Scotty let me have one of your cars.
I didn’t listen to Scotty and had my transmission flushed on my Scion Xb with 190 thousand miles. I now have that hit from behind symptom in my transmission. ALWAYS LISTEN TO SCOTTY! He knows what he’s talking about
What Toyota model is that car in the video?
@@rocketrodlover I do to wat did you find out it was a solenoid or wat ?
What about manual cars scotty?
If Scotty tells you to pray once, just know it can get reeeaaaaalllll bad for you lol
😭
...and by the time you DO pray it is already too late..
Suddenly I believe in God just because my transmission is acting wacky

Cvt transmissions need the most maintenance.
As a wise man once said:
"You better pray or you're out 10K"

@@justthisguy1948 yeah and it’ll cost another 500$ to replace a transmission

No way. Maybe for a Porsche. But if you are driving a Porsche, you don't need to be watching diy shade tree mechanic videos.
Scotty, I prayed 😆
It’s not low on fluid 😵💫

Lmao rip
If you're lucky enough to have a transmission with a dipstick. JMO.
Ugh one doesn’t have one
rip my highlander hybrid I should have watched scotty’s video first
Im the only dip stick for buying it.
Don't buy a Pontiac torrent
Yeah my 05 jetta didn't have one sadly.
I just fixed a cheap $10 transmission cooler line connector leak that would have probably costed me the transmission had I left it alone.
Check your transmission fluid!
If only the auto maters didn't remove the flippin' dipsticks...
@@The_Noticer. Ikr?!?
I did too on my daughter's mustang. The quick connect on one of the lines to the cooler developed a hairline crack. She lost a gallon of fluid over probably several days. Thank goodness I saw drips on the driveway. I cut out the quick connect and spliced in some hose. No more leak.
Noticing the first signs that the transmission isn't working properly or better yet noticing fluid on the ground is important. By the time it gets as bad as he described I think it's too late
It would be nice to still have transmission fluid dipsticks. The last time I saw one was on my 2005 Hyundai Sonata.
My car very suddenly went from working perfectly to every single shift being really hard, but only once the engine warmed up. Ended up being the Transmission Control Solenoid. Had it replaced and went ahead and got a fluid and filter change while I was at it. It's been perfect ever since.
If it's a Nissan it was going out before you bought it.

