I'm a general dentist for over 40 years. I've probably performed about 3,000 root canal procedures. I'm thinking well under ten patients, maybe half of that had enough pain that they even mentioned pain at the next visit or called me right after the procedure. I've personally had root canals on 3 teeth, all molars which are a more complex root canal procedure. I never a second of pain during the procedure or afterwards. The success rate of root canal procedures is 97-99% which by any standard is excellent. My theory as to why root canals have such a bad reputation and are the go to subject of standup comedians is human nature which loves to give bad news and get you jacked up. If I perform 1,000 root canals and one person has a rough time I guarantee that you won't hear from the 999 telling you, "Let me tell you about the great pain free successful root canal I had." You'll only hear from the bad experience.
True ❤

Still scared about procedure regardless of uplifting comments but I just cannot wait to sleep soundly and eat without painful discomfort again!!
Seems like quarantine got the best of us
My dentist did give me the option to see an Endodontist, but he strongly recommended extraction. I had a huge cavity that formed inside my number 15 molar, which was damaged from bruxism. The structural integrity of the tooth was compromised. Not to mention, the tooth was severely infected. The pain ended up spreading to other teeth, into my brain and sinuses. It was the worst pain I've ever experienced. Sometimes, you don't have a choice to keep your tooth. With implants now being more financially accessible to everyone, a root canal is no longer the only option. Implants are a permanent solution and will probably last a lot longer than a root canal. In my opinion, once a tooth is structurally compromised, extraction is probably the best choice. Especially since a root canal weakens the structure of the tooth. Of course, everyones situation is different. I'm getting a root canal on my number 2 molar this Monday. Thankfully, that one can be saved.

@@ImPrismuh The root canal operation. I might need one soon.
I don’t know why people worry about possible pain with root canal treatment; the dentist numbs your tooth and the shot hardly hurts at all, I have just had it done and of course felt nothing throughout. You have to hold your mouth open for maybe 25-30 mins but it’s no big deal, you can relax a little bit now and then when he’s not working on you. I will go back later for the final filling but meanwhile, the small amount of after-op pain I had last night has now disappeared and I feel exhilarated to have had it fixed.
So what did you feel when they put in the liquids that clean the tooth?
Luis Díaz Nothing at all!
Luis Díaz you don’t feel anything throughout, you are numb.
So is the numb medicine stronger than the one they use to take out cavities?

I’m getting my procedure done in 10 min. I’ll come back with the feedback when it’s over
I went in at 10am and got done by 11:03am. First the dentist numbs you (I hated this part because I hate needles. You just feel a pinch along with pressure) once you get numbed the rest of the procedure was easy. ASK FOR THE DENTAL BLOCKERS!!! It’s a rubber block that helps keep your mouth open the entire time. That helped me a lot with my anxiety because I got to clench whenever I felt anxious
Update: the pain after the procedure is horrible!!! My head hurts, the area where the dentist was doing the root canal hurts. Jesus. Make sure you don’t have anything important to do after the procedure & have the day to rest.
Thanks for the update. How are you doing now?

Even the injection part where your dentist gives you numbing injection didn’t hurt at all.
My dentist was very gentle and amazing and did a great job. Depends on your dentist though. But experience wise it was really painless and easy.
It took about an hour for my procedure because my infection was bad but the only thing that did bother me was just keeping my mouth open for a while. Other than that there is no need to be scared of anything it’s really really easy.
Thank you so much for leaving this comment. I had a wisdom tooth out and even the numbing injections were almost painless. You're so right: it's all about the dentist's experience and knowledge. It felt uncomfortable and strange but not painful. I think it's mind over matter when you're in the dentist's chair: don't think about what's going on in your mouth, just think of other things. I'm still terrified about having RCT because I was told that when your tooth has already shown pain it can make the procedure painful. However, everybody I've spoken with who had a painful tooth complaint leading to RCT (including you) has said it was a painless procedure. I don't know what to believe but I know what I'm going to have to go with-- after all, I have no choice. Thanks again Eshaal!

A microscope will show you if the canals split. A regular dentist does not use a microscope and if you do a root canal with a regular dentist it wont work if the canals split. An Xray wont show if the canals split. If your canals split and you have a dentist do the root canal with out using a microscope, the Root canal will not be successful.

At least knowing it’s at least something they can do even if it might not be a common thing ? Idk and I’m not on any anxiety meds or any type of medication I have a history of addiction in my family and refuse to take them. So that’s not something that would help.
I have anxiety as well about going to the doctor or dentist but with the pain I’m in now I’m looking forward to going! I was awake for getting my wisdom teeth cut out and that was awful but this looks so much easier. Just lay back and try to relax. Take some sunglasses and earbuds. That always helps
i’m so bad with things in my mouth and gag easily so that plastic thing will be hell for me
Help my dudes, I’m gonna have to have 3 root canals in one sitting- god my teeth hurt man- I’m probably gonna need to get antibiotics it’s gotten rlly bad..also I have rlly bad pain as well, im always in pain man, I’m scared of the procedure but at the same time I just want to go through it because I hate this pain. Im scared of dentists as well, so this is relieving to me and PLEASE I NEED THE ROOT CANAL MAN
You don't feel the pain while doing the tooth 🦷 cannel if after omg 1week of pain
So after a week it won't hurt anymore? I just got mine done 5 days ago I still have pain
Ugh went to the dentist yesterday and he already pulled 3 molars and threatened to pull another if I don’t see one of these doctors
I woke up with biting pressure on my tooth and now I'm freaking out. I've never had a cavity so I don't know what this is.

