The Incredibles vs Incredibles 2 Animation Differences

- For some, a big gap in between The Incredibles and The Incredibles 2 may have been slightly irritating, however the space in between the two films gave creators the time to reevaluate the appearance of the film and its characters-and that’s exactly what they did.
Brad Bird, the creator and director of the Incredibles movies, has been a gold mine for Disney Pixar studios since 2004. That’s why when Disney decided to go ahead with The Incredibles 2 fourteen years later, its large budget-and advanced technology of course-allowed for animation changes that’ll blow your mind.
From changing Dash’s and Mr.Incredibles face completely, to adding in more details into scenes that existed in both films, watching scenes from these movies side by side is earth shattering-kind of like the Undermines Attack.
Even Edna Mode got not only an appearance change, but a home makeover as well. However, the best part may be getting to see more of Jack Jack, his demon form, and how that animation changed the dynamic of the Incredibles family and the entire film franchise.
What do you think of the animation differences between the two films? Do you think they were drastic or done naturally given all the improvements in technology? Did you catch any of them? Which of the two films did you like more?
Incredibles 2
I noticed the animation was different, but both of them had great work put together by the animators. I suppose Incredibles 2, since it helps us finish what The Incredibles were doing.
Incredibles 2, because they finally found out Jack Jack has superpowers.
I caught most of them, especially the characters. Of the two movies, I prefer the first. I enjoy the story and art a little more in the first, than the second. One of the biggest differences in the characters, which I don't think you mentioned is the fact in the second movie, the Underminer doesn't have a chin. If you missed that I recommend a closer look.
Both
Something I noticed right away is that the tone of 2 looked a lot less gloomy than 1
Yea it’s so much more vibrant overall
I like to look at each film from the eyes of Bob and Helen.
The first one you see how Bob sees the world. The second one how Helen sees the world. Especially because even though the entire Parr family is in the story and it focuses on them, it’s also a gives a perspective focus on both of them as heroes.
Because it's made only for children. Whereas the first movie was made for both children and adults. Kids would overlook the fact that Syndrome made a damn super hero genocide, and adults would realize that and take it into more into consideration to what happened.
The early CGI with harsher shadows does give that gritty vibe.
@@damsen978What a dumb statement
Not gonna lie, Tony looks so much better in the sequel compared to the first!
Certainly. I never understood why Violet liked Tony in the first movie, in the second one they fixed it well.
Me too.
Ikr
Hell yeah the first thing I noticed
In the original he looks like a popular confident guy. The sequel makes him seem like a wimp
More saturated colors, more shading and depth, Brighter and more Modern feel to everything. All in all, I was stoked when I heard this hit theaters, then saw it on Disney+ and loved it. I watched the first one just before, for nostalgic purposes, and the sequel Totally held up. There were some oddball Plot-Holes, but I figured it’s an amazing story with the Incredibles family and it stays fairly true to the original comedic energy from the first film, with its own twist.
I would've loved to see Syndrome with the newer animation we have. He'd look awesome
Omg ikr? And mirage!
@@adaomauche3882 Mirage would look exquisite
@ML TV is there a reason she wasn't even mentioned in this...
@EternalStorm796 good question. Maybe considering the fact that she's been Syndromes right hand person at the time, she's been doing jail time since she was part of his organization
@@EternalStorm796 Mirage wasn’t in the 2nd movie most likely because the voice actress who voiced her in the 1st movie passed away in 2014 so that’s probably why she wasn’t mentioned in the 2nd movie
Honestly I think the second movie was able to improve and stay faithful to the first one at the same time ☺️
I disagree, the second movie isn't made for adults as well as for kids, so not having the dark tone of the first one alienates the fans of the first movie. It's like Pixar made the sequel for your kids, not for you and your kids like in the first movie.
@Damsen I think the second movie does get pretty dark, actually... like the idea that heroes/your parents could be turned against you is pretty dark?
@@MidnightEden Do you really think that? It's one of the most over-used plot in movies.
@@damsen978 just because it's "overused" doesn't make it any less dark though? Like maybe the shock value is down... but it's still a pretty dark plot concept
@@MidnightEden Yes it does, it definitively does. Mind control is the most boring plot point ever and it's so over-used that it causes no impact to the audience whatsoever, as you said, shock value down, it also drags the concept down a lot.
