    Both keyboards, we are told, are played with their factory default settings. Good quality headphones (and ears, for that matter!) reveal that the Tyros5's global factory reverb setting is noticably "dryer" than that of the Genos, which may well affect a listener's subjective assessment. But let's be fair, both are quite incredible sounding musical instruments - the skill of the musician plays a very significant part in how good a performance sounds. Or to put it another way... Peter Baartmans on a 1980's Portatone would still waaay outclass any attempt by me on the very, very latest kit!! ;)

    Very good comparison! They both sounds great. But I like the sound of tyros more after playing about few hours on genos. The main problem of Genos is heavy compression (and its not about master compressor) that you can't turn off. The dynamic range on tyros is incredible. For jazz, orchestral and instrumental music tyros is perfect, but for electronic genres Genos is better with his compression and new sliders/knobs. Also I personally just hate touch screens (and they also remove half of buttons because of it!). The new S.Art2 voices are good (flugelhorn especially!), built-in expansion memory is perfect, 76 keys is nice, revodrums are good also. But sounds of tyros is more balanced IMHO, especially for jazz or cinematic/film/game type of music. For more modern/electronic music Genos is really better.

      Your comments are right on target. When it comes to acoustic sounding instrumentation T-5 wins, Genos succeeds in the electronic music sound. If you are trying to decide between the two, I think you have to know what types of music you are likely to play. Kudos to Yamaha, they have gradually developed superior instruments!

    Easily the Yamaha. Perfect for a pensioners bungalow. It's the Revo drums and the clarity of the sounds. I'm looking forward to the day I'll be able to afford a second hand Genos in, say, 50 years. That is, if I'm still alive!! Of course, by then, keyboards will probably have built in teas-made's and toasters. You can't beat a nice cup of tea at the end of a tiring set. I'd like to see one bolted to the front of a Mobility Scooter, so you could go shopping while jamming.

  • @dare2win215
    @dare2win215 Před 5 lety +1

    LOL at people commenting which sounds better: Yamaha uses the same old samples only changing fx and titles in many cases. The significant improvements in Genos are primarily physical. The new samples are, in reality, realitively (to say Tyros 5 vsp 3) few. Outside of the SA2 voices, I still struggle to hear a vast difference between Tyros 5 and S-950! S-970 and S-975 actually have much better synths, IMO and more ethnic voices.

    Great demo, and the Yamaha Genos sounds much closer to the real instruments with the articulations, but selling 2 kidneys won't be enough to afford it. Aren't there any software instruments (VSTi) with great samples but also acoustic model to support the articulations ? There are some excellent sound fonts available, but what they are missing are the set of articulations, and having separate samples for each doesn't seem to be feasible. If such VSTi's were to be available, a decent upper mid-range MIDI keyboard would probably be something in reach of many more.

      that are the same as Tyros 2 like saxophones but none of the SA2 type

    Tyros 5 has Music Finder which gives you 1,812 songs and sets up the keyboard at the touch of a button. Genos does not have that. It also has a Repertoire button, a Freeze, and a Recommend button. Yes the whole keyboard is controlled by good old- fashioned buttons NOT a touch screen. In many ways the sounds are better on the T5 and Yamaha calls it the KING of Keyboards. Why buy an expensive genos, when you can get a second hand Tyros 5 76 note for silly money on e-bay.

    • @003Darren

      The Genos now has a function called playlist. All the old Tyros5 music finder records (1812 songs) can be uploaded into the Genos. No problem. The playlist is like music finder but much more including midi songs etc. the functionality of the playlist is endless. I owned a T5 and got bored with the whole keyboard,. The Genos in lighter, smaller, more powerful, black, touch screen is the way to go and I must not forget the Revo drums, the 76 key bed feels great too.

  • @mrdali67

    With the recent retail price drop, Genos got much more compelling. Its still more expensive than the competitors but its also a giant leap ahead in both overall sound quality and how easy it is to get the factory sounds to sound like a million. Not gonna argue if one or the other keyboard has a better flute or guitar sound since its a personal thing what you like, but Yamahas SA sounds are just much much more easy to use for even beginners than what the other brands has. Its also kinda indesputable that Genos will always sound better than any prior Tyros model even with the samples that they share, as the whole sound generation has better processing chips and DA converters than the T5. So the same sampled Guitar played on a T5 and Genos with DSP off on both instruments the sound is clearer in Genos always. And plus that most people trying to sell an older T1-2-3-4 or 5 on the net really need a reality check of what a 2,4, 6 or 10 year old instrument of these kinds is worth .. the answer is , even a T5 is just about 4 years old, i wouldn't pay i dime over 1500 Euro for one .. its old tech .. its not a 40 years old classic synth so its really not much worth, and I still see people try to sell a T5 for upwards 3k Euro, when i only need 500 Euro more for a brand new Genos .. lol The genos is only slightly more expensive now than a T5-76 when it came out. I guess Yamaha either were a little optimistic of how much they could charge for the Genos and still sell enough, or they put the price high to start with to get all the 1st buyers that wants it right at release to pay a little extra and once they get their production up on full speed they drop the retail price to a more realistic value.

