We Are The Champions - by Freddie Mercury
John Deacon: Bass
Brian May: Backing vocals and electric guitar
Freddie Mercury: Piano, lead and backing vocals
Roger Taylor: Backing vocals and drums
One of Freddies greatest vocals. The parts where he is Matching the lead licks by Brian.Really great song,if overplayed to death. Its Fred on the piano btw
The press thought it was an arrogant song. But the song was not only for Queen who overcame, but a song for all of us who don't give up and keep moving forward. We will rock you is about a kid's life, then he is a young man, then a old man and all his life society keeps knocking him down though all through his life he tries to make a difference. Great reaction
I think it's this song that secures Queen's immortality more than others. In 100 years, people will still be singing this the way we sing happy birthday today. We all know the words, but not necessarily the origin.
Freddie accomplished two things with this song: thumbing his nose at the press, and getting the crowd to participate. It wasn't planned as a sport anthem, for as Brian said, "In a rock concert everybody's on the same side".
AMEN 🥰✌🏼
John Deacon and the piano- yep. Brian made comment in interview on how, in concert, John's eyes were glued to Freddie's hands on the keyboard.
Queen fans we were in awe when the album came out. The two anthems opening it are eternal!
Once again: iconic and legendary song
I was there. Each to their own.
But I felt it brought Queen up to a totally new level of songwriting and craft. More simplified, less chaotic and cluttered than the brilliant stuff that went before.
For me, it was a magical experience to hear WWRY and WATC for the first time. Everything became clearer and more clinical in my opinion. But still with the flamboyance and calibre of what got them to this point
It was spiritual, Queen fans love them BECAUSE they changed and adapted. Here's the set list from the show I saw in 1981: Setlist

Queen is The Champion, my frieeennnddd……..
To think there are actually people on this planet that know the song, but not who wrote/performed it.
'News Of The World', and the follow-up, 'Jazz', were the 2 albums that I properly got into Queen, from a listener point of view. I wasn't old enough to be in a position to be able to zone into the earlier albums at the time of their release, due to my age. It wasn't until, 'We Are The Champions', and, 'We Will Rock You', came along that I was awakening to my sense of taste when it came to music. And, I was lucky enough to have older brothers at the time who had the resources to be able to buy the albums. I would often, 'overhear', these 2 particular albums, due to sharing the same bedroom for a number of years, and got to know them quite well.
Years later, once I'd become able to buy my own copies, it was a bit of a nostalgia fest, but also a form of enlightenment due to being old enough by then to grasp what the songs were actually about, and it was like listening to them again for the first time. The '77 and '78 period was an interesting time for me to be growing up, and the music on these 2 albums will always be intrinsically linked to what was going on, for me. There's a fair bit of sadness as well as happiness associated with it, but I'm mature enough to be able to compartmentalise it all and take the rough with the smooth. Whenever I listen to them now, I get the odd glimpse of a memory or feeling and it warms my soul.
For me it was hearing Bohemian Rhapsody on TOTP that xmas of 1975... but yeah up to and including Jazz I absolutely loved Queen... when the Game came along it really dropped off and I still recall that moment of disappointment listening to that particular album... they got really popular but something was missing from that magical 1974-78 period.... I think they had to change with the times...
I was quite a big Queen fan when this record came out, and to be honest, I was a bit disappointed when it came out. My expectations were really high and I felt that they have left their unique style and become a just a little more 'ordinary'.
I was expecting more of the Queen music I knew and loved and wasn't really ready for them to change. Today I think it is a really great album, one of their best actually. They have made so much great music over the years, it's really outstanding.
I still have a soft spot for their early records though, because those were the records that really effected me in my teenage years.
thanks again, Justin.. We will Rock you leads directly into this one... mostly they are played together...they were both designed for audience participation...and are, of course, commonly played at sporting events lol.. appreciate your reaction!
First got into Queen when Sheer Heart Attack came out. Every album was so varied that I never knew what to expect and so was never phased by anything they did until Hot Space. I was very used to 'different' from Queen. Just took each record as it came and loved each one for it's variety and excellence
Johns bass shines here❤❤❤Love this song so much❤❤❤Thanks for the great reaction ❤❤❤
It's important to note that "News Of The World" wasn't Queen's "answer" to punk rock, they just acknowledged that maybe people weren't into massively over produced albums any more so they decided to make a more raw album with less vocal, guitar, etc overdubs. This could be my favourite Queen album, it has a lot of attitude. My favourite track on here is actually Fight From The Inside. Fun fact: this is Slash's and Myles Kennedy's favourite Queen album.
It was also Kurt Cobain's favorite Queen album.
