- The famous Turkish song Konyali is very well known throughout Greece. Naturally it was already sung and danced by the Greeks of Anatolia- Karamanlis, Cappadocians Pontians and others. A version with Greek lyrics was first recorded by Roza Eskenazi in the 1930s. the tune was known also throughout Thrace and was danced as either a free style "Koutsos" or as a "Laisios" - a game dance imitating a hunter, rabbit and dog. In Konya itself and in Central Anatolia it is most often danced playing spoons "Kasik Havasi" or as a Kocek/Kiotsetsi

in the early 70s I worked for a Turkish professor n his wife in Maxwell Hill N London after i got to know them both they where amazing n kind people one day when we where at my house he heard me playing "Tin yerimi tin vraka" he just smiles but when he came back from his holidays from Turkey he brought me this record n few others in Turkish he also brought me back some Turkish cheese goat/ewe milk matured in a cave in Turkey one of the best possibly the best cheese i ever had makes me wanting to cry thinking of the man's kindness yet in our history at school we are not told this so so sad, as some of the kindest most helpful people I met where Turks

My grand- parents came to Greece from Turkey and my great - grand father was a proffesional musician , who was playing in the night clubs of Istanbul ! His son , my grand - father taught me a lot about turkish - greek - syrian music ..all was a mixture !! There was nothing bad in this .

Its impossible to figure out the true origins of this song as there are many equivalents througout the Mediteranean and in Cyprus as well as in Persia and the Arabic East. Although this tune is believed to have it's origins from Cappadocia we do not know if it was originally Pontic Greek or Turkish. One thing is sure...everyone enjoys this tune :D

Great job! As I recently wrote in watch?v=2bOnyvu_tgU -- a performance of "Koniali" by Loksandra -- it is my suspicion that the version that mentions "pastourma" is newer. As for Greek versions, let's not forget the Cypriot "vraka":

The same problem: Culture Vs Nationalism. This piece belongs to the so called "modal" eastern tradition, which covers a region from Sarajevo to India, with the Himalayas being its eastern boundaries. One can easily distinguish between Modal music and Western or FarEastern tradition.Can anyone find out to whom ,among Italians, Germans or French, Classical Music belongs? Of course not. It s absurd.Same thing: Eastern music belongs to all nations and was created collectively by all of them.

Konyali, seems it s a native tune and a very old one. In this video, you can find it played and sung in many styles. Perhaps it s a tune older than the presence of the Turkish or even Greeks
(I mean GR and TUR speakers) in the region, perhaps even older than the formation of the various local ethnic entities, i.e. many thousand of years old.

Just 150 years ago there were no Greeks and Turks, Hellinas meant for Greeks pagan (who prefered to be called Rums or Romioi) and Turk meant for muslim Ottomans a "servant". We were all Ottomans other were Rum Orthodox other muslim, other jews other Armenians, until nationalism came from the West and separated us to be more easily controlled by them... We are the same people (let's say the same nation), just with different religion, that's all!

It's tough! There were no tape recorders back then, and people had no motive to write down the lyrics :-) No one can rule out the possibility that a Cypriot -- Greek speaking, whether Christian (Greek) or Muslim (Turkish) -- moved to Konya around, say, 1800, carrying the "vraka" tune with him and spreading it in the region (eventually dressed in Turkish lyrics).
Note: I only realized the proximity between "vraka" and "Konyali" when I let a Cypriot friend listen to the latter :-))
Turks didn't arrive in Konya in 1800 as you have estimate. The Selchuk Turks conquered central Anatolia in 1093 and made Konia the Capital city of their Empire. The history of this song goes back to 100 years only. Thus it is a typical and genuine Turkish folk song. By the way an ethnicity can not be identified by a certain religion. Note that İslam is some 550 years younger than Christianity. Before a vast Percentage of Turks had converted to Islam, several major clans and tribes had been Christianed by Byzantine. It is definitely proved and duly confirmed by All Western and Eastern historians that, fighting one another for power, several Turkic groups started to cross the Urals, and move West, south West as from 400 AD. Initial arrivers were the Altaic Huns, settled in Hungaria, mixed with later coming Uralik Magyars, during late 8th century, and Christianized by sword massacres of Sharlman (Sharlkent, et.). The second wave started in 680ies, continued roughly till 900 AD. Among them were the Bolkars, Pecheneks, Kumans, Kipchaks, Huns, Ucoghurs, Onughurs, Otuzoghurs, Gokoghuz, All have been Christianized by Byzantine with intertervals of time, between 700 a d 850 AD. Except the Gokoghuz and some Kipchaks, All were assimilated either by Slav or Byazatine administion. Gokoghuz are the Christian Gagauz Turks in Moldavia. Kipchaks were given land and settled in central Anatolia. These are the Karamanlı Turks. Greeks call them Karamanlis. Following exchange of ethnic population, Turkish government deported them to Greece though this was a big mistake. Initially this Turkish speaking Christian People were rejected by local Greeks, But later in time they were assimilated. There are many Christian and even Jewish Turkish clans in Western central Asia.

Αυτό το τραγούδι είναι ελληνικό. Απλά άρεσε στους Τούρκους και το πήρανε και το προσαρμόσανε. Το έχουνε κάνει και με πολλά άλλα τραγούδια, χορούς και ελληνικές συνήθειες. Το πρόβλημα είναι πως οι ίδιοι πιστεύουν πως τα έχουν δημιουργήσει οι ίδιοι, διότι κατευθύνονται από τα καθεστώτα τους,τα οποία έχουν πάρει χαμπάρι τα χαμηλά διανοητικά τους επίπεδα.
