Rabaul Town Pre Eruption

  • Rabaul town was considered the most beautiful town in Papua New Guinea and also the 'Pearl of the South Pacific' until 1994 when it was destroyed by the twin volcanic eruptions of Mt. Tavurvur and Vulcan. Even though Rabaul town is gone, it will always be in the heart of people who had lived there. It is slowly rising up from the ashes and is still maintaining its natural beauty.
The pictures in this short video is taken from John B. Dikaung's Photo Album and the Facebook group 'Swit Rabaul'.

Thanks Sebastian Robin for the memories.
I worked there in 1969 for Jennings plumbing, Paul & Sproule and finally Public works.
Nowhere else in PNG had such collective beauty like this town, it didn't matter from which direction you viewed it, there was beauty every where. It amazed me when I first saw it and when I left, I felt I was leaving home.

I was born in Rabaul and grew up there. Went to primary and secondary school then went to University in Lae. On completion of my studies I joined Works as a trainee engineer. Met a young girl from the PNGBC bank former Combank. We enjoy the company of European, Chinese and mixed race people. Sure Rabaul had everything a town had. It was peaceful and orderly. Yes it was the pearl of the Pacific. Love Rabaul

The bung the friendly, happy people wanders down Mango Ave. Sitting on the grass overlooking the beach. So much exploring the tunnels . I could go on forever. My father was the first civilian patrol officer appointed after the war and his first posting was to Rabaul where I was born. There were other Patrol Officers (such as Jack Read) but they were ex-army. We originally lived on the flats and there were only 6 houses. Later we moved to Namanula.
I can remember the Japanese destroyers and other Naval ships which were rammed up on the beach before they came back and floated them away.
I was there when the first eruption occurred and my father and a number of other administrators begged the Govt to move the town.
Commercialism was so powerful that when BP said they were not going to rebuild their warehouses and wharves, the Govt caved in.
We were evacuated out to sea whilst the eruption occurred.
I have always considered myself Tolai even though I am white. It was my first language.
I might have to disagree with the assumption that Rabaul is the most beautiful town in New Guinea...I would give that vote to Madang.

Where in Namanula did you live coz I lived there in 92' in this old german house built on a nice hill right under the enourmous mother mountain.. I will push back on madang though, the volcanics of new britain is special.