Great reaction! We Are The Champions is actually a very complex song, people just don't realize it because it is very catchy. The song has 23 different chords, key changes and modal mixture. Just before the first chorus for example, the song goes out of key, and jumps up a full octave. At the end the song also never resolves, but when performed live it did resolve.
I remember when this song came out. (barely) It was an instant classic. You instantly thought it had been out forever already. Didn't need to get used to it. And of course they played it on the radio every hour.
I remember in 1977/1978 watching a football (UK football that is ;-) ) match on TV and the crowd started singing "We are The Champions"... it was kinda spinetingling as I'd not heard a football crowd chant songs that were in the charts.
Beautifully crafted song in 6/8 time... Freddie's piano language is all there to be heard... C minor just like a lot of his stuff (Take My Breath Away, Lap of The Gods to name 2 examples) ... and that F#dim7 again (which is in both the previous songs).... How can a song be so part of our everyday lives yet still be llistenable/enjoyable?
Great song. The bass, piano, guitar and vocals all perform a perfect dance punctuated by Roger's drumming. So nice.
I love that your cat is knocking around her little ball with the bell. My cats have those and love them but kick them under things and they stay there until I vacuum and find them. Both this and We Will Rock You are iconic and probably immortal anthems. Freddie said that at all times when performing, he needed to know where the bass was because that is what kept him in time with what the rest of the band was doing. So for anyone who may think that bass is just the quiet guy in the corner, in fact the bass in many if not all early rock bands was the kingpin because there were no earpieces or other means of knowing what was going on or even being able to hear correctly. Thank you for your reaction.
My earliest memory of this song is around '79 playing sports with friends in the neighborhood and we'd sing it if we won, made the others so mad lol
Hi Justin ,I had the pleasure to see Queen live from 1977 to 1984 in England, in the 70s and 80s I saw various band ,Sabbath, Deep Purple ,Europe etc I can honestly say that playing Live Queen was the best ,such a talented bunch of guys nobody came close to there act ,you came away from there concerts feeling totally blown away .
Sheer heart attack was the first Queen album I bought new, then the others up to Jazz. At that time we listened these records over and over again like 2 or 3 or more times. The production on their albums back then was so high quality compared to others. Just you listened the sounds and instrumentation with awe 😂.
It's late and Spread your wings are probably my favs from this album.
My brother signed up for Columbia House in '77 - where you "join" and get 12 albums for 1 cent (or 99 cents or whatever it was). This (and 2112) were two of the 12 he picked. It was the first Queen album (8-track) I had ever heard, though not the first Queen song because Bohemian Rhapsody was out there and unmissable. I love almost everything on this one, but the first two were really the stand-outs. On the 8-track they were almost one song since there was no pause between them. As such, I always knew they were two songs, but I viewed them as one.
This is my favourite song of the world
The first two tracks of the album are like the starting pistol of modern stadium rock. Awesome. You can't make songs that sound more like hits.
1977 is the year Roger Taylor released his first solo single, thus the first member of Queen do do a solo work* (Larry Lurex could be considered the first though).
He had 4 songs in 1977, I Wanna Testify, Sheer Heart Attack, Fight From The Inside and Turn On The TV.
I Wanna Testify is the only one that was credited to Roger and other 2 guys. In fact this song already existed and Roger wanted to cover it, but he ended up changing the whole song to a point it's difficult to say it's the same song.
It's a strong song, but the fact that other people were credited might have made it impossible to be accepted in the album.
So Sheer Heart Attack and Fight From The Inside were the chosen ones, whereas I Wanna Testify was the A-side of Roger's single and Turn On The TV the B-side.
Roger played all the instruments and did all the vocals in his first record.
I Wanna Testify is a cover of George Clinton's song and his band then The Parliaments. Released originally in 1967.
@@peaceofiona9198 No, it was written by Grorge Clinton and Daron Taylor.
And of course, Roger's modified version has credits to Roger too.
That guitar tone OMG
Some songs are eternal, this one is for sure. Like you said, awesome!
Mercury was very clever, for the two lines at the end of the chorus ('We Are The Champions, We Are The Champions...no time for losers cause We Are The Champions'), he used an old melody/chant everyone used as a kid (at least in the UK/Ireland) when making fun of anyone who failed, there were no words, just Na na - na na na with the same melody.
Did you guys do this in the states as kids?
yes I know the little melody you are talking about

Well first off re: your effing cat… mine got the zoomies twice last night back and forth across my body … anyone surviving a cat is a Champion and then there’s the song… I used to think it was a fun stadium song but now I realize what a beautiful well crafted iconic song it truly is. Usually a background song but when I actually listen to it I feel rather emotional partly for me and partly for the human race ( go ahead and laugh 😂 ) Freddie was born an awesome composer. He had a great voice and he was a fantastic entertainer but his greatest gift was his songwriting. Sad that he couldn’t stay with us longer.
