- I started this video last year, but the winter season came in a bit quick, so the canoe outriggers were put on the back burner. I have now finished making them. I designed it to be inexpensive to make and completely removable. It slides on over the yoke and is held on there by it's design with out damaging or drilling any part of the canoe. I tried to be very clear on my instructions though I kept forgetting words for some odd reason....stress, aging, no coffee, miss my Snickers Bar etc. all contribute to my memory loss I guess, I think, not sure,...I forgot. Any way, enjoy the video and I hope this gives others a great idea on how to stabilize their canoe so it is a bit more enjoyable.

That’s the exact setup I’ve been working on my 16’6” Coleman RAM-X except I like your setup sliding over your yoke better than what I planned. I’m too old & broken to heft my canoe anymore so I built a trailer for mine.

Nice build! I have a Coleman canoe that has a 1 1/2”-2” round aluminum tube that’s my center “yoke” so I couldn’t make one like yours. I had to drill holes in the center tubing and lay my smaller outrigger tubing on top of the canoe center “yoke” pipe and line up the holes and drill them out. I don’t have the flag pole holders on mine, I bent the outrigger tubing and mine is bolted through with large washers bent to match the pipe. I use wingnuts on the 4 through screws and it works great.
I didn’t use the crab pot bouys, but instead used a “jumbo” pool noodle one each outrigger. Same concept. Been using mine for 3 years now and works great. It lets me stand up while fly fishing.

If You make the PVC longer instead of foam, You could just caped with pvc end cap.

Naw , I went to a second hand store and bought some cheap crutches and bought some large boat bumpers . That's the way to go !

I have not been able to canoe, it just keeps raining and raining and raining everytime I have a free moment. I am hoping soon. Today and tomorrow....rain.
It's cheaper to buy two pvc stormwater pipes with caps on the ends for the float part.
True, But... not really aquadynamic moving thru the water.
Will that pvc plastic portion of the built consider the weak point that will break first ? I would use Aluminum throughout with reinforcements gussets and extra pipe for strength, security and stability to replace the pvc ? Weight difference will not be that much … ill use your design and weld aluminum pipe for my outriggers but awesome idea
I weigh 300lbs and it has not broken yet. So, maybe after a lot of usage possibly....but not currently. Thank you for watching and commenting!

I used my local True Value hardware store. I have not seen it in Lowes or Home Depot.
Are you worried about the cast metal flagpole holders cracking and failing? They seem heavy for the job.

Sir, im a kiwi in NZ. When i worked in vineyards with the boys from the islands of Vanuatu, they consider their outrigger to be an essential lifesaving device. It is a reserve paddle, or, a floatation device in case of sinking. They carve them out of wood. Just thought you might like that perspective.
Thank you! We have boat races/clubs on the river near me that hold 8-10 paddles with one huge outrigger that prevents the boat from tipping. I forgot the name of this type of boat but once to twice a year they have races. Great to watch.

They are KUFA Sports 6x14-Inch. I bought them off of Amazon for $34 bucks.

If you had extended those arms completely out the ends of the buoys, you could of glued end caps on the pvc.
I did not want the PVC pipe to stick out. I just wanted it to go in far enough to secure it tightly.
Hey Big Guy any updates ? I have assembled most of the materials to build . I had already constructed a set and broke a flag pole holder this summer . Since then i bought the stainless pole holders , hopefully more robust !
I never got out this season. Canoe sat in storage along with my power boat. Nothing but rain, rain, rain most of the weekend. Third rainiest year in history...and still raining and it's Jan 1st! SHould be snowmobiling.

Do you remember the wall thickness of the aluminum pipe ?
0.06 Inches. I used Aluminum piping vs aluminum tubing. Pipe is thicker than Tube.
You could of also wrapped some duct tape around the loose pvc one to make the fit tighter.
Good idea, but duct tape in water has a super short life span.
I liked the video but was kicked in the nuts when I realized I've watched it for an hour and had no demonstration of how it stabilized the canoe on the water.
LOL, I am not near any water nor pond. It a process to haul the canoe which involves installing roof racks, tie downs, etc. SO I have to assume most will understand it works with out a physical demonstration. Maybe I'll do a "Shorts" video of me using it.

Sorry, I never got the canoe in the water this year. It rained almost every weekend during the Summer and I was too busy during the week building and repairing side work. My small power boat was never opened this year. Shrink wrap stayed on and registrstion stayed in my drawer....

Have had zero time this season. Building a deck for someone, rebuilding a Cupola, then I have to work on another boat. Its been crazy busy.

Zero issues. It keeps me and my son much more stable while fishing. That's 480 lbs in the canoe....and the weight is not evenly distributed front to back if you know what I mean.... :-)
It is beautiful but too difficult for me to make. I am a 63 year old woman and don't own many tools. I will have to keep looking for something simpler to make. But I enjoyed your video.
I have never looked, but I would not be surprised if someone makes a kit of pre-cut wood to replace rotten gunnels. Worth a internet search!!
interesting build...but could have been a 15 minute video, nearly an hour was waaay too long
You cannot really show much of a DIY build in 15 minutes. Details takes time to show so all bases are covered.
On the contrary, most videos are too quick. I appreciate the detail and I was able to fast forward when I was ready to get to next part of build. With youtube, it allows viewers to be more active viewers.
