3 AM, bottom of the 18th, 0-2, 2 Outs, .070 batting average, 0 career HRs
And the whole crowd woke right up. If only someone was on base.
I can't believe that many people were still in the stands at 3am. Concessions must've closed hours before that moment...
@@ericrietschel6854 It was a 4th of July game. They had a fireworks show after the game. That's undoubtedly what many stayed for.
These crazy events always happen around that time of the year, what about the one in Philadelphia a few years later that went until 5am.
@@daveidmarx8296 how about a July 3rd into the 4th kind of game 😆. Best game
@@daveidmarx8296 The folks living around the stadium sure didn't enjoy the fireworks at oh-dark-30.
John Sterling is a legend. He will be sorely missed here in New York.
Only by Yankee fans buddy
@curragh4635 only yankee fans matter in New York buddy 👍🏻
By whom? His erratic calls were cringeworthy. Even Yankee fans despised him.
Fun fact. Camp had 13 hits in his entire career. You just saw his only home run. This was also his last season in MLB. One home run... but nobody will ever forget that one home run.
Waving the outfielders in. Ernie and Sterling laughing at the idea of a home run. Even the set up was magical.
Ray Knights reaction once the ball is hit was priceless!!
Ray knight could go 15 rounds as a boxer, but he couldn't handle an extra two or three innings of baseball. Lol
@@vicepresidentmikepence889 LOL!! I think all the Mets had the same reaction.
Look at Wally Backman's reaction when Camp rounded 2nd base. You could literally lip read what he said to Camp.
Lucky son of a ----- lol!!
Amazing call by John Sterling
He worked for the Braves in those days?? Wow I had no idea
@@jdspreest And the Hawks
@@jdspreest I just found out too! I watched the Braves during the 80s all the time. Went there in 84, 92 and 93. Had no idea the Yankee announcer called Braves games at one time.
Sterling on a Hawks broadcast: “Dominique is magnifique!”
I was a kid in Seattle watching this game on TBS and I watched the whole damn game. I think I would certify it as the Nuttiest Game In The History Of Baseball.
Were you watching to begin with because Dwight Gooden was starting for the Mets? He was in the middle of his historic season.
As a kid, I would watch a lot of Braves and Cubs games. WGN and TBS were the only outlet for MLB games cept on the weekends..
So, did MLB certify this as the Absolutely the Nuttiest Game in the History of Baseball?
Legend says they're still certifying it to this day.
It was! I was there!!!
this game shy get more love. I watched it all one day in ESPN classic a while back and normally can't watch the whole game, but this game was the most entertaining non playoff game or penant race I have seen
🤣
We may never know
It wasn't a cheap one either. Camp nailed it! At 3 in the morning!
Dennis Hines way past 3 am, I believe it was around 4:30!
The game ended like around 3:55 am. The fans were promised fireworks after the game. I don’t have to tell you the reaction from citizens who weren’t aware.
I was 13 years old watching this game (grew up a die hard Braves fan)...it was past 3am and I had stayed up watching the game...when Rick FREAKING Camp hit that game typing homer....and I absolutely jumped up and down and started screaming. My father came into my room and asked me why the heck I was still up that late watching tv...and I told him the Braves game was still on and that a pitcher hit a home run to send it to the 19th inning! After the game ended....they showed the fireworks go off at the stadium that was promised to the fans who attended the game like 9 hours earlier (there were several rain delays in that game). I read in The Sporting News a few weeks later that some the fireworks woke up people who were sound asleep!
An ordinance was signed in that no fireworks could go off after midnight thanks to this game. People thought the city was under attack, which it might of been had Rick hit one in the 19th
It was way past 3. I believe it was about 4:30 am.
Alex B 36 This is your morning wake up call.
Memories.
Didn't Rick strike out to end the game?
I am a huge Braves fan and always have been. When this happened in 1989 I was in labor all night long throughout this game and it gave me something to do to forget about the pain.
It happened in 1985.
This was one of the most OMG moments in baseball history. No one ever saw this coming.
I love how the third baseman throw his hands up as the ball is leaving. He's like, "You gotta be kidding me!" When it sounds that good coming off the bat, you know it's gone.
+tleatherland If you look closely the second baseman also says something to Camp as he jogs by. I'd love to know what it was.
+tleatherland It was 3 in the morning too.