My cat greeted me at 2AM by climbing up the built-in bookcases and batting down an 80 year old figurine.
Agreed 100%. Freddie was an extraordinary songwriter but people often just focus on his other skills.
You know that I think this is the first time I’ve ever heard the album version from beginning to end so thank you for that it’s so different to hear it that way. I mean of course I’ve heard this throughout my life at different events and have seen the live performances on video with Freddie performing live. But this had a different feeling to me. Love the message also.
I was in the fan club at the time, and I did receive an invite to the recording of the video, but I could not make it down to London.
This was the album where Freddie Mercury started to sing lead vocal on Roger Taylor's tracks! Freddie sings on Sheer Heart Attack. I think you might hear your first Taylor track that you will actually like. I dont know. Up to you. Roger still sings on Fight From the Inside though! :D
This album was a big change. I look forward to your feelings on the songs to come. We Will Rock You/We Are the Champions are obviously classic!
Love this album! If you say,”It’s okay” to It’s late or spread your wings then I’ll think I’ll cry😅
Get the kleenex ready!
I think you'll like "Sheer Heart Attack"!
Queen proved less is more. This period of queen is different for me, at the time I was full bore into Rush, Thin Lizzy, UFO etc. Queen were always there in late 70s uk, I guess it wasn't until live aid I got back into their amazingness (is that a word) 😅😅😅😅🤘😎🤘
Saw Queen mid 70s when Seven Seas Of Rhye was in the charts. Bought every album from the first until this one and it was the last.. Found it too commercial for my taste.Funnily enough I liked Sheer Heart Attack on it as quite rocky. And yet could only listen to Nightwish after Floor joined as disliked earlier singers. Just an old rocker I guess.
New info for me ... song was written in '75. Hmmmm. Freddie (they) waited til it felt right, I guess. So, patience is a virtue - couldn't be more perfect teamed with We Will Rock You.
For me this was the last pf the really "true" Queen albums until The Works album in 1984. Maybe because of the fact that I remember as a 14 year old hearing Queen I for the first time and loving it that I much prefer the earlier Queen albums. Having said that
The Inuendo album is awesome!
In the Lap of the Gods(revisited...) really revisited
Few punk bands have the technical chops to pull off Sheer Heart Attack. Melodic thrash metal might be a better description. It's a shame you'll be pausing because the smash-cut from track 3 to 4 is beautiful.
As you will see from now on, Roger is the member most prone to new musical styles.
The chord progression is bonkers
Your opinion of the next song should prove interesting 😮
Justin I love that you separated the two songs we will rock you/we are the champions because I love both songs but I’m tired of hearing the songs always together in a package. People can love or hate the song Jump by Van Halen I like hearing the song 1984/Jump together because when the album 1984 came I heard the album that way with the songs back to back similarly the way these 2 Queen songs are played together if that makes any sense. Cheers.
I remember the first time I heard this song. It played at the end of Revenge of the Nerds. Half way through the song, it switched to an orchestra version of the song which kind of ruined it.
Simple but oh so effective key modulations. Love those changes at the end of the chorus. I was 13 years old when this came out. My memory is that, while Queen's place in the pop-rock world was respected up til then, these songs elevated them to an entirely new level. Sort of like what happened with Fleetwood Mac with their 1975 eponymous album. Elton John and David Bowie levels of stardom. That said, there was also a sense that Queen were 'dumbing down' their approach a bit, but not so much that they were a different group. I will admit I lost interest after this one.
At first I was disappointed at the new, stripped down approach. I quickly learned to appreciate the new songs - including Roger and John's greater writing involvement.
News of the World, albeit different and rawer than the two predecessors, still had that 70s Queen conceptual integrity: the album as a whole was greater than the sum of its individual parts. I didn't react negatively to it when it came out. Also liked Jazz which pushed the bounderies even further. It all started to change with the Game...and Hot Space is just awful!
It's a horrible thing to say it, but I think the freedom that Freddie achieved having come to terms with his own sexuality in the late 70's and early 80's, did lead to the music becoming a little less, let's say, 'conventional', for what was up until then, what was considered a rock band. However, in retrospect, and understanding what was going on, it's a phase I think Freddie and the band as a whole had to go through in order to accept who they really were. I couldn't stand, 'Hot Space', when it came out, and apart from the single, 'Las Parablas De Amor', paid very little attention to it. In later years, though, I learned to appreciate it more and understand how and why it came into being. The songs are what you expect from that perspective rather than the, 'WTF?', of listening to it back in '82, and wondering what was going on.
