), it simply doesn't make sense to be either a new or a used full size pickup right now. Glaring design issues including big gaps in trip pieces that allow water to collect inside the doors, and serious issues with the new turbocharged engine that is causing them to fail catastrophically. Here in Canada when I bought a 2019 Ram rebel reasonably optioned out was $70,000 and change. When I went to trade my truck the 2021 model was near $78,000. So I decided to with 2021 F-150 which had a price of $62,000 which was the XLT Sport with the FX4 package, by the way I had this truck leased for 3 years. Upon my lease ending the same truck only difference was it was 2023 was $75,000 so I decided go with just an XLT Sport without the FX4 and had the 3.5l ecoboost and 3.55 gears which my previous truck was the 5.0l and 3.73 gears and still cost $72,000. I looked at other trucks like the 2023 Ram rebel similar to the 2019 I had before and pretty much the same options as before was $91 or $92,000 and that's before tax and with 6.89% interest which is insane. 1/2 ton trucks aren't worth this kinda money.

Good info and such good news. As the new truck prices plummet the used truck prices will naturally decline also, and I will be in the market in about 6 months. So I’m looking forward to saving some money.

All I want is a bare bones full size truck with a radio, ac, and a comfy seat. Exposed metal in the cab, commercial carpet, as little plastic as possible, good fuel mileage, and a price tag under 20k.

My 2014 F150 seems to have succumbed to the rust belt much quicker than my 2000 E150. Couple that with the insane prices and that’s a recipe for me to simply living with rust and for longer between purchases.

Not only are full sized trucks over priced. They no longer last. Seems like they all have issues. It's sad that these new vehicles won't last 100k. Many are in for repair before 30k..... What's the auto industry doing?😢😢😢😢
    Sad times.

I bought my last one in 2021. When I pay this one off no more. Not sure what’s next but I’m through going that deeply in debt for a truck. I paid 50 for a lt trailboss with a trade I financed 40000 I will not do it again. I guess I’m a used customer once I wear this one out.

I searched for a basic truck at my local dealers. They don't stock them! So I drove 500 miles to the commercial fleet dealer in Omaha to order a basic F-350 fleet truck that fit my application. The local dealers are only wanting to force you into a Lariat or Platinum with a diesel. I didn't need that. What I got is more than I need.

Regardless of what many CZcamsrs try to portray the full-size truck market is very healthy and will continue to be in the future... sales are just down slightly...