Ray Knight
Yup - and Danny Heep in left field looks like he's just seen a car wreck when the ball goes over the fence. And Lenny Dykstra was PISSED as can be.
I can't tell, but judging his head bouncing as he said something, I am going to guess it was these exact words" "You've GOT to be kidding me!"
People forget that Camp's second at bat it was two outs, bases loaded, full count, and score 16-13. Camp went for a high-heater that was easily ball four....and struck out to end the game.
5 best things about this video:
1) the homerun
2) the announcer's call
3) the reaction of the 3rd baseman as it sails over his head
4) the left fielder putting his hands on his head
5) the 2nd baseman giving a congratulatory nod as Camp runs by him
Ray Knight's reaction at 3rd will NEVER not make me laugh ... 😂😂😂
...and Heep in left !! ;D
As a 60 year old sports fan I've been lucky enough to see some amazing stuff. 1980 Miracle on Ice. Ali in a number of epic fights. 1969 Mets. Tom Brady. But for a regular season game nothing touches this one.
Lol, John Sterling BEFORE broadcasting Yankee games.
He wasn't doing stupid nicknames.
Rick Camped It with a Stamp! or some nonsense he would do now.
@@jonahfalcon1970 Rick “Rolled” that one!
I was 20 years old and remember the next day at work listening to all the talk on the radio about Camp's HR. It was a running joke whenever Camp actually got a chance to bat, because as a relief pitcher it rarely happened and he was such a poor hitter. That's what made this so unbelievably crazy.
1:05 - 3rd baseman is like "holy fk man.. i just wanna go to sleep already"
He literally asks God why?
I was 15 years old and at this game...but had to watch this homer from home. My parents had already driven us from Florida this was the final part of our vacay; so after hours and hours we had to leave for home to Athens, Ga. The game lasted so long, even though we left very late, I still was able to catch the end of the game including this homerun on TV. I still have my ticket stub! That was a crazy night, but fun!! (Too bad it ended in a loss for the Braves.)🤷🏾♀️
Wow ... a video of John Sterling calling a home run without any annoying catch phrases. I think that's more impressive than the homer itself.
You're annoying..
True
Keep hating chump change
He saved that basketball.
"Rick Camped it with a Stamp!" or some nonsense.
Legend has it they are still playing the game today……
Thank you, Rick, for reminding us that wildly improbable never means impossible. Rest in peace and bless your heart for a memory that has lasted me a lifetime.
You simply cannot predict these things, Suzyn.
“Oh my goodness gracious!”
I remember it well, although I was watching the Mets' broadcast out of New York. Ralph Kiner left the booth after 12 innings. When he got back to his hotel room, he turned on the TV, and he thought they were showing highlights. Instead, the game was still going.
John Sterling has broadcast many great moments, and many odd moments, for the Yankees since 1989. But this was, indeed, the nuttiest game in the history of baseball... despite the fact that the rather nutty Pascual Perez could have played in it, but didn’t.
On the Mets broadcast, it is Ralph Kiner who was doing the play-by-play when Rick Camp hit this home run in the 18th inning. It's on You Tube.
This game was delayed 90 minutes by rain. Three different Mets players & 1 Braves player each had 10 at bats in this game. Keith Hernandez hit for the cycle. The game took 6 hours 10 minutes to play, and did not end until after 3 am. The game was played on July 4th, 1985, and yes they still had a fireworks show after the game.
I watched this game on t.v. and it ended at 3:50 in the morning. The team geniuses then set off fireworks that lasted till after 4 a.m. The people of Atlanta thought they were being attacked!
Hernandez broke out of a slump in this game. He'd been hitting .256 and ended up at .309 or .311.
I also know there was at least one (if not more than one) player ejected from the game.
Danny Heep came on as a pinch hitter in the 9th and hit for the cycle!
Here in 2019 for the 4th of July. Lots of memories from Fulton County stadium. Dale Murphy for HOF!
Once when Camp was batting, Braves announcer Skip Caray said "Parents, if there are any young children in the room, please beware. This is not going to be pretty."
May have been a worse hitter than Bartolo Colon.
Skip was the best. He was the best thing about those putrid Braves teams in the 80s, which is why it was so nice when they finally got good.
I was 15 when this game happened.
One of the best games ever.
Other than Aaron hitting # 715, this is probably the next most famous HR in Braves history.
I think this is 3rd, 2nd would be Soler in game 6 against the Astros in 21.