I need to check my transmission fluid… I’ll be sure to pray beforehand though 😉
Mine was low… I live another day 🙏
I love it when Scotty tells us to pray😆😆the most we can do👍
I used to get a kick at stops. Then I switched out the transmission lines. I also greased the splines. It got rid of the problem.
Never stop giving us those great tips Scotty. More power to you, stay healthy and keep posting.
Also, first get your transmission control module (tcm) checked first. First mechanic I took the car to said I needed a new transmission. Took it to a trusted friend and he checked the TCM. It was bad. $300 later, car was good as new.
Mr. Scotty Kilmer ... saving tushies since 2007 like a true superhero.
But Scotty, my car has lifetime transmission fluid! 😂
Yeah my car supposedly did too! Found out that was a bold faced lie.
Good for the lifetime of the transmission...whenever that is.
@@Bruce12867 exactly! Like admitting the car has a short lifespan.
Lifetime as in the lifetime of the car. They didn't put a number on the lifetime of the car lol. It's lifetime could be anywhere from 50k to 200k. It dies when it dies
My 98 Accord was slamming in and out of od at high speed and slamming in low speed too
Also, was slipping at take off so bad I had to manually shift into 1-4.
I thought the trans was gone.
All I did was pump out all the trans fluid from the fill hole on top of the trans (about 3qts it was overfull too) and added about 2.5 quarts of new trans fluid. Works like new!!!
The fluid l pumped out was black and thin like water.
Probably never had a service in 225k miles!
Scotty, you're great man! Not only for the explanations but also for your inspiring energy and optimism that you have while doing these explanations.
Hey Scotty them shift solenoids and pressure switches can make a hell of a difference
Hey I think one of those went out on my car. It worked up until the trans fluid was bad and we changed it and now it won't engage a gear? What is going on? It gave a code throw the other day before this happened saying it was a clutch solenoid
Had a 2001 for windstar. Transmission was acting a little weird for about a week. Then I stopped at a stop sign, hit the gas, the engine revved up to about 4.5k and then I felt a hard jerk forward and heard a bang. Looked under the car and all I saw was pieces of metal and fluid leaking. Good times
My 2001 Windstar transmission died at 65k!
@@kaydallas2569 hahaha I think mine was around 67k
My next door neighbors had a mid 90s Windstar that also ate its transmission at not-that-many miles.
Seems like Ford slept a little on the trans for that van.
Always try a fluid change and filter first. A clogged filter can cause these same behaviors.
Not always, a fluid change can kill the transmission, especially if the owner has ignored the fluid change schedules for a long time.
@@kman-mi7su a fluid flush you mean.
@@kman-mi7su yup
@@juancamberosg.593 Both a fluxh and a change.
@@kman-mi7su how can it kill the transmission? Isn’t it just putting new fluid in what could be so bad about that? I’m gonna need to change the fluid/filter or do a flush on my Lexus soon so I’d really like to know bro. I was flooring it for like 10 miles straight when I was driving back from Joshua Tree and a warning light came on saying that the transmission fluid was overheating, so I pulled over and let it cool down. I’m taking that as a sign to change it though.
So much info in 50 seconds. We should all be as professional as you are Scotty.
I mean no hostility, but you do realize that each of these things he mentioned is pretty obvious. These are things that you wouldn't need a video to tell ya.
Once again, the in the nicest way, and have a good day.
THERE ARE TWO OTHER THINGS IT COULD BE: Your Transmission control module could be going bad. Sometimes this is separate from the Transmission itself and can be replaced without replacing the entire transmission.
ALSO. It could just be a grounding issue. Check to make sure that the ground connector from your battery to your chassis is secure. If there is a lose ground connection usually the Transmission is the first thing to show symptoms (in my experience)
Thanks. I’ve had issues with the ground cables acting faulty in the past so I know where to look.

That slip turned into a £3000 repair bill on our family van
That’s cheap for a transmission.
@Jaycomma I could get a used one put in a 3 series BMW for less than a third of that but bmw zf one's don't go bad so no need. Ford automatic, though haha
I find the feeling of a transmission going out where it slows down really hard and the vehicle dives forward is sometimes a misfiring cylinder. I had that problem in an F-150 I had and thought the automatic transmission was going out, nope just the garbage Triton engine misfiring and no shop wanted to touch the spark plugs. I replaced that with a 2001 Tacoma with a manual and I thought the transmission needed to some TLC or was just that tough because I would let off the gas in any gear and the vehicle would slow down suddenly and dive one day. It ended up throwing a code that sent me on a hunt for vacuum leaks which I fixed, then replaced the PCV valve in the end. Runs like new.
Did your motor do a kind of like inhale then let in out
Thanks for this information!
Scotty miss so much. God bless the family they go to the loss of Scotty, my friend on CZcams. Also, I listen to his instruction about different things with Cars and he gave me so much clarity the way he told us how to do different things to our car and want to be aware of. God bless family.
This guy is such a legend he just explained the problem probably need to replace the transmission fluid.
Or... It could be the throttle position sensor. I had quotes from transmission guys for $2000. Another mechanic said "hit sensor with screw driver handle". Fixed!
Legend!!
This will make your transmission last almost indefinitely just let off the gas like a standard transmission... As fast as you can let off the gas and put your foot back on the gas again... This prevents the clutches to slip... When it's going into the next geartry to get into the habit of this of any car you own no more transmission problems more than likely
My car slips and this is what I've been doing haha
@@joshc7765 Me too. It does it around 50 miles an hour. And then I have to ease into my speed and keep letting off the gas and back on the gas until I get up to 65. But if I have to slow down then I have to do it all over again. The people behind me on the freeway get mad when I'm doing 50. BTW, I'm a medical courier and drive my car for my job.
Firestone told me I should buy a new car. I said I can't I still owe another 4 years of payments
Literally 99/100 of the time the fluid is fine, and your bank account is gonna be emptied
Heard somewhere it can be as simple as the solenoid of transmission only, but generally if your car does that, you can only pray
I bought my first car when I was 18 I neglected it's health and the transmission went bad. I'm 27 and I haven't owned a car since. I got a buss pass and a bicycle now. Hope this video reaches young adults with cars.

