  • Stan as the voice of the rabbit - with Daws Butler, doing the rest. June Foray plays the woman - and the music is arranged by Billy May. And like that...

    Oddly, Stan came to mind out of no where in the past week, for no apparent reason. As has happened to me before, regarding other famous people. Imagine my shock when I searched for Stan and his Dragonet spoof which I remembered from my childhood. Only to find out that he had just recently died! Thanks Stan for the many laughs you gave us through the years!

    This never gets old. I LOVE IT! I love this cartoon. "I hear you were almost buried by the Ma'am, is that right dragon?" It cracks me up! And "You were right, I was right? Yeah it was a gun."

    According to official legend, when Freberg went to Jack Web for permission to use the Dragnet music in the record, Jack gave him both permission and the orchestra.
    Not being accustomed to working with Freberg and Daws, the orchestra had to record several takes when the trombone section kept missing their cues because they were laughing too hard.

    I want to throw an extra bone to whomever worked the visual pun into the opening sequence, as younger viewers would not be familiar with record needles, so it became embroidering a document record. Well done.

    Now THIS is entertainment!!! I first came across this sparkling gem of squeaky-clean humor while taking a flight from Halifax to my dad's home stomping ground of Alberta, around 1968. This was of course long before the daze of movies and TV channels or even screens for each passenger: instead we had a choice of music and comedy which was just fine and dandy, thank you. First time i heard it i nearly fell out of my seat laughing - good thing i was next to a window or i would have been literally rolling in the isles :-+}. Stan was a comedic genius on the order of Mel what's-his-name who did all the Bug's Bunny cartoon voices, and that patented dead-pan delivery made it all the more hilarious!! Goodness..... the memories.

    ... I've heard this routine tons of times, but didn't know there was animation to go with it.
    (As other people have commented, the dragon looks nothing like the knave described him, but I wonder if that's on purpose - In "Knights and Knaves" puzzles, knaves always lie. But that's *definitely* a mistake at the end, where the frog-announcer should be speaking the last part, not the knight)

    • @MisterKleenhead
      @MisterKleenhead  Před 10 lety +3

      P'raps this INSPIRED Nick! I know they made stop-motion cartoons of a NUMBER of Stan & co's pieces ("Banana Boat Song" is a good 'un) and they were made contemporaneously (that's a good word) or at least, shortly after the releases. But how much involvement Mr Freberg had I cannot say.
      Stan is still working, at 87. His wife died, after over 40 years of marriage (and two kids) when he was 73. So he remarried and THAT union is still going strong. The man is unstoppable!

  • @PhilBagels
    @PhilBagels Před 9 lety +6

    The dragon doesn't match the knave's description.
    IMO, the animation distracts from the humor. Why are they all animals? It would have been funnier to stick to the parody and have St. George look like Jack Webb, and closely emulate the Dragnet show as much as possible.

  • @sdovas
    @sdovas Před 9 lety +2

    Boy, this is TERRIBLE. If, as you say, this was done when the record came out, to accompany the record, I'm surprised and horrified Freberg was have let it pass muster. He'd worked with some of the greatest animation studios in the world and the track itself is so perfectly timed, so brilliantly performed, this clunky animation-- and all those awful takes to camera that the characters do --- is grossly out-of-step with the story of work Freberg expected of his collaborators. Then again, it could simply point up how even in those days record companies were cheap sh*t operations no matter who the artist was.

    • @MisterKleenhead
      @MisterKleenhead  Před 8 lety +4

      +sdovas Maybe Capitol Records authorised it and Stan had no say. I recall a similar animation for the Banana Boat Song...

    • @sdovas
      @sdovas Před 8 lety +4

      +MisterKleenhead ...such is the way the relation between artist and record company has always been.
      I recall the Banana Boat movie as being better than this, but then it HAS been a while. I'll have to look that one up too,albeit on am empty stomach.