@@ethanbenfield2285That's definitely in the running.
Legend has it the game is still going...
I remember watching this game on television. Crazy game. I grew up loving baseball. Wish we could go back to this era of baseball.
One of the greatest moments in Braves' history!
Given the circumstances and that it was a pitcher hitting because the Braves didn't have anybody else and that that pitcher couldn't hit his way out of a paper bag, it has to rank as one of the greatest moments in baseball history.
And Mets, since they won the game!
This never gets old to watch.
My favorite home run ever
I love the waving of the outfield in from Carter.
God bless you, Rick Camp, wherever you are.
Sadly, he has since passed.
I have watched this video dozens of times and it always brings a smile to my face.
I like the guys getting up and leaving at the 0:54 mark. They obviously had no faith in Rick. 🤣
Danny Heep came on as a pinch hitter in the 9th; AND HIT FOR THE CYCLE!!!!
R.I.P. Rick Camp.
Gary Carter waving the outfield in still makes me laugh
Greatest homerun call ever!!
Probably the most memorable Braves game I ever attended. Just awesome. I was 14 years old. Rain delays were pretty hellacious. The stadium doesn't look very full, but when Rick Camp hit that ball and it went over the fence you couldn't hear yourself think. The crowd just roared. The early 90's Braves were history making and just plain awesome, but this game right here was the beginning of the Braves emerging and showing that baseball miracles really can happen.
1985 was the beginning of a half-decade descent into absolutely putrid baseball. All of these guys moved on before 1991.
Yeah yeah but you get what he meant
Epic moment: The catcher waving the outfield "In". LOL
The fact that the narrator anticipated what was going to happen makes the moment something incredible.
Because it was so improbable.
narrator
Did anyone else notice the only camera view of this epic HR was behind the plate? I've never seen another camera view like the first 2 pitches..🤔🤔
What a perfect time to hit his first home run.
And his last.
Remember the next morning my dad had recorded the game and said you have to see this….Heep’s reaction sells it
One interesting footnote - the game ended at 3:55 am and the fireworks started at 4am. People in Atlanta got woken up to explosions, many thought the Russians had attacked.
Always thought the next best thing after Camp's home run was the fact when the game was finally over at 4am, they still played the fireworks after for fireworks night.
Will never forget this July 4 1985 I was 14 Was a Mets and Braves fan. Mets were one year away Braves were 6 !! All the rain delays that night Would have rather heard Skip on that call Danny Heap in LF was like OMG I am sleepy and the strike 2 call was not even close, the home plate ump was so ready to go home Even the Atlanta 3rd base coach, with the casual hand shake was ready to go home
Strike zones seem to widen as each extra inning passes. Darryl Strawberry was tossed by the HP umpire Terry Tata after arguing call strike 3. That was at 3:15 am. I heard another announcer say that Tata said to Strawberry, “It’s 3:15am. That’s a strike.” 🙂
The Dew Crew shirt on the fan cracks me up!
Lesson: No matter how bad a batter may be, you always treat them as if they have the potential to do some damage. You just never know.
Part of what helps make baseball great. 😊
That first MONSTER cut led Carter to serve up the curveball!! What an AB. Notice kiddies how he was just smiling and having fun. SV
2:08 The third baseman's reaction says it all! lol
I keep watching this - and the Bartolo Colon first career homer in San Diego - over and over. I don't know which one is crazier but I love them both!
John Sterling sort of called it( if he hits a home run to tie this game)
Here after NYY Recaps! Retire in peace John Sterling , the voice of The New York Yankees !
I came to re-watch this not only with it being the 36th anniversary of this great home run, but also after watching Max Fried's walkoff single to win the game for the Braves a few minutes ago.
I watched this game thought it would never end.
Me too, and I didn't want it to end.
People forget that Rick Camp made the final out, but it was VERY close: Bases loaded, two outs, full count, bottom of the 19th, and Camp represented the winning run at the plate. But he swung and struck out on a high-heater that would have been ball four, and would have brought the top of the batting order...
And John Sterling with the call! You can't predict baseball eh Suzyn?
Nowthisispodracing "And it's CAMP-TOWN RACES, a home run for Camp!"
Susie Waldman can cover baseball like everyone can, after all, she is a sports reporter, not a baseball Annie!⚾️🙀
Nowthisispodracing As far as I'm concerned, the best part of Sterling's call was the genuine shock. No catchphrases or the rest of the shtick he goes back to today.