The transmission of my 06 Fx 35 was slipping because my Mechanic put a CVT fluid in it, since I changed the fluid (dextron III) the slipping have stopped but it's changes gear slowly and jerks a times. We have bad mechanics here in Nigeira
You need to do another fluid change. There's probably still a lot of cvt fluid in there. Unless they deliberately open the drain plugs on the torque converter, about 1/3 to 1/2 of the oil stays in the transmission during fluid changes.
Love these shorts Scotty, keep up the good work!
Hhhh
Several Ford models had torque converter and pump shaft issues. Transmissions were find just no pressure due to failure in torque converter and shaft
Ford Taurus from the mid 90s til 2004 are notorious for transmission issues.
#1 could also be a sign of a bad transmission mount. Usually it will give the same behavior as a hard shift. Had a car that did that, sold it to a friend on the assumption the transmission was bad... it wasn't. Just needed a new mount (which was maybe $100 in parts).
Not sure I'd want to be your friend then...
@@GIJoe-wu6bolmao 😂😂
@@GIJoe-wu6bo Lol that's a cold blooded friend
I had personal auto transmission issues problems w Chrysler,BMW and most 1990s Chevy cars
Hard upshifts and downshifts can also be just a faulty TCM, which solved the issue in mine once I had it refurbished for way cheaper than a new one.
Lucas transmission fix is helping to extend my 02 MPV tranny. Only 118k miles when I needed to use Lucas like Scotty recommended
how much longer?
any update? how much further did it get you?
I really like your automotive advice. Thank you! 🙋🏼
Such good advice thanks Scotty
Car sounds and all, our mechanic and savior. Wish you well man
Thank you for staying on scotty i needed this talk.
What about when I’m stopped on a hill and I’m in drive but the vehicle slowly rolls backward?
I had an old automatic Toyota back in high school in the 90’s and all of a sudden it wouldn’t shift into gear from park. I checked the transmission fluid (while on) and the dipstick wasn’t even picking up the fluid. Then I added transmission fluid and then life was good again, worked fine.
Can also be as simple as a transmission filter clogged with material, simple clean and removal of materials and a fresh filter with fluid can fix it right up
Manual transmission means way less headache.
This literally just happened to me the other day, I wish I found this video sooner
Straight to the point. Thank you ! 😭
I have a 2010 GMC Terrain , and my car would slip so I pulled over shut off and restarted it. It did this once a week for about a month, until finally I was driving and it slipped out of gear and had to go to repair shop. Turns out it needed a new valve body inside the transmission $825 now it drives and shifts excellent
What if the ECU is learning the difference between her and your driving in sport mode!
Haha 😄
What about a diesel cold start, my transmission doesnt shift as nice until warm.
Could be a dirty filter. When the fluid is cold it doesn't pass through but as it warms up enough can get through the dirty filter that it will work. I had an old 76 Ford Elite that was the same way for a couple of years. Eventually I replaced it with an 81 Thunderbird 🙂
2001 Honda Odyssey owner here…I pray daily. Mechanic shop says the fluid is okay. Still praying daily. 30,000 miles on a rebuilt transmission. I need a second car 😮
Thanks uncle Scotty 👍🏽
Pray and I do mean pray. God Bless Scotty Kilmer.

