  • Jerry Portnoy was born in 1943 and grew up in the blues-drenched atmosphere of Chicago's famous Maxwell Street Market during the golden age of Chicago Blues. He began his professional career in the late 60's and since that time has performed, live and on television, to more people in more places than any other blues harmonica player. As well as touring with the Legendary Blues Band and his own band, The Streamliners, Jerry has had the singular honor of working for many years with the two biggest names in blues - Muddy Waters and Eric Clapton - and is regarded as one of the finest exponents of the Chicago blues harmonica tradition performing today. His constant touring schedule has carried him to 26 countries on five continents, with performaces at the White House, Carnegie Hall, Radio City Music Hall, the Smithsonian, London's Royal Albert Hall, and at major jazz festivals worldwide, including Newport and Montreux, as well as playing on several Grammy award winning albums.

Jerry is a very nice guy. I took a number of lessons from him over a years time as a beginner when he lived back in Waltham MA. He was a patient and encouraging teacher. Sometimes I would pay for a half hour lesson and it would turn into an hour and half spinning old blues records and together enjoying and learning from to the original Masters. He loves the music so much. His tone is like no one else. Jerry is one of a kind.

Funny, I ended up playing harmonica too and I could just see myself when he describes what got him putting his hands onto it. Exactly the same for me. My fingers are too stiff for guitar, piano or accordion and they required too much coordination for me but it felt just right as soon as I got hold of a harmonica. I smoked and bit my finger nails and still do....

Compared to now this guy is no master that is a joke. There are quite a few harmonica players on CZcams you can find in no time flat that are a million miles above this guys ability. It is very basic stuff and it has all been done like this. There is a session with Muddy Waters on CZcams where this Guy tries to pull the figure back in at the wrong time as if he was band leader. You could hear what was happening without even looking at Muddy. Just cause you played with some names means nothing.