Plus, it's nowhere near as dark as a Super hero genocide. Incredibles 2 looks like kinder garden compared to 1.
When will people learn that animation is not the same thing as character models and/or character design?
Animation is the way models move, not the way they look.
The models are done separately by character artists, not animators
Ikr? 💀 he kept talking about textures, details, and character design elements
And then tops it off with "animated more realistically"
yeah
Especially embarrassing for a channel revolving around animation. Also, imo the largest difference overall between the 2 movies is in the lighting, which wasn't mentioned in the video.
aside from dash's hair, i didn't see any change other then better animation technology between the 2 movies in terms of character design.
@@abiean222 The fabrics, the skin, the wrincles are a part of character design + Overall render improvements and lighting.
But none of it is animation
I really liked this new animation from incredibles 2.
Same here and I Love Animation of setting in 1960s for this Film
Same
I prefer the old mr incredible model than the new model
@@ironcore2008 That’s fair. Also prefer the dialogue he said in the first movie too as well.
@@bighand1530 what dialogue
I kinda prefer the older animation to be honest because of how good it still looks to this day and it gives off nostalgia and childhood vibes, like I really love how the new movie looks and you can definitely see the improvement :).
The only changes I didn't like were these: 1. Dash's super speed seems to be a little slower despite it being smoother. In the first movie, you could vaguely see him while running showing how fast he was. 2. Helen seems younger and less middle aged. Her being older in the first made her seem a little more like a mother. 3. Jack Jack's body language made him seem more like a 5 year old in an infant's body. It's a little difficult to explain, but just things I've noticed. 🤷
The one about Helen is so true. That's why I don't like her in the second film..
The animation from the original still holds up really well and still remains my favorite pixar film to this day
I know a lot of people like the more saturated colors of the 2nd one because we've all been conditioned to be drawn towards brighter and more vibrant colors by a lot of the CGI movies that came after Incredibles 1, but the more subdued colors of the first one were a storytelling choice to make the super exploits look a bit more grounded and to also juxtapose the ordinariness of their civilian lives with their superheroics on Syndrome's island lair which was super lush and vibrant. With the increased color saturation of the 2nd one, a lot of that visual journey of the 1st isn't present.
Thank you it really bothers me when people think vibrant = better automatically, for me it ironically makes colour 'duller' sometimes because nothing actually stands out anymore.
Thank you! It’s totally fine for people to like the new one. But I actually don’t think the vibrant colors and more cartoony style fits with the original vibe and theme of the series. Something is just off to me.
Man. I have been looking for someone who shares my opinion here. I also prefer the more subdued colours of the first movie whereas, while saturated colours isn’t bad, it gets super overdone, especially in most of Pixar’s recent films and makes it difficult to distinguish a lot of stuff.
@@captainmarvelwilson508
This is exactly what I was thinking!!! A lot of the movies (with some differences in style of course) kind of look the same. I feel like after Inside Out, a lot of movies looks very similar to it. Like, it looks like Dash, Violet, and Riley could exist in the same universe (especially the new one coming out).
The animation improved, but the sequel, not so much according to fans. (Well, I think it’s a great sequel, and I loved it)
I like there sequel. But it’s not without criticism
@@bighand1530 I agree, it’s good but not better
@@tjz3158 One thing that threw me off was some of the dialogue
It's not that bad, but compared to the original.....
It's good, definitely has a subversive feminist tone throughout the film though
If we could have the first movie (poses, scenes, dialogue) with the visual improvements of the second one, that would have been great.
Thank you for putting your time into finding most similar frames. I was watching cinema wins right now and decided to compare both parts and here you are with your fresh video) Like it was published just for me)
I honestly like the 1st movies animations better
Yeah it looks more realistic in my opinion
You shouldn’t lmao
@@Momo-zs9nknah
Personally, I prefer Dash's character design in the original.
Same here
Yeah, tbh the new look is a bit distracting.
he has a giga chad facial stricture 😹 i guess they wanted to make him look more related to his father?
He look more chuby / chibier, in the sequel.
Totally agree , also I didn’t like how they lowkey made him annoying in the second one . The 1st one was just so different in my opinion .
They definitely look more pale in the first movie
It had a gloomy look to it- which made the movie seem more grounded in reality for me
Awesome video! I pay attention to animation quality a lot, and it was funny to watch the second movie as everyone looked like different characters!