This man is a gift to me am from Zambia. I have learnt so much from you Scotty 🙇.
“Is this a problem with my transmission, or do I just own a Jeep?”
I have an 01 jeep GC laredo and she shifts hard when gearing up and also shifting back down into first so jeeps just do that
Transmission in my car has shifted hard for 10 yrs. It is in the tune.
Can you explain what a transmission tune is? Someone else mentioned this concerning the shudder in the 5th and 6th generation Camaros. After flushing and changing the torque converter their car still had the problem. They found out it was in the tune. But I've only seen one video addressing it. Is that just like a regular tune up? Sorry can't find much info on it and I'm not the best at cars! 🥺
@@AmarisLWit's just that for an automatic transmission, the computer has a good amount of say over how "hard" it shifts. With nothing wrong or malfunctioning, the computer "tune" can call for harder shifts if the owner prefers it (usually also a _faster_ shift so it could actually be beneficial).
This video (and those Camaros you mention) is about when it is NOT in the tune, i.e. when the computer is "trying" to shift smoothly as normal but it isn't because of some malfunction.
@@nthgthOk makes sense. Thanks so much. I ended up having to get a torque converter. 😫
My transmission does both things he mentioned at certain temperatures, but there is a service bulletin out low line pressure due to improper sealing washers used from the factory.
I Love this guy!! Lol 😂
My gmc sierra did all that since I bought it brand new😂
What year? I bought an 09 sierra and when downshifting it jerks clunks forward as scotty described
I've learned so much from you,
I really appreciate 🙏 all your knowledge
If this guy was your grandfather, you would never need an auto shop 😂
Scotty: And if your Transmission is stuck! You are too late, you should have pulled it out.
All these problems are normal for the G37 lol. We will never know when it goes bad
That's why you should have gotten a G35 coupe like me. Bought brand new in 06. No issues to this day. As good as my 96' Maxima ever was.
I drive a 2007 Honda Accord coupe, if the car is parked overnight or park the whole day and I start up the car and move off immediately I get those same exact problems but if I start up, let the car idle for about a minute or two it is fine for however long I want to drive it
Speaking of Transmissions, I drive an 06 Toyota Matrix (manual), it has a really hard time going into reverse.
Someone in a Facebook group told me to shift into 3rd before going into reverse and it actually helps a LOT.
Can you explain why?? Is my transmission going out??
I have an 03 Matrix and what Scotty just said has been happening to me the last few days. It also acts funny when I make a left turn. And my dash lights keep going on and off...among other things..lol
Probably just something to do with a more worn out transmission and the gears not lining up. Shifting into 3rd using the synchro's probably aligns the reverse gear or something like that.
When my truck started not wanting to go into reverse I just go to neutral, let clutch out, then push it back in and she goes into reverse slicker than snot. In old cars reverse had no syncronizers so we always did that or the gears would grind. 1st gear was that way, too.
Scotty, you’re simply the best!
My transmission shifted hard with poor acceleration when my camshaft and crankshaft position sensors were bad and especially hard when the a/c was on. I don't know if or how those were connected, but replacement pretty much smoothed it out.
Haha my wife bought a 2019 charger RT, the bmw transmission, without letting me test drive it first. It has those hard downshifts. Otherwise it works beautifully. Could this be a software issue, anybody know?
Check for small vacuum leak to downshift valve.
^^^ this.
Could be. It’s a newer car after all. Do you have a warranty? It might be covered.
I had a 2010 Taurus SHO and it was doing the thing where it felt like I was rear ended when coming to a stop. The guy who sold me the car changed the fluid with Valvoline Maxlife multi-vehicle ATF. I changed all the fluid out with Motorcraft Mercon LV fluid, and it never did it again. Maxlife is great for older cars, but a lot of modern transmissions are super picky with what fluid you put in them.
