My father showed me this song. The amazing person that he was made it possible to live a great life, and in his journey he met Billy Joel, became his friend. You see, he was a tourist guide in Cuba, and happened to be the one to show Billy the beauty of my country, he recreated the scenery of this video in a club in Havana, and I'm pretty sure he made Billy and his friends very happy, as he always did.He told me the story of how before leaving Cuba, Billy asked him to put up posters of his album all over Havana I lost him yesterday, and now, along with all the pain, I'm feeling grateful to have been able to call him dad, and happy that he got to experience all of this
Wow, thank you for that heartfelt story. I believe Billy Joel's family had a connection to Cuba because some of his father's family arrived in Cuba when they were escaping the Nazis in Germany. He must have appreciated the help your dad offered him. Cubans are truly citizens of the world!!😎🗽⚾🌴🇨🇺
I like this version over the remake he made in the 80's Mainly because he is younger in this, which really fits the song, a young piano player who witnesses the misery og everyone around him in the bar, while also dealing with his lack of success.
Well, he's got a success, yes. Still I believe, he's got his share of sadness and loneliness in his life. So he may sing this song better now than when he was young.
This is a better version than the 80s one, it captures the sadness of the lyrics of the song. They way it’s sung and everyone in the bar just makes it more powerful

Sometimes, lyrics are a mess that is barely cohesive, almost as if their purpose is only to add a singing voice to the song rather than have meaning... (American Pie...)
Me too. I still remember the moment as a teenager when I suddenly discovered that a lot of my favourite songs (piano man, uptown girl, leningrad, we didn't start the fire, for the longest time, she is always a woman to me, ...) are actually all from Billy Joel. He is so versatile and awesome.
@@rickrolledtruth5834 he always said memory in the song. This is the original as it was when first released. Maybe a few times at gigs Bill has slipped in his words and sang 'melody' but 'memory' is the correct lyric
I was a singer in a rock band from 1999/2004. The air was thick with cigarette smoke and everyone was high on alchohol. I used to get revved up with a couple of Vodka doubles before I sang. (Bad, bad stuff!). People used to buy me drinks; left, right and centre. Billy really nails it when he says; "Well they all share a drink they call lonliness, but it's better than drinking alone". And he is absolutely right! It is only now that I realise how sad and lonely pub culture really is; These people are not your friends, and they don't love you as they say they do. That's the booze talking. Being a rock star is not so glamourous when you can hardly walk home! Today, pubs are full of people 'scrolling'! It's even worse than before. You can't have a conversation with them! I stay out of pubs nowadays. This video is better than the remake, however it is out of tune! I can't play my harmonca to it. I play along with the remake okay. It is 'pitch-perfect'. Never mind. The song is a gem!
Saw him in concert. He left the stage, suddenly the spotlight went on and he walked back on. He sat down at his piano. He said, I may be crazy but I'm not stupid. Then he started singing piano man. Freakin amazing!!!
And here is this lad in the corner I'm not really sure why he's here All alone, with his smart phone His date didn't show up, I fear ...harmonica... I shout "I am taking some requests You can yell them or fill out the form." With teary eyes, he gives a smile "Please, play Darude's Sandstorm!"
I was born in 1972...I grew up on the song. I saw Billy perform it live for his 3rd encore at a concert in LA in 1989, and I cheered (after 2 encores, we thought it might not come out, but it did). 23 years later, as I'm approaching 40, I "get it" even more. Timeless. I suspect I will "get it" even more 20 years from now. Bravo Billy for this song!
At my nephew's wedding reception, the D J played this and the entire hall sang the entire song from start to finish, about 200 people. A memory I'll never forget. GREAT TUNE.
My eighth grade English teacher would play the classic rock station in class when we were doing silent work, and whenever the song would come on, all the guys in the class would sing along. My best friend would always lead the guys, and whenever I hear the song now, it reminds me of him, and several other guys fight back tears whenever we here it. RIP Greg, I know you are in a better place.
Best clip for Billy to sing this classic. A young, talented, but a struggling musician played in a neighborhood bar with all the lonely people. The song was rendered with such force and emotion. He was shouting to the world that he would make to big time someday. Perfect.
I also think the overall quality of music degraded within the last 20 years significantly. It it the way music is produced: Singers are in most cases not the songwriters anymore and, besides that, lack talent to actually "sing". They are judged by looks rather than their ability to sing and perform with an instrument. Due to modern technology bad talent can be compensated. But if you are used to music of the past generations you easily hear the difference.

Since a kid...Always love this song.
Love this song
Esta canción es una belleza. Sobre todo la letra, que me moviliza mucho. Me parece tristemente deliciosa cuando dice "...they share a drink called "Lonelyness", but it´s better than drinking alone...".
Interesante el video, ya que Billy Joel está realmente cantando, sin hacer Play back.
"moviliza" = "conmueve" en español de toda la vida.
Wow!!! Some excellent Rock and/or Roll happening with that group!! Thanks.
Classic!! Billy Joel made this song with substance!!! This is song will always resonate with me because of the culture and upbringing I had.

Billy Joel writes music that is amazing for him and him alone. I like to listen to this every time we leave new Orleans.... It always makes me want to return. :)
I like this song. Billy is a genius.
I would download the second video of Piano Man. He really combines keys with harmonica.

One of my all time favorite songs. Thanks for the good music education mom.

Geiles Lied tolle Stimme super Sänger
I've been listening to Billy Joel since the mid-seventies. Finally got to see him at Hyde Park this year, and it was wonderful, much better than I expected. I've never seen this version of Piano Man before....
One of the greatest songs to tell a story... of all time! I'll never get tired of hearing it. Its sadness always moves me.

You're wrong Valkor73, I'm 25 and just today working at a summer camp I joined in with 2 14 year old boys that were singing Piano Man. The Classics never die and this is a classic.
