  • Using Sunbrella canvas, Jim makes an 80 square foot boom tent for his small Catalina 22 sailboat. Here are some ideas you can use even though Jim is a little light on sewing skill.
    Now that I have finished the boom tent, I would change the dimensions a bit. I would go for a final finished size of 118 inches long and 88 inches wide. I would skip the taper and just make it a rectangular tarp. This project would be easier if the fabricator had the new worker bee motor that Sailrite sells.
    Jim's Little Boat is dedicated to helping beginning sailors and providing a video reference for work on their own boats. There are more than 50 videos in the Jim's Little Boat archives of You Tube. While some of the videos are very specific to Catalina 22 sailboats, most are general and apply to all small mono-hull sailboats.

    Hi Jim. I am also 75 and just bought my first sailboat. It’s the last thing on my bucket list. I purchased a 1983 Watkins 25. I’m 6’1” and liked the headroom height. I’m busy getting her ready for launch here on the upper Chesapeake. I’m learning a lot from your videos. Many thanks for the education. Happy sailing.

      I don't know anything about the Chesapeake except for Mitchner's book. I suspect there is much fine sailing to be had. I hope you make a video or two about your adventures.

      @@webemeierfamilyvideos1152 No, I am okay. Just getting old. My sailing partner had a stroke, and that kind of bummed me. I have taken a full time job, and I must have cataract surgery in late June. In addition I am flogging my book about teaching math to kids who hate school and hate math more. So, I am hoping to be in the water in early July. It will be a short season, but I hope to do a lot with it. Interesting side note. This year I am not spending much money on the boat. Once you put $14,000 into a $4,000 boat, there isn't much you can add to it. Of course, I could probably add roller furling for a very cost effective $3000. :) Might make a good video.

      I think it is worth the trouble and expense. All of the cockpit stays dry except the small area aft of the boom, and the cabin stays dry and airy.

Not exactly sure how he had it, but I know it isn’t a stock setup. Maybe I could pester you to have a look it it before I go underway ? I expect I need to purchase a few things.

    Put a zipper or snaps on the aft end and have a second tent that covers the aft rails and attaches to the boom tent and your cockpit will be dry!

    Great content! Question: What keeps the boom from going up when you tighten the halyard of the Mainsail? Two aluminum plates on the mast keep the luff from coming out of the mast track. Is that all? Thanks

    • @jimslittleboat4388
      @jimslittleboat4388  Před rokem

      Yeah, Brian, The plates are called mast gates. I get mine from mastgates.com. The aft end of the boom is held up by the topping lift.

    Hi Jim, I'm sailboat shopping myself. I'm looking for a pocket cruiser. I like the catalina 22 for ease of mast stepping and trailering. I've also considered a Montgomery 17. Have you any experience with this specific craft? Curious as i've never actually sailed one. Thanks

    • @jimslittleboat4388
      @jimslittleboat4388  Před rokem

      Michael, I have no experience with a Montgomery 17. But I can say the Catalina 22 is 3 or 4 times bigger than my Tanzer 17--probably has no relevance at all. The C22 is a really roomy day sailer and can be a good over-nighter for two. Liz McAffery has kind of created the ultimate Catalina 22 overnighter. I prefer to sail to a town and sleep in a hotel. :)

    Jim, hope all is well! I sail a Ranger 20 out of Portland OR, but am thinking about sailing in the Sound this summer. My plan is to moor this summer in Boston Harbor or Zintell's and drive up on the weekends. Would you recommend one of these or perhaps Budd inlet, in terms of weather, currents, etc? I was thinking to avoid the Budd Inlet marinas so I didn't have the sail the length of it every time I drive up. Appreciate any thoughts you have!

    • @jimslittleboat4388
      @jimslittleboat4388  Před rokem +1

      Boston Harbor is okay in the summer--for the most part. It is a bit open to the north, but we seldom get strong winds from the north in the summer. Zittle's is a bit more protected. The nice thing about those two marinas is that they are5 to 7 miles closer to stuff than Olympia. I keep my boat in Olympia and I have to sail or motor five miles to get to Boston Harbor. So every time I go out it is "head north for five miles" then decide where to go. There are many fine marine parks in lower Puget Sound, plus many DNR owned tidelands. Although you will need to buy me a beer to get my consolidated chart that shows all the marinas, parks, and public land on the same piece of paper. :)