      Doug, I totally disagree with you (with respect for your opinion). I owned all the Tyros and now I'm a Genos user. Tyros2 or 3 and even 4 have a poor DSP processor and a lower-resolution DAC inside. They also have less onboard tweak functions to improve the sound. So, it's absolutely impossible compare old Tyros with Genos. Also the same DSP effects are improved from Tyros5 to Genos (Real Reverb on Genos is ABSOLUTELY BETTER than T5 Real Reverb).
      So, how can you tweak your sounds on Tyros2 or 3 if you have limited tweaking functions on them?

    So much more keybed flex in the Genos.....not good on a £3600 keyboard. Finally gets a touchscreen but omits the ability to raise or tilt it. Apart from that I would still have one....lol.

      And that is the exact reason why Yamaha will always overprice their top keyboard a thousand pounds more than they should and just because they can do it, knowing that they will not loose any amount of bussiness by doing so.

    The same sound engine, basicaly the same keyboard. Genos should be bought for new implemented options in the OS, not because of few new sounds.
    With that being said, Tyros 5 is the the worst Yamaha to be bought now, PSR is much better solution, noticeably cheaper, and with ability to change drums components inside style editor. For any kind of editing T5 is useless.

    • @MaestroRonaldoDias
      @MaestroRonaldoDias Před 8 měsíci +1

      Negativo, basta você conectá-lo ao PC e verás a mágica acontecer no T5. A Yamaha apenas TRANSFERIU os recursos de edição para o Expasion Manager, algo que deixou a relação do T5 muito mais madura e profissional sem as limitações do T4.

    • @BojanBojovic
      @BojanBojovic Před 8 měsíci

      @@MaestroRonaldoDias You just repeat Yamaha marketing bullshit. Tyros 5 is Yamaha's lost child, no Drum Setup, no portamento, no scales for individual Right sections, all available on PSR at that time. Not only that, but they never updated it to have what S975 had later, whcih was more than half the price. On top of that, it was shipped without any expansion memory, Tyros 5 was actually a joke. Pissing on their customers who wanted an upgrade from T4. I constantly receive emails from people asking why they can not install the newly purchased expansion pack.
      Tyros 5 was missing many features available on Tyros 4 and earlier models, and all they got is unfinished YEM which still can not do what Voice Editor could, so no velocity curve for each element, no note off option for a layer, zero drum editing capabilities inside an existing pack or on the keyboard, oh but they gave you an option to play strings will 4 fingers and the keyboard automatically splits the fingers into a separate instruments. Wow, such a nice bonus for pensioners and retired people who play to their families once a year.
      And yes, my comment is 5 years old, so defending T5 back then was bad, but doing it today is asinine.

      "too expensive garbage ???" Whether the price is right is open for debate, ( a manufacturer will always try to optimize the return on investment) but to call the Genos "garbage" is ridiculous. I tend to side with those who say the only rational reason for trading a Tyros 5/6 for a Genos are the convenient sliders and the lower weight.

      I think hardware still has some advantages over software, although I don't have a workstation keyboard I do have Halion 6
      but both the Tyros 5 and Genos not only sound better than Halion 6 but at least with hardware once you pay for it it's
      your's outright without the faff of dongles or license keys. Yamaha workstations are not garbage.

      @@Steven-zg5bq It's highly unlikely I'm going to buy a workstation keyboard as they are more aimed at performers rather than producers. I would buy either a Yamaha workstation or a Motif as a last resort. The Genos styling is a little reminiscent of an 80s electric organ, I have noticed that mainly with the buttons. A Yamaha Motif rack module would probably suit my needs better as I don't tend to use auto accompaniments. I do prefer the styling of the Tyros keyboards over Genos. Maybe it's time for silver to make a comeback.

    The Tyros 5 is still a fantastic keyboard. The Genos has a wider sound and really good Revo drums. You can't go wrong with either of these keyboards to be honest.
    Well they are good for the sort of musicians they are aimed at and that is any one man situation or anyone who is really goosd at playing live using auto accompaiments
    and one touch settings and they are also an invaluable tool for songwriters. But for midi music production? no, although I very nearly bought a Tyros 4 or 5 thinking you
    don't have to use them they way they are meant to be used but there really is no sense in buying one if auto accompaniments is not your thing because your paying for
    a load of features you will never use and to be honest you can always find VST instruments that sound far more superior or buy a workstation or sound modules. And
    also sorry to say but VST drum libraries still blow revo drums out of the water if music production is your thing. Yes both keyboards sound good played the way they
    are supposed to be played by people who are actually really good at playing them or willing to learn to play using auto accompaniments but these keyboards are not
    for keen amateurs like myself. If you only want to pay cheesy public domain songs like Jingle Bells then you can do that on any keyboard.