They don't look like different characters though. The things that make those characters recognizable are still there and they're very much those people. Tony did change a bit, but was obviously going to.
The biggest change I've ever seen them make is Andy in Toy Story 4 and that's one of my main problems with that movie.
@@flatsamiscool I understand, now that I think about it Andy changed a lot in the Toy Story movies. Awesome video!
I love how they kept the same style and the characters all look the same but they still improved the animation and made it visually appealing
I got to say to me the background changes are amazing and the characters are amazing better than the original all do part of me want to say the original textures are better than most because it the original but still seeing the change also feels like it kind of fits the whole story when you think about it like the first one is just the start of the family become super hero’s finally the world isn’t that great when there’s no super heroes so the art style isn’t that great but when the world now have super heroes again the world and things are about to get better even the art style
Tony got that biggest glow up in animation history
sequels always have way higher quality
@@DFwire Or Atlantis Milo’s Return
the animators really improved with lighting and saturating the characters to make them look more alive and less dull! i can say 100% watching the movies side by side, they all look way better! especially my girl violet 😸
But generally though, in the original it was a subtle way of juxtaposing how ordinary their civilian lives were vs their colourful superhero exploits. When everything's vibrant, that's lost
what had me the most impressed was Frozone's powers. the ice looked so damn real in the second movie 😮
As a fan of Dash, I actually liked how he looked in the first movie more. I don't like that his eyes look smaller and his jaw looks bigger in the second film. But Tony is a HUGE improvement. He looks much cuter and more handsome in the second film.
I'm just glad that Pixar didn't change the animation style like DreamWorks did with Puss in Boots: The Last Wish.
I didnt watch it yet but what Ive seen from the trailers the animation is very polished, definitely better and nuanced, plus it has cool effects. For an older franchise like Puss in Boots, this rebranding wasn't bad, and I think it helped market Puss in Boots to a newer audience, managing to keep it fresh. So, all in all, I dont mind the change, however, to each their own, I guess.
I think it was a good change. It differentiated itself from the Shrek franchise and the bloody awful 2011 prequel. The movie almost looked like something my mom could tolerate, almost.
I really loved the animation but they could have just made a new movie for that animation style, the sequel feels and looks different from the first one. there was a charm in the old animation then too so it was a shame.
Yea i was a little upset that they changed the style becuz it fells like its not in the same universe as Shreks and Puss's first movie. But it was still an amazing sequel. 💓💓
Hopefully they won't do the same thing to Kung Fu Panda 4.
It just shows how Pixar has improved with their animations.
I didn't know Tony was the same person when I watched the second movie.
YESS I KNEW THEY LOOKED DIFFERENT
I've been wanting to see a comparison video, thank you
I do prefer the first movie appearances of each character more than 2, however it's good either way
Every Pixar movie from toy story 1 forward is essentially displaying the small improvements in animation the studio made based on issues they ran into in the chronological movie before it. The improvements pretty much stack like Legos, and the further apart a sequel is created from its predecessor, the more noticeable the improvements are.
How did I see this 1 hour after this was published? That’s rare
I think it's rather incomparable. Like, 2004 against 2018? That's 14 years of animation evolution which is a lot. But it's true that comparison only shows how much evolution was done.
Dash will always be my wittle adowable hun bun no matter what movie we're talking! 🥰 He's soooo cute!!
Incredible 2 slaps 🔥🔥🔥🤧💯
I still watch Incredibles 1 better
This is why i like the second movie more
Me too.
Why? cause it looks “better”? The first one had way better writing and depth to the story and characters….
Dash is my little cutest guy forever! 💖🥰😍
I thought they added those lines under Violet's eyes. Turns out they were always there.
Bro-, For a second i thought The incredibles 1 Jack, was a animation test-
On October 24 is the 20th anniversary of The Incredibles
To be honest, I didn't notice ANYTHING the first time through. That left me wondering how many Tonys exist because I couldn't recognize him from the first movie 😅
everyone saying tony looked better in the sequel, i beg to differ. dude went from hot stoner to a ken doll. but yea im glad they made a sequel. hope they make a 3rd one. wanna see more violet and her fight scenes.
Amazing video 👌
Dash look more Tom Holland than before.
Violet's hair looks more realistic on the first movie
They gave Dash’s nose a cuter shape.
i hope you guys know that this doesnt mean that the original looks bad
3:37 honey why am I animated differently?