@@rootcanalspecialists hello, I heared VERY BAD stuff about root canals,
Can they really cause health problems? Or only if went wrong?
Thank you
@@bosi292 We recommend visiting this page, which dispels common myths about root canal treatment: www.aae.org/patients/root-canal-treatment/myths-root-canals/ The fact is, misinformation you may find on the Internet or elsewhere, claiming that if you receive a root canal treatment you’re more likely to become ill or contract a disease in the future, simply isn’t true.
I just had a root canal earlier today. It doesn’t hurt at all. At first I was so nervous because I didn’t know what to expect. Watching lots of root canal videos that got me nervous.
Yes. It was on my #8 front tooth
I fear dentist too. I am from India. I had a wisdom tooth decay and infection from last ! may be 25 days. I did all sorts of home remedies. Got some relief but not completely. Took some antibiotics . Pain/swelling gone but I think infection is still there. RCT is very expensive. I am doing salt water rinse and its helping. Covid situation around. Tooth extraction. !????????
When possible, you should always choose to save your natural tooth over extraction. An endodontist -- root canal specialist -- can help. Visit findmyendodontist.com to see if any of our member endodontists practice in your area, and visit aae.org/patients to learn more about the benefits of root canal treatment.
If its wisdom teeth just get them pulled. Probably should have them removed anyway even if they weren't decayed. Antibiotics will clear it up but it will just keep coming back
Can anyone explain why dentists is the States appear to work in a large, open rooms with other dentists and patients? Can't they afford separate rooms? Do they share equipment? Or is it some sort of insurance against a patient making an accusation of inappropriate behaviour? What? I live in New Zealand and the only place you will ever see this is at the University Dental School.
I think this is some kind of institute or school. All the dentists I’ve ever been to in the US have separate rooms for each patient.
That is either a school or some sort of cheap or free clinic. I have literally never been anywhere like this but I know they exist. Normal offices are nothing like this. That is def a clinic or school. I have never been to a dentist or specialist where I didn't have my own room ever
Scheduled to have one tomorrow Hoping for an uneventful procedure🤞

I feel the same as you. I keep reading that if you've already presented/had pain on the tooth which you're having RCT on then it CAN be painful and hard to numb the area. I'm terrified. I wish I could be put to sleep for all dental work.

honey, I went today and my dentist said I don't need RCT so he only did the feeling but I just wanna say to you please choose a reputed doctor for a root canal and sweetheart don't worry after giving anaesthesia you are not going to feel a thing but please go to a root canal specialist and be positive⭐⭐❤
@@rewanaveen4149 Thanks Rewa, you're a sweetheart. So pleased to hear that you don't actually need RCT. What a relief that must have been, not just in terms of fear but financially as well. 😌
i woke up this morning with two excruciating toothaches (the pain is only present when biting down, chewing, or having cold on that side of my mouth) im going to the dentist tomorrow. i rly hope its not going to require root canals because the last time i got a cavity filled, my mouth was very resistant to the numbing solution so i could feel the drill every few minutes until they gave me about five shots to the gums. if i need a root canal, im afraid they wont give me enough again but this time itll hurt more. or maybe i’ll just pass out from the pain and everything will be alright lol
man im going for the root canal in 1 hr and 30 mins im nervous
when i come back ill tell u how it felt XD
I feel you girl, finally someone I can relate too. I’m pretty sure the dentist is tired of seeing me.
it was the easiest thing ever tbh

200$ for mine tomorrow
I get mines next week I’m so scared 😭😭I want to know if you feel the pain during the surgery 🥺
no it is a painless procedure, the only thing that you will feel is when they inject the anesthesia, but after 2 minutes it is all smooth sailing. you won’t even know they did it bc you can’t feel a thing!

@@natoshawilliams5869 I was the same but it’s not bad at all, just bring some Bluetooth headphones and just focus on the music, the dentist will get it done in no time at all. It is a lot better than getting a rotten tooth having to get it pulled. The pain level at max will be a 1-2 if any. And if you feel uncomfortable just relax and remember that people who do the procedure do it 30-40 times a week and have had decades of experience on top of 3 years extra of dental school.
It really hurttt!!!! Just because I didn’t let the dentist to give me a pain killer injection

I had my first root canal treatment last year (premolar tooth) and it took 3 sessions almost an hour each session and it was almost painless. The only inconvenience for me was keeping my mouth open for at least an hour or so. But this year September I had another one (2nd molar) and I suddenly developed an anxiety with it. I almost panic during the first session, but I went through to the 2nd session until I jiat decided to have the tooth extracted cause of my anxiety and it was a big mistake!!! I still regret it until now. I'll have another root canal next week (premolar) on the otjer side. And I'm preparing myself, I'm avoiding the fearful thoihhts etc. I don't want to make the same mistake. I'm trying not to think about the procedure. BTW, it's the gagging and fear of swallowing that was making me anxious last September and I hope I got over with it. Wish me luck! 😎
Hope you did well! 💞
