  • As the Qing dynasty seemed to collapse after emperor Xianfeng's catastrophic rule, the enthronement of Prince Zaichun, crowned as emperor Tongzhi, allowed for the Tongzhi restoration to take place. His short reign, mostly controlled by his mother and stepmother’s regency, would see a restoration of the Qing dynasty.

Great video! I'm writing a novel based on the life of Empress Xiaozheyi, and this helped refresh my memory on several points. And I'd have enjoyed it even if it wasn't research related. There is one inaccuracy that someone's mentioned already in the comments - Sushun and Duanhua, Prince Zheng were indeed brothers (half-brothers, being the sons of Ulgungga and two different mothers) but Zaiyuan, Prince Yi was a more distant relative. Also, I saw your comment about how it's sad that the Daoguang Emperor didn't choose Yixin, Prince Gong as his successor rather than Yizhu. Agreed! Prince Gong was remarkably openminded towards the West, which certainly would have served the country better than the xenophobia of the Xianfeng Emperor and his close advisors. Perhaps the Yuanmingyuan would still be standing today, for one thing. Anyway, thanks for the video, and I've subscribed. :-) Looking forward to watching more content!

"Chinese" Gordon is a very underappreciated figure. I have a biography of his somewhere in the house. He seems to have respected the Chinese but had a low opinion of the Emperor. He claimed that, when they were besieging the last major Taiping fortress, the Taiping leaders were offered amnesty if they surrendered. They did so and were massacred instead. Gordon was so disgusted by this that he refused the gifts the Emperor sent him.