His home run says Survey Says! Bang! Home Run!
Best call of his career
John Sterling, the greatest announcer in the workd
Danny Heep in LF and Ray Knight at 3rd base reactions... ;D
Wally Backman's as well as Camp was rounding 2nd base. Lip reading time, lol.
I was at this game. I was 15 years old and my Dad took our family to the game for our 4th of July family celebration. I wasn't easy growing up a Braves (or Falcons) fan, but there are a lot of great memories. We sat through 3 rain delays and my Dad was determined we were gonna see the fireworks....and boy did we. I still have the ticket stub.
I grew up a braves fan. Even the years when they were louzy I loved em!
Priceless!!!
I remember when this happened in 1985 just few years ago Tanks Cubs played 18 innings Sterling was talking about this game on the radio I felt like I was there in person
Frikkin insanity. Will never be a nuttier game than this one
The great John Sterling with the call
I was looking for this for years!
That was one crazy game.
1:04, watch the third baseman's reaction
I remember watching this game as a kid crazy
It's a shame we will never see a pitcher do this again.
The good old days in some ways!
Camp had one career HR
I watched this live on TV. I remember it was the 4th of July. They were going to have fireworks after the game. That's why there are still a lot of fans in the stands after 18 innings.
They DID have the fireworks after the game. At 4 am. A lot of Atlantans thought the Russians were attacking.
The game had a long rain delay in the early innings it was 4th of July. After we lit fireworks off I watched from the 4th inning until the last pitch it ended at 3:55 a.m. Keith Hernandez hit for cycle. I watched the Mets on WOR in NY. I can't stand John Sterling but this is by far his best call ever
He crushed it at 4 in the morning the wackiest wildest game in history
I went to bed and my Dad told me about all of this in the morning - the next day, TBS showed the Mets in their clubhouse before the game watching the replay. ;)
I was -6 years old, what great prenatal memories!
The fan in blue right behind home plate yelling at the Mets dugout. Gotta love it.
I was there, was 5 years old. We stayed the entire game waiting on the fireworks. I really don't remember it, though.
Got to love goggle. I didn’t know anything about this until today when they mentioned it at the Braves game.
When they finally had the fireworks show after the game (at 4 in the morning) many in Atlanta thought they were back in 1938 at Halloween being invaded by Martians! This game has to be considered one of the greatest regular season baseball games of all time; congratulations to those who stayed and witnessed what makes baseball the great game that it is!
It reminds me of the time in a Little League All-Star Game I pitched 18 pitches to a single batter, and the final pitch got hit right over my head and was caught by the center fielder, who was standing two feet in front of the fence, to prevent a home run. I pitched the whole game, and we won it 7-2. I will never forget that one batter who had me nailed, and the umpire who made pitching the game a virtual nightmare. Lucky for me, I concealed my frustration, and the other team did not catch on to how bad the umpire was. He would not call any pitch a strike unless you just drilled it down the middle, a virtual home-run guarantee to any batter who realized what was going on.
Me and my friends stayed till the end.
Gary Carter looking at Rick Camp after he foul the first pitch, was like wth,😊
Now that The legendary John Sterling is retired, people need to watch this video!!
i was a 15 tr. old baseball fanatic when me and my brother watched this"Late night game" It was so fumn being up late watching west coast games.Of course this was an extra, extra inning east coast game. And John sterling "Prophesying' his future with the 'Holy cow' call...
Most fun game I ever attended. By the time the game was over, most of us didn't really care who won. 🎉🎉And we still got to see the amazing fireworks show🎉🎉,although I'm not sure the neighbors appreciated all that noise at 3 AM. Still one of the most exciting games I've seen.
3rd basemen coach was like “FML.”
You see fans standing up and walking up the aisle when got two strikes on him.
I was 13 years old, staying up until 4am watching this game...and woke up my father after I screamed when Camp hit that homer! He thought I was lying when I said that The Braves were still playing (19 innings...plus MUTLIPLE rain delays).
I can't watch it enough..lololo
Everything about this video was perfect, starting from the commentator’s “if he hits a home run” premonition
That was marvelous, he anticipated it !!!
John Sterling retired today. This was one of his greatest calls outside of his work with the Yankees.
Enjoy retirement, man.
CAMP CAN HIT!