It depends on the kind of transmission a dual clutch for instance is designed to shift hard because it's literally the fastest kind of gear based transmission currently in existence. Don't take blanket advice like this do some research on your car specifically if you are noticing something out of the ordinary. All of this kind of stuff is pretty common sense stuff that anyone would notice as not normal.
What about manual transmissions?
Don't be a lazy bastard, watch more of his videos and you'll get your answer.
I've never seen a manual transmission go "bad" unless absolute terrible abuse. The clutch might slip or the synchros wear out but those are replaceable parts.
@@lajya01 I've heard of pilot bearings and throwout bearings going out on manuals.
Hi Scotty what does it mean when i slow down to first gear for maybe a second i get a little power pushing through even though clutch is fully depressed. Honda cl9 04 .. appreciate your help. I read in the car records that the clutch release fork was 'stretched'.. could that be where its coming from?
Could be a vacuum leak so I would start there , replace lines looks for bad or cracked hoses, if not I’d check out the IAC (idle air control valve) and EGR valve , these cause lots of power and idling issues
My 09 civic did this I lived with it for 5 years
All 3 on a 2012 Ford Fusion.
Waited for the power train light to turn off and went that day to use it as trade in collateral.
Cosmetically and interior wise thing looked brand new.
2021: Scotty PRAY 🙏 ... 😄... very true. Most shops just look at older cars 🚘 and say 🤑🤑🤑...
I love you scotty. I pray in Jesus name that you and your home are saved.
Love your short videos scotty! Cheers
I had similar problem with my 2001 Dodge Intrepid (which i bought used in 2008). I had that car for five years with no major problems during that time, then, starting in 2013, I began experiencing a sudden slow and jerky upshift when accelerating, as well as, a jerky and hard downshirt when slowing. Transmission sure enough, but not mechanically. The transmission control module was faulty (which I found out from my mechanic). Got it replaced and all was well, for 6 months. My mechanic guaranteed their parts and labor for a year, so they replaced at no charge to me. Everything was fine, then it started doing it again, about 6 more months later. Took back to mechanic, and they honored their guarantee again. Not sure why the module kept crapping out, but it apparently had affect the engine and tranny adverse,y through all that, and the repairs were gonna cost more than the car was at that point, so i began car shopping.. lol
imma pray rn man bc both problems are happening to me rn 😭😭😭
And you haven't checked the fluid level yet but continue to drive
Finally first !!! 😭
no
As a nissian maxima owner I come across this video coincidentally when it’s time to change/ service my cvt😂
I was do some work on my 2000 Silverado and I forgot to plug the mass airflow sensor back in and it caused some very hard shift believe me Scott I was praying
Also a shift kit will make it shift hard, some people actually want that, and it's actually better for the clutches
I have 68 Catalina that I daily drive as my only car, the transmission is the original turbo 400 3 speed from the factory, it was slipping like that and making burning smells when I’d floor it and row thru the gears fast, I replaced my modulator and my trans filter and now it has been working perfectly, always try and fix the easiest cheapest things on a car before replacing big expensive stuff
i bought a 2003 kia sedona, goes great, the previous owner took good care of it, and who ever did the previous tranny fluid put too many, i pumped it all out from the top with a otc manual fluid pump and put it to level, it works great. it was still cherry red and not brownish.
Great tips as usual. Other considerations, slippage could be from a worn-out clutch (if it's a manual or dual clutch transmission) or low fluid in the torque converter.

Bwaaann(the head shake)
Bwaaan 😂😂😂❤️
It also can be the car computer.. I change 1 trans, had another looked at on my car . Came out be car ECM or ECU which ever term u prefer.. changed that and my check engine light gone, no more jerking into 1st gear or jump when put into gear ( car- 2002 Lexus gs 300)
I get the point but not always, I have a honda odyssey that had those issues and all it needed was transmission fluid change...except for the revving up.
0:05 really great advice grandpa
