I live in San Diego and I always take the direct flight to Manila with a short layover in Narita. I love the impeccable service, the good food and the friendly flight attendants. One of my favorite airlines!
This doesn't surprise me as Japan is known for excellent customer service. Can't wait to go back there.

I took the plane to to Japan years ago. JAL meaning Japanese air lines. I was flown there free because they had a show there. And wanted to see my black and twins that were born in Dc. First black.and white twins born in Dc .

A nice review of JAL Andrew! I have plans to travel to Japan again this year with both ANA/JAL but unfortunately due to the virus, my plans may have to be postponed. JAL usually sends their old Boeing 777s to Singapore which is a turn off as they are fitted with the older economy class.
Thanks alot mate! Ohhh thats unfortunate 😔 ya i realise that too. Probably because theres more demand for the SIN-NRT route, therefore they operate a larger capacity B777 but yeah alot of their B777 isn’t retrofitted

The seats have more leg room but the seats are hard. Regardless, JAL's service is top notch. And great video too.
Thank you for the video. Did you notice if the armrest on your left lifted. My husband and I will be sitting next to each other and want to raise the armrest in between the seats.
I'd say Economy in JAL fits in somewhere between Economy and Premium Economy in AA. Reason being: Extra seating space, better snacks (not just stupid pretzels with hardly any salt), metal utensils, and of course, the bidet. Not even First Class in most airlines offer bidets. A small downside compared to AA though would be the smaller drink options, and it looks like slightly less entertainment options on the screen as well. Those are very minor in comparison, however.
Great review! In terms of comfort in Economy, JAL wins the crown.

JAL economy is slightly better than Singapore Airlines economy in my opinion. I think JAL's 2-4-2 layout on some 787's really helps.

I travelled with JAL in May 2023. In the Boing 777 the seats were too hard and the food served on the return journey to Heathrow could only be described as "puke".
I’ve taken both ANA and JAL economy from the West Coast to Tokyo. To me, JAL (and this was the 777-300ER out of SFO) was far better. Seat pitch was 34”, which was great for me at 6’2” tall. ANA, on a 788 out of SeaTac and San Jose, was only 31”. Both airlines were in 3-3-3 configurations. I preferred the food on JAL as well. Finally, the flight in JAL landed at Haneda, while the ANA flights landed at Narita. Haneda is far easier getting into the city.
I’ve also taken JAL in J class between SFO and HND on their 777. Even though it’s a strange 2-3-2 configuration, I don’t think I’ve had a better sleep in any other business class. EVA rivaled it, but I thought JAL was slightly better. We get a lot of airline points, so we’ve been able to take international J flights on JAL, ANA, EVA, Cathay and Singapore. JAL remains my favorite for both comfort and convenience. Plus, the timing of JAL’s flights returning from SE Asia allows one enough time to leave the airport (HND) and get into Tokyo proper for some great food and shopping while on a layover.
The current SQ economy meals (no salad, no soup, no starter) look so modest compared to JAL!

Great review! Skytrax is sometimes not accurate, but it is correct with the ranking that JAL has best economy class, especially the 787s, as its the only airline with 2-4-2 configuration (sq chose a denser 3-3-3 configuration sadly)
I’m definitely not a fan of Skytrax but they definitely got this right imo
Hello, I've been looking for information regarding seat reclining on Japan Airlines 787-8 Economy class but surprisingly none of reviewers ever mentioned this feature. Seat's description on JAL website said "no reclining". I cannot imagine seats without reclining for a long flight from Los Angeles to Tokyo even economy class. Can you verify this. Thank you so much.
Sadly i have not tried their B787-8, but the seats recline just fine on the B787-9. Good recline angle too
was on a 787-8 flight from Haneda to LHR back in 2020, and I remember the seat to normaly recline
I found the seats to be very hard. Definitely have to go for a walk and get some circulation. Despite the poor seats, the service is amazing.
The seats are not made to recline. They are a different type of seat, it’s best to watch a video on them. The advantage you don’t have someone recline in your space however I find the seats, hard,uncomfortable and not enough space.

I like the 2-4-2 seating as the dreamliner was designed to have but, isnt the leg room shorter than their 777s? Customer service is of course top notch on japanese carriers!

787 economy class should configured 2-4-2 like JAL.
it was made for 2-4-2, but airlines decide it to 3-3-3 in other to be more "profitable". But I don't lose the hope that another airline put the 787 in 2-4-2.

Really didn't video the configuration of the seat itself. Most people want to know what the entire seat looks like including the pitch and recline especially for long distance flights. Next time maybe you can do that when you board. Otherwise very good review.

Pretty good video. Some of your pronunciation of words I could not understand. It's understandable because of your accent.
You should slow down the taxiing, takeoff, and landing sequences of your video as this tends in my opinion to be the best part of a flight video. The landing by the pilots in your video was excellent given the rain in Kuala Lumpur. I flew the Japan airlines 747 from Singapore to Tokyo where I began in Colombo, Sri Lanka. This was a great flight. I am a supporter of Japan airlines and Oneworld alliance airlines. Good Luck to you.

The Economy seats are too small. They are not made for western people or anyone above average height. The service is fantastic but I find the seats very uncomfortable especially for a long hall flight. I am 6’2 and have long legs.

Terrible flight... San Diego to Narita. They served us fish shavings over rice. I was starving. Service is mediocre at best. Asian and ana is significantly better. JAL sucks.
Been flying the Narita - San Diego and fro with JAL ever since, it has been a pleasant experience for me. But this… I’m sorry you experienced that.
I had to stop watching in the middle because of the super annoying music.
