Well, here it is, the rather delayed LDV T60 Max Owner towing review I promised about 12 months ago.
It's been a long time coming but it does take time to choose, order and receive a caravan. Thankfully our van only took 6 months.. the other six months we can probably notch up to too busy driving instead of choosing a caravan!
We're all the way down in Mandurah for this one and it's a mix of review and adventure! Hope you enjoy it because we sure did, and we're excited to see where we can get to and what 4x4 adventures we can embrace. đ
Thanks for reading and of course for watching!

Really excited for this next adventurous step for our family! Been in the works for a while now, absolutely stoked it's finally a reality. đ
Thanks Dicey Ricey looking forward to more about towing and your travels
Iâm running a t60 pro max manual and looking at different vans atmđđđ
Thanks mate! Weâre looking forward to them too.
Good work for getting the pro, that extra payload will be handy!
And man, good luck choosing a van! I swear thereâs about 50 different van companies at the moment each with their own pros & cons. đł
Great video mate, well done
Heyyy, Thankyou. Appreciate it! đ
When I go camping and put 2 dirt bikes on the back I can feel how noticeably different it drives.
Yeah I reckon a suspension upgrade might be in the near future for the T60. I find it to be a better drive with the weight.
Bikes and camping go hand in hand I reckon! đïž
What bikes are you running?
Awesome video as always mate đđđđđ
Thanks mate! Appreciate you watching and commenting! Still got that snorkel envy of your rig! đđ
What were the measurements of wheel arches before hooking up?
What's the weights of the van?
855mm in the front, 905mm at the rear.
Annd we got the caravan up to 2900kg although most of the trip was done at 2700kg.
Great video man! đ
Thank my man! Bit gutted we couldnât join in with your latest video though!
White gum Farm is definitely on the to-do list. Even though your rig made it look easy. đ
@DiceyRicey next time my friend! And believe me not all of it is easy đ€Ł
I never tow in overdrive " 5th" gear" in my 2013 d max.
4th gear most of the time o drive on flat roads.
Never have an issue with the throttle controller when towing our manta ray 19 foot van
As for fuel consumptions i dont go by what the read out say on the dash.
I do the fugures out on paper and most of the time those figures are around 3 to 4 lts 100k' lower than what the read our says .
Get your self a scan gauge too to check coolant temps andcthe transmission temperatures
Yeah I did think about getting a gauge might invest in one sooner rather than later. The T60 has a seperate transmission cooler now in the newer models so thatâs bound to help although itâd be good to know for sure!
Any good value ones youâd recommend?
Thanks for watching and commenting! đ
Hi mate, liking the vids and now considering one, I may have missed the info but what fuel economy are you getting when not towing?
Hey there Thankyou, and Thankyou for watching and commenting.
Weâre sitting on high 9âs when not towing at the moment. 9.7L - 9.9L/100.
Avoid towing in overdrive! 6th manual at 90kmh and your transmission will last much longer! Overheating your torque converter is a killer and buy a OBD2 reader and Torque app for your phone to monitor transmission temp. Hope this helps Nigel
Nice tips! Iâve seen some Prados have overdrive issues so I was curious to see about the T60. As you say any torque converter isnât going to like overdrive towing. Iâll look into the reader.
What reader are you using when towing the boat? đ
@@DiceyRicey I got an OBD2 dongle from Supacheap Auto and it Bluetooth's to my phone. It monitors about 50 parameters
I cooked the torque converter in my Holden Adventra over a few years, didn't struggle with power but it gets too hot in the transmission and parts warp and seals will leak if the get over 100â°C in time.
@@sailingcitrinesunset4065 Iâll check this out! đ
@@DiceyRicey Was about $45 I think and I leave it plugged in all the time
Don't believe the computer consumption. I've just returned from a jaunt down south. Indicated 14 litres 100k but actual was 15.5 towing Jayco Journey Outback 17.55. It always miscalculates but it's still a good result.
Yeah I hear you! Iâve just pulled up at muchea after towing down against the wind and itâs showing 14.5L but I reckon itâs probably closer to 17L judging by the fuel usage.
Iâll have to do a proper calculation sometime not relying on the computer.
Thanks for watching and commenting.
