the explain the end, Dredd guessed the heartbeat detonator wouldnt be able to transmit thru 200 floors of concrete and over 1km in distance from the top floor to the ground dropping MaMa down.
Very few actors would do a movie that has 80% of their face covered .

The guy is an incredibly good actor and I will watch anything he is in. He always crushes.
You know at this point I don't even want a sequel anymore it deserves its own full series the actress that played Judge Anderson was amazing as well has anyone tried to crowd fund this I'm sire the main actors meaning the people responsible would be onboard and I've seen dumber stuff get ridiculous amounts didn't one guy want a sandwich even if the goal is never met at least as a publicity it might show we demand more Dredd with Urban and co

Very underrated film. Tanked at the box office yet basically anyone who has seen it, loves it.
My dad grew up collecting Judge Dredd comics (2000AD) through the 70's and 80's and passed them onto to me as a child. I hope more people take the time to check them out, they're absolutely amazing and a big part of British comic book history. While this film has a different tone, it's a great adaptation
In the 70s and (mostly) the 80s British writers took over the comic scene - at least if you care about amazing story telling in what came to be known as the "British Invasion".
Alan Moore - Batman (esp "Killing Joke"), Superman, Swamp Thing, Watchmen, V for Vendetta, League of Extraordinary Gentleman and more.
Neil Gaiman - Black Orchid, Sandman, many more.
Jamie Delano - Hellblazer (John Constantine), Captain Britain, Animal Man, many more.
Plenty of other writers who raised not just the level of story telling, but transformed the prose in which comics were written.
I grew up in the 70's and 80's for some reason the art work in those comics captivated me the people who were involved in producing them were well ahead of everyone else.
Karl Urban killed it as DREDD.
There were talks of a Sequel as well as a spinoff TV series, Judge Dredd Mega City One, based on the movie, but these would be shelved as the film was not a financial success, making $45 million dollars against a $50 million dollar budget, and it was also due to bad marketing.
The rights keep moving around between companies.
Thats the annoying thing noone knew it was made.
You can blame them marketing it as a 3D film. During that time every 3D movie made was horrible and no one liked 3D. So people equated 3D to being bad.
This movie was a banger, the Judge Dredd movie with Stallone is goofy but I love it do to nostalgia, but this movie is just so damn good.
This movie beats every Dread hands down.
@@frankgunner8967 Undeniably so, but Stallone saying "I am the law" and "I knew you'd say that" is always hilarious.
This is one of those movies i could watch again and again and again. I always watch the reactions of the first timers.
It's crime this movie didn't get a sequel yet.
I've always stated this movie is the golden standard of gun detail... All their techniques are perfect (like how they're not turtling out, staying off the walls while moving at combat glide, they're not muzzling each other with their guns at any point, etc). And all the tactics they use make complete sense for the situation. Which tracks, given how they trained with ex-SAS operatives and South African police to get it down for the film.

Most of the British public prefered dealing with black American soldiers because almost none of them were arrogant arseholes. When the the US army tried to enforce segregation in the town of Bammber Bridge they responded by putting up signs barring white GI's from the pubs.
Dredd gives the perfect summary for the movie: "Drug bust. Perps were... uncooperative."
To us, this a high stakes mission to kill a drug lord/gang leader. For Dredd, this was just tuesday.
This movie is so much better than the original, and Karl Urban is the best Dredd, I’d love to see him play this role again. Unfortunately I doubt that will happen, but at least we got this one, it’s bad ass.

@@parkplaceninja But you can’t call it a remake. That’s a specific thing, and many movies are similar to eachother. It’s a Judge Dredd movie, had nothing to do with The Raid. So, is Indiana Jones and The Mummy the same thing? No, there are millions of movies out there, and some are going to be very similar. You’re way off on this one dude.
Always loved Judge Anderson, the Psi Judge. She had her own spin-off comic book.
Dredd guessed that the dead-man's signal to the bombs couldn't travel hundreds of floors up, but hit her up with the Slo-Mo to be sure.
This movie is a masterpiece.

This is actually one of my favorite movies. Very smartly written, with hundreds of inside jokes and references to geek culture (comics, sci-fi, games, etc). And Molotov Girl is smoking.

Fun fact:
Judge Dredd was originally meant to be a parody of/warning against militarizing the police, but people found the character so likable and badass, that he got a full comic run, and had the lore of the world fleshed out, and became one of the most successful indie comic book characters ever.

Pete Travis did such a great job directing this, he's an underrated talent. Check out another movie he did, a thriller called Vantage Point, it's really good.

