My dream is to become and work as an interpreter for the UN. More than anything I would like to be in that room of the UN meetings. In a couple of years I will be there, living my dream - a promise to myself

Back in 2003 where internet is still not readily & widely available, I wanted to study for this but couldn't find local university in Borneo/Malaysia to further my interest. Now I keep going to video like this, just to keep myself inspired. Now I'm just an English teacher, who knows Mandarin, Bahasa Malaysia, Iban & Bidayuh, also took 3 short French courses during university though.

^ That's interpreting. Translation deals with what is written. Interpreting deals with what is being spoken and heard.

I know this is kind of late, but I was still wondering if there is any
kind of translator that could give me advice? I just got out of high
school and am thinking about starting to go to college in order to make a
degree in norwegian so I can become a translator. However, every single
person that I shared this thought with seemed suspect and asked "What
are you gonna do with your degree once you're done? How can you make a
living out of that?" which majorly insecured me. I tried to find answers
and ended up here somehow, I would be grateful for any kind of advice I
can get in order to receive some sort of insight into how it works.

Just remember loving English/Norwegian is not enough. Loving being with people around is not enough. Loving different cultures & traveling is not enough. Feeling yourself "sophisticated" for working at the UN is not enough, either. First and foremost, you have to LOVE interpreting itself, at the full meaning this concept may mean: To love grammar, to love accuracy, to love linguistics, plus excellent abilities when carrying a message comes. Why? Basically, because you are NOT a parrot, you are an interpreter. Coming to reach the UN is really, really, really hard, so if your "dream" just "frames" around an "I - want - to - work - at - the - UN - Otherwise - I - don't - want - anything", consider to think of other profession. You have to be willing to stay at the scenario of translations first (many Interpreters begin as translators, as far as I know) it is the normal way. And, at the same time you will be translating (and then interpreting) cooking recipes, TV user's manuals, curriculums (resumés) and/or tough information from the field of petroleum distillation area, you will have to be learning marketing and finances to keep your job alive. I don't define myself as a "dream-killer", but I just want to keep your feet in ground. I didn't become a Tr/Int. I am not frustrated or anything. I love languages, literature, grammar, syntax, phonetics, linguistics, translating and interpreting. I considered these aspects beforehand, and this and that made me a proud plumber now. Greetings from Chile, South America.

People question something because their view is very limited. They don't see beyond and think that's the end. Nothing more to it. Same happened with me. But it's not true. You create the scope to something. You research learn and dig deeper to contribute . You make the scope. Sometimes people would really anger me for disturbing my positive and open minded outlook. But i need to be loving in order to not be influenced but just smile at them with good wishes. So much can be done with anything. This is a huge world . A lot of people are needed for various activities. Whether you be a translator , a writer, a teacher, a helper in understanding history through language, a news reporter, a speaker, whatever. Language is a powerful tool. It's a great ability . Be confident. You are a unique person with different mind. And you grow only stronger in difficult situations!!

You need to have a translation and/or interpreter bachelor's degree/certificate, have at least five years of working experience, and i believe that you have to know french as well (although there may be an exception for english-arabic translators/interpreters, but I'm not sure).
      Then you have to apply.

    God 'IS' Love ❤
The Almighty God loves all of his children .
His judgments are righteous. He loves the sinner but rejects the Sin .
Holy , Holy , Holy is thy Lord Almighty. "Praise God "
Therefore you must know that Sin is an ABOMINATION to the Lord.
And "No" sin shall Enter The Kingdom of God .
1 Corinthians 6:9-11 King James Version (KJV)
9 Know ye not that the UNrighteous shall NOT inherit the Kingdom of God?
    Be not deceived:
    neither the sexually immoral,
    neither fornicators,
    nor idolaters,
    nor adulterers,
    nor effeminate,
    nor homosexuals,
nor abusers of themselves with mankind,
    10 Nor thieves,
    nor covetous,
    nor drunkards,
    nor revilers,
    nor extortioners,
shall inherit the kingdom of God.
11 And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of our Lord Jesus and by the spirit of God.
🔊 All must "REPENT"/ turn from sin to enter thy kingdom of God.
"JESUS" is the Redeemer of sins, The "Only" way to the Father in Heaven...
    God loves you... ❤