2004 feels me remember my childhood
The guy who has been incredible
And that’s when we learn that different is great
The coloration in the sequel (The Incredibles 2) makes the characters look more warm and vibrantly vivid.
Honestly seeing stuff like this is pretty cool! Gives you the idea of how CGI movies look like then vs. now. 2 (As well as other movies like Cars 3, Finding Dory, Inside Out, Toy Story 4, Turning Red, etc.) is practically eye-candy (Especially if you watch it in 4K with HDR like from the 4K Blu-Ray), but I have a soft-spot for the style of the first one. Same goes for Toy Story 1 and 2, Cars 1, Bug's Life, Monsters Inc. and Finding Nemo. In fact, I love the style of CGI animation from the 90s and 2000s like in advertisements, bowling alley animations, video games, music videos, TV shows and much more.
1 looks like animation tests before 2😭
Tony looks wayyy better in the 2nd movie
I wish the incredible 3 could come out
I said it once I'll say it again Disney should remake or reanimated the older movies so it look like the others same for dreamwork
I also noticed that in the second movie dash looks way too buff for a ten year old😭 but I guess he takes after his dad lol
It would have been better to see more consistent animation between the first movie and the second. Especially, since the ending of the first movie was reshot as the beginning of the second.
They really did a good job, everyone looks better but not so different that it's off putting. They did a much better job then some other movies *cough* HTTYD THW. Srsl, in that movies some characters are barely recognizable (Valka, Toothless)
The first incredibles animation style maybbe dated compared to how its done now but the one thing that the original movie had over the sequel was the coloring, the original movie had more bland and muted colors to complement the more serious story, for a kids movie the original incredibled was very mature with the themes and stories it told, it didn't always need a stupid joke or something out of place to make it interesting cause the story idea alone about all superheroes being forced into retirment was interesting enough for the time, I think the sequel to the movie did do some things good but it will never hold a candle to what made the original so good
I loved the improvements, but I honestly felt more personality and energy from elastigirl from the first movie. She is my favorite character and looked a lot different in the second one. I guess its her eyes and expressions? I don't know.
The 2nd movie's animation quality looks like just how We remember the 1st one looked😂
Wow that’s *incredible*
Not gonna lie the old animation has a certain unique charm to it, I guess that’s also my nostalgia speaking.
Yeah, when I saw the incredibles 2, I really noticed that in part 1, all characters literally looked as pale in color, but in part 2, all characters have their skin contrast. This same is also with Toy Story as well. It literally proves that Pixar actually did work hard on their animation style all over the years😯
I hate the second one, they changed the character’s image so so much and I was able to notice it since the first time I saw the second movie no side by side comparison needed. The first one was superior by far in animation, characters and plot. The second one just altered and modernized for no reason.
I can get where you are coming from
0:10 yes, Obiviously the Update Art Style, that pixar has used since 2015.
Not everything is thanks to the animators, please consider to give shoutouts to the modelling, rigging, surfacing and simulation department, as a rigger, Im tired of people praising animators for the deformations I create and design
My childhood ❤️❤️❤️❤️
I noticed they added more dust in the second movie when the underminer showed up.
There’s something about the second movie that makes the first movie looked unfinished in the modern day. In some ways, it looks better in terms of today’s modern style of animation
The only change I dont like is how they animated Violet's forcefields in the sequel. In the first movie they actually look like forcefields whereas in the sequel they look more like purple bubbles.
I will say that I preferred Dash’s sense of speed in the first film as it was not as smooth as 2. But I think that makes him look faster as you can’t track him. The dinner scene with Dash in 2 just looks like every skit about a little boy and how they run off quickly to do something. His speed was definitely not utilised as nearly as much as it was in the first film.
I wish they would make a special edition version of The Incredibles with this new animation never before seen footage
I kinda liked the old features of the old one tbh, ofcourse the details and colors of the new one is better but I still like how the old one looks
Tony literally Transformed
He has a completely new face and everything
I also thought Edna was a Guy when I was younger due to her voice
I don't know what makes you think that Dash's hair looks more realistic now. To me it's completely otherwise IF we wanna talk about just realistically. The new hair are everything but not a "real" hairstyle.
Original hair were perfect for a little boy and most importantly real looking like. No funny cut of bouncing slice of hair in the air.
Also nice platinum blonde hair chanched to dirty blonde, c'mon Disney!
his cheeks more chubby.