A great reaction. This was a rad movie, had me invested from beginning to end. A friend pointed out that this movie kinda mirrors The Raid, another one worth checking out.
In regards to Mama’s wrist bomb, Dredd said “Let’s see if the signal can reach up 200 floors”, and he guessed correctly, the ground was out of range of the explosives, so Mama’s death couldn’t trigger them.
TO DEVIN: For Halloween, if dressing up is your style, In the Comics they have "Judge Giant"... and he's on Dredd's side!
Stallone did a cheesy version of Judge Dredd in 1995.
The bomb at the end, basically he knew she’d still be alive by the time the sensor got far enough away. So it lost connection just before it was due to explode. I genuinely think it was rigged to blow
Its one of the greatest sins this movie never got a sequel though I haven't given up hope Karl Urban is perfect as Dredd and Constantine is getting a continuation after years so crazier things have happened also really enjoyed the female Judge forget her name wanna say Anderson

If they did it as crazy as the comics people wouldn't get it, but Urban nailed Dredd.
The detonator didn't go off because the signal would have had to make it through 200 stories of thick concrete and metal.
I wish I watched this movie at the theaters, but I would have had drove 1 hour to go see it cause where I lived at the time. So i waited to rent it. Man I loved this movie. Sadly not enough people watched this during the theater run.
@Devin You are thinking of the Judge Dread from 1995 with Stallone and Rob Schnider. That one is for sure worth a watch as well.
The explosive didnt go off because she was 100 floors away.... so the signal got sent, but it can't reach that far
I think my favorite part of the 2,000AD comics was how they would show no pulling of punches. As the comics developed, they showed exactly how bad the mega city could get, and how Dredd was ready to do whatever was necessary to bring the law to the lawless.
Also! Anderson is cleared to be a judge anyway in the comics, because the justice department knew that she could have the potential to cause serious trouble if she ever joined the wrong side of the law.
Mega city 1 is the east cost of the United States, Mega city 2 is the west coast. Mega city 3 is texas city. Everywhere else of the old United States is basically cursed earth. Nothing really lives out there, and what does is NOT great.
Karl Urban surely put a lot into that role, considering how for entire movie we only saw lower part of his face.

Details, just like we see the ID scan for the gun at the beginning, we also see that Anderson without wearing a helmet herself could look into Dread´s mind, while he wore one. The movie does a great job here.

Sylvester Stallone was in the first Dredd movie. This is a remake and even though I enjoyed the first this was way better.
Before Dredd tosses her out the window he asks if the heart rate monitor bomb detonator can go thru 200 stories of con steel and concreate ...."Lets find out" he says. She dies and its to far away to trigger the explosives on the ground floor lol
One of the few instances of the remake of a 80s/90s cult classic ended up WAY better than the original.

Yeah bro! We’re still waiting for a second one also. There was a 90’s film with Sylvester Stallone in it also, it was kinda campy but this one is way cooler.

I was fan of the Stallone one, it was guilty pleasure, so i went to see this in the theater because i am huge fan of the comics and Karl Urban fan. The man is awesome actor. This movie blew me away. It just captures the feel of the comics and Dread is just a bad ass. You get feeling that this normal day for Dread. It deserves a sequel just want to see more of this world and what in it

this movie was fuckin great...the original judge dredd with stallone was trash super cheesy and 90s that was when him and Arnold were doin action/comedy stuff like Twins, True Lies, Last Action Hero, Tango And Cash (great buddy cop movie), Demolition Man etc.
Criminally undersold movie this one, i always felt that it suffered because of the awful Stallone movie. Deserves a sequel or a TV series.

Stallone was in the first version of judge dredd and it sucked hard lol. Do not waste your time on it. This movie is one of my favs and deserved a sequel. Before he threw her out he theorized there was too much distance and concrete between her transmitter and the receiver for the bomb to go off.

I hate reboots but this one was top notch. Its a crime that there was no sequel to this movie. Devin G would love to see you react to The Tournament (2009). I asked you over on the other reaction channel a few months ago.
Sylvester Stallone was in the original one. It's terrible. Also the reason the bomb didn't blow up was because Ma-Ma was out of range of the signal by the time she got to the bottom floor (since Peach Tree has so many floors).

Another really good movie with a similar premise, some officers get trapped in a big apartment building that’s controlled by a criminal, and they have to fight for their lives to escape, is called ‘The Raid: Redemption’. You should definitely check it out if you haven’t seen it yet.

Hey Devin, big time fan here. I think I can shed some light on two questions you had though I'm betting someone has already answered them.
1. Dredd was basically taking a gamble that the signal on that deadmans switch MaMa had on her wrist wouldn't reach up a two mile building and through that much concrete. He was correct.
2. You'd be forgiven for thinking that Sylvester Stallone was in it. He was in the original Judge Dredd film. (Don't bother watching, it was shit.)

I do really love the culture and the world that the movie sells to us and the narrative through-lines; it *does* actually parallel our world and the way people react rather nicely! When nobody can afford to solve any of their problems, then everyone just... looks for an escape for a few hours or a few minutes. Drugs give that escape, or else larking about (Like the skaters and such that are shown) in 'non-productive' ways with people. There's always the choice of doing anything to make ends meet out of desperation - like the homeless guy underneath the blaster door in the beginning, or any one of the criminals committing the 17000 crimes per minute - but if you're damned if you do and damned if you don't or morally disagree with trampling over other people, then for a lot of people, the choice becomes, "Well... I can never escape. But I can feel good for a short while. I'd rather chase that since it's and opportunity I can control and I can get, rather than trying to accomplish something that's out of my hands and that I'll never be able to manage or sustain."
It's a version of reality that might be exaggerated - but all that's exaggerated is *the population numbers*. It is potentially a very real situation that we could all find ourselves living through in our lifetimes, if we don't all have a serious discussion about how to handle it, and I love that!
After some time of this movie becoming a cult classic, it is officially getting a sequel with karl Urban returning to play Dredd!! Cannot wait!
