I looked the lyrics up as well but can’t decipher exactly the meaning of the song. Would you enlighten me?

@@PlaygroundProducing123 I can't help but think about Blinding Light too when I think about this one. I feel like it's about people who use religion to control you/keep you down and then the reaction to those same people expecting some sort of help from you when they're in need.
I think the cleansing wave is freedom from these people, possibly by some sort of separation/removing them from your life. The first verse describes how the beliefs they hold in such high regards causes pain to everyone around them and even drive loved ones away for good "That's exactly why your daughter left" The next part is just taunting the believer.
In the chorus I think Bryan is setting a boundary. He states his desire to be free and in order to be free he tells the believer "Don't Reach For Me"
In the next verse he's talking about the believer spreading his false beliefs and how Bryan believed it and that gave the believer power over Bryan. I think the "I never gave a fuck" part is just a defiant response to the traumatic memory of letting them hold that power.
Then yeah. Repeat chorus and at the end we're just pissed at the lying abuser and we'll cut off their fucking tongue so they can't spread their bullshit anymore.
Obviously it can be interpreted anyway and I don't think it has to relate to purely religious contexts, but also with the band being from the south I can't help but think they were surrounded by evangelical type Christians who abused the teachings of God and used them for hate.
This song is really cool. I don't really talk to my dad much anymore for reasons that make this song very cathartic. I suppose it's more related to political beliefs than religious ones, but he's leaned into religion in a way recently that makes the song feel like it was written just for me haha.

It's kinda not fair how good they are.
That Counterparts hoodie you're wearing. I had the same one. Someone stole it from me like 10 years ago. Still not over it yet.

When people still subscribe to organized religion after the atrocious shit they've done and the human lives they leave dead or traumatized for life.... Its actually sick.