Sorry but seeing how they remake my favorite character like this. Dash's new desing was my biggest disappointment of the movie, sadly
the Incredibles is one of my favorite animated movies of all time. Part 2 was good but not at the level of the first movie.
I absolutely love the improvement in quality, but I despise the change in character design.
Violet had a complete glow up, her chin became larger and fuller in a triangular form for the second film, her hair got longer to her butt, her hair is more dense and realistically shiny, her clothes are fitted and bright, she moves like a normal girl, her eyes are more round and violet, her outfits resembles her headband colors and she even got thicker in leg size, she has more of curve in her hips and legs rather than the first movie and we get to see more of her emotions and actions as a teen
The sequel is an improvement, but my major gripe is the skin. Subsurface scattering is one of the new techniques used, that gives skin it's slight red glow as a result of skin being slightly translucent and blood being red. However, nothing about it is "slight" in Incredibles 2. The subsurface scattering being set to high and the color grading being oversatured ends up making all human characters look like their skin is glowing red. I found it unnatural and distracting.
That nit pick out of the way, I wonder why companies like Pixar and Dreamworks don't go back to do shot-for-shot remakes (with the same audio) of their oldest classics. They already have updated versions of their main character models due to sequels / prequels. Specifically, I'd love to see Toy Story 1, Monster's Inc, and Shrek remade faithfully with modern animation and rendering techniques. I think specifically Sid from Toy Story 1 has aged poorly, and desperately needs a Tony Rydinger like glow-up.
Jack-jack’s fire form also got an update
I love The Incredibles 2 so much for the Animation!❤ I just wish the plot and a few characters (Elastigirl) were written differently!
I want to rewatch the first movie with the graphism of the 2nd one... Damn
Dash looks like he put on some muscle compared to the first one.
This begs the question, if they weren't gonna recreate the original models, why did they stuck with the idea of picking up onto the first movie's cliffhanger?
because it would... look good
🙄
@@teleportingpotatoe what?
they did recreate them, yeah? they just made them look better, same models
I just don’t know why they changed Tony THAT much, like he’s unrecognizable!! They didn’t do that with any other character.
The first movie is GEM in every Way and was a Big challenge for pixar & brad bird (spoiller Alert) when they fall in the ocean and get wet or dash run on water the angels of shooting when dash run in the forest every thing is fantastic for 2004 movie and it always be my top after 14 years its natural pixar improv they quality in every way possible and this sequal is fire👌 ,thaks for the video man
How you gonna call modellers “animators” that’s a whole different department😂 the people who model the characters are modellers, the people who Animate and move the characters are the Animators, the lighting and texturing are the people in that department which comes after Animation… and the special effects are after all that… how u have a channel based on Animation but know nothing bout how the industry works😂😂😂😂
They all look more neat in 2018 compared to 2004
I don't think it's my bias or anything, but the first movie despite having older technology than the sequel, still has more "real" facial expressions, like what they show to us, they mean it. While in 2 they look more childish? Like they look like generic cartoony expressions instead of realistic, i'm talking about the expressions themselves. When Syndrome sends his missiles to kill Elastic Girl and her transmission ends, the face of disbelief in Bob looks unironically incredible, i really feel bad for him in that scene. I never got any sense of this in the second movie.
I really love 💕😘 both incredibles 1and2
Wow, this whole movie was eye candy.
I think the 2004 animation looks more realistically human and (better), and the new animation looks more cartoon tbh!
It’s amazing! By rewatching the first one next to the sequel, one could say it looks unfinished in comparison? lol
Our technology just wasn’t as good as it is today.. not unfinished.. just looks outdated obviously
I've been waiting for somebody to do this for the longest time.
Am I the only one who prefers the older animation? I really felt this one looked way too red. Like, everything had a red hue to it, and it just didn't look right to me. Don't get me wrong, overall it looks amazing... but I don't understand the red hue.
Secondly, I feel like Winston Dever didn't fit stylistically at all, in this world. He almost looked polygon... whereas everyone else has rounded facial edges and features. Again, he looks great, but I just don't think stylistically he fits this world.
Absolutely love the film, and Incredibles is by far my favorite of the Pixar world. I really hope they continue this franchise... and I don't care if I have to wait 10 more years for it.
I was bron on the same day this came out.
So yeah, I noticed all the differences.
The animators did amazing 😆
