Kelly's parents divorced when she was six years old. Her mother was a school teacher and she couldn't financially afford all three of her children, so when she divorced, her son stayed with his dad, her sister then lived with her aunt, and Kelly, being the youngest, stayed with her mom.
Kelly's dad was never around after the divorce. She tried to talk with her dad but he never gave her the time of day. Then when she ended up winning American Idol in 2002, she has been trying to have a relationship with her dad that she never had. He still didn't want to. Since then, about four years ago her dad passed away. Kelly wrote this song eight years ago and she got married in 2013. Her husband treated their daughter like she wished she would have been treated.
This year though Kelly and her husband got a divorce. Now she has to pay out thousands of dollars each month for alimony and child support. Her ex husband lives in Montana and she lives in California. I don't know when she will sing this song again because of the divorce happening with her.
Her new song has a reference to this song. It's powerful.
She still sings it but she changed some of the lyrics. Her ex is completely out of that song and now it's about her picking up the pieces herself being independent and being a mom to her kids.

She wrote this song in reference to her biological father. What’s perhaps even more heartbreaking is eventually her now ex-husband did exactly all of those things as well… and he’s still asking her for money. And more and more and more. It’s pretty obscene.
Her catalog is HUGE- Because of You, Whole Lotta Woman, Stronger, Mr Know It All, any of her ‘Kellyoke’ covers that she opens her daily talk show with… BUT what y’all really MUST see if you’ve not is her 2022 Billboard Music Awards Opening. Wowza!!!!!!!