Where in the Wheatbelt are you going to take your new caravan?
Thereâs a 1000km rough loop out there that weâre going to do. Pull up at a different spot each night all off grid. Should be a bit of fun!
.. must remember to tighten bolts after corrugations though. đ
Iâve got the previous model of T60 with the 2.8 - she gets warm towing, especially on hit days. Anything like this happen with the Max?
Hey mate, thanks for watching and commenting.
Nah the T60 doesnât move in terms of engine temp.
Iâll have to get a monitor and Chuck it in to see what the transmission temps are like. The T60 Max has a trans cooler so Iâd imagine itâll be ok.
That aside, yeah, the T60 goes fine. Spent about two hours on hills and all G! đ
Never understood why peeps buy a caravan when they get minimal use unless doing the big lap. Anyhow good luck with itâŠ
Thank you! And donât tempt me to do the lap! đ Iâd do it in a heartbeat!
Me again. Don't want to rain on your parade but don't forget the max.rear axle load on your LUX is only 1540kgs. Your tow ball weight will impact dreadfully. TBW of 300kgs will correspond to approx 450kgs being added to your rear axle due to the weight coming off the front axle via the rear axle acting as a fulcrum (see-saw effect). Check your numbers before spending heaps on mods.
Fear not! My parade has brought umbrellas!
Yeah I checked all the axle weights and capacities after I bought the T60. A bit average but I can work with them!
Nothing much going on in the tub so the ball weight will be the main factor.
Iâll do a full weighing rundown once we get each point of the caravan and vehicle weighed. đ
@DiceyRicey Goodo. I'm right on the limit with only 2 adults, extra fuel and gear.
@@bonkers5011 I was actually very disappointed to find out how little a lot of these Dual Cab Utes can haul when it comes to axle weights.
When the inspections come Iâm sure a lot of vehicles will be told to unhook their loads and come back with a suitable vehicle.
Might have to cross paths and catchup sometime as you seem to be all over this stuff. Always keen to learn more. đ€
Just a question do you find it? Having a problem when itâs slicks gear in the Auto? You find it vibrates more when you are going from 7 to 8 gear you get a vibration.
Oooh, no I havenât got anything like that. If I put power mode on and max out the throttle controller it gets a driveline wiggle off the line, but nothing in 7th or 8th.. more like 1st and 2nd.
I just find when you are under 2000 RPM revs. It seems to get a vibration before changing gear. Maybe I am too low in the rib limit for it to be a smooth Change.
Are you towing in Normal, Eco or Pwr mode? Could try towing in Power mode to make the response a little more urgent, might help with the low revs.
What caravan did you go with model ?
Hey mate,
We went with the 15â Pop Top 4 Berth from Sunshine Trail.
Itâs got bunks for the kids, a king size for Mrs Dicey Ricey and I, shower, toilet, red arc power management, 240L of water etc. etc.
Weâre pretty happy with it so far and about to head bush so weâll see how she goes fully offgrid! đ
Triton is a lot better tow vehicle.
Ahhh, the good old triton! That was my first 4x4 back in the day. Fond memories.
I did go check out a triton when I was looking to buy, however as Iâm 6â1 and errr⊠pretty overweight, I found the cab space to be a little too small.
The T60 Max has the transmission cooler like the Triton now so that a plus and itâs about $20k cheaper than the latest GLS.
Having a triton as a tow rig and an off-road vehicle though.. phwar! Got to hand it to Mitsubishi, they know how to 4x4!
Thanks for watching and commenting. đ
You get what you pay for, why would you tow with one of these
Hey mate, thanks for the question!
We were looking to buy a 79 but couldnât really justify the price tag!
So to prove the worth of buying these 70k plus utes, we bought the T60 essentially to prove it was rubbish and itâs still worth paying good money for a better ute.
Anyways, that was 18 months ago and the T60 still lives! Started out camping with a tent in the back, then onto the camper trailer, then we thought letâs go to the van! If we get to the stage where we finally do break the T60 weâd likely consider something that has better weight capacities. đ
But yeah, weâre towing with one of these because thatâs the car weâve got and itâs doing it so far. đ€
Toyota are not as good as the fanboys make them out to be! LDV not as bad as you think.
