  • Scotts Bluff National Monument is located in Western Nebraska. My daughter and I spend a half day there in August of 2017. We did some walking on the Oregon Trail and then hiked the Saddle Rock Trail that went along the bluffs which descended from the high grounds to the base of the monument. Beautiful place!

    I am currently at home recovering from surgery so I am binge-watching your channel enjoying all the national parks. I was pleasantly surprised to find this video on Scottsbluff National Monument. Scottsbluff is on the edge of my hometown Gering Nebraska. I of course feel this is a very beautiful Arium and I'm proud to have this park in my backyard. There is one trail that you missed and that is the Prairie View Trail. The Prairie View Trail goes east from The Visitor Center and allows you to hike or ride bicycle back into the city of Gering. There it connects with the Monument Valley pathways and you can ride all over or walk if you choose. I have been using this Trail since I was a toddler riding in the seat on the back of my mother's bicycle. When I got my first bicycle for my sixth birthday that was the first thing I wanted to be able to do was ride the Prairie View Trail on my own bike. That was 45 years ago and I still ride that trail regularly. It was interesting watching your video and seeing a visitors view of Scotts Bluff. The signs to be careful of falling is legit as people have fallen off before although most of them were the either intentional or the result of doing something stupid like walking off the trail after dark. I also appreciate your display of faith in the videos. If you ever pass through here again you are welcome to join us in worship at Central Church of Christ, we are on the road to Scott's Bluff and you would have driven right past us to get there. God bless and keep posting new videos.

      Thanks, Phillip! Nebraska gets a bad rap, but we really loved our stay in Western Nebraska. The area was beautiful and we found a lot of neat places to explore. Thanks for the "heads-up!" If we get back that way we'll need to hit that trail and join your guys at church. Appreciate the invitation and get well soon, brother!

      Thanks again, Jason! We've talked about hitting a lot on the trips - some of the recent videos (Scotts Bluff, Agate and Pine Ridge) were all done in one day. Probably a pace many are uncomfortable with, but its been working for me and the family. So glad you love your family. The memories (especially when you capture them on film) will only increase in value at time passes. You'll never regret it!

    Thank you for posting this. I'm currently on a National Park & Monument road trip tour out west and would have never given this place a second thought if it weren't for your video. The hike up to the top of the Bluffs was amazing, other than the rattle snake on the trail 10 yds from me.

      Wonderful to hear about your stop at Scotts Bluff. And sorry to hear about the close encounter with the snake - although some people look forward to those encounters! :) Enjoy the rest of your trip. Be safe!

    For many years, I have wanted to do a car trip along the Oregon Trail, so thanks for showing us some of the high points along this stretch of the American landscape. I noticed that NPS place some covered wagons around the Scotts Bluff Monument. That's fine (could do without the fake oxen), but one of the wagons is a Conestoga wagon. If I'm not mistaken, those were rarely if ever used on The Trail. Conestogas were an east of the Mississippi mode of transportation.

    I live in Omaha, Nebraska. We're on the very eastern side of the state along the Missouri River. It's about a seven (yep) hour drive to Scottsbluff NM. The Omaha metro area is roughly 850,000 people. Most people I know here have no clue about central and western Nebraska. Thank you for filming your visit and glad you enjoyed it.

    Randy, this is a nice add-on to the Oregon Trail video in Nebraska/Wyoming. Like you, I am very interested in actually walking the same trail that these pioneers traveled on, and you do an excellent job in TAKING US ALONG, . . . Mike

    Years ago while visiting scottsbluff ntl monument was told a few days earlier that a park ranger came across what he thought was a dead rattlesnake on that trail. As he reached down to remove it he found out the hard way it was sunning itself on the sidewalk. He was bit on the hand but was told he was doing ok. I'm sure one of those mistakes you wouldn't make a second time.

      Exact route not planned yet. We will hit Denver then, Rocky Mnts NP, Grand Teton NP, 6 days in Yellowstone NP then up to Glacier NP. Route home not figured yet. Could come back through SD or NE. Lots of options.

    Check out this years "Official" Scotts Bluff National Monument video. My son and I are the two guys bicycling on the bike trail (Prairie View Trail) with the yellow shirts on. The Ranger at the end goes to our sister congregation in Scottsbluff and he is also a teacher at Gering High School where my children go. He is a seasonal Ranger and he makes the videos.

      Americas Parks Yes I have. That is my home area. When I was in Boy Scouts (well over 30 years ago) we camped at Court House and Jail House Rocks. My wife grew up on a farm just west of Chimney Rock. I grew up in Gering and still live there. I live about a mile from the Robidoux Campground that you stayed at when you were here. If you ever come back though here to go Ash Hollow State Historic Site near Lewellen Nebraska (about 100 miles east of Gering) it has an old indian cave and lots of wagon wheel ruts on Windlass hill. The Wildcat Hills and Robidoux trading post just south of Gering are neat places. Lake Minatare northeast of Scottsbluff has a light house that was built by the CCC in the 1930s. It is a rare inland light house. Listen to me I sound like a tour guide.

    Great video Randy. always finding out about places that I haven't heard of before by watching your stuff.Man...Renting a car to be able to travel to other states is expensive! I was gonna e-mail you about that actually because ive never rented one to travel state to state. Im going to need to in the future.

    • @AmericasParks
      @AmericasParks  Před 6 lety

      The issue is not so much state to state as long as you return it to the same place you picked it up. It gets really pricey when you drop it off at another location. That's why we always end up where we started in all our trips.

    • @RobertLWard
      @RobertLWard Před 6 lety

      Out here...a lot of places dont allow you to take across state lines.I was just curious. the deal you got was pretty good for that long of a trip.

      Not sure if you know about this site, but here's a good resource to find all the NP's in each state. www.nps.gov/findapark/index.htm

      I've used that before. excellent resource. My main goal is completing the visits of the big " 59" and seeing other National sites when we can. This next trip( next week) is 4 National parks( 2 re-visits) and 3 monuments.
