My personal lineup involves Guy as controlled, Jade as a mage, and Natalia as healer/attacker, and Tear as a healer
Tales of the abyss needs a remake. It's such a good game with a great story.
I'd make changes to Luke's kit where he could use those spells asch can use as a post game thing and guardian field heals better like Alvin in xillia.
Probably add some close range attack moves for tear and Natalia in case enemies get too close. Guy probably reverse and add a range move. Anise probably a whole revamp.
remake? We need atleast a port... damn thing still stuck in PS2 and 3DS jail.
Atleast make them playable on the modern consoles or steam. Doesn't even need to be a remaster, just port the damn thing. T_T
But first Destiny 1 Eternia and Rebirth need ports/remasters in English on the PS4 PS5 Switch and in the case of Eternia the PROPER names of skills ie Demon Fang NOT SONIC blade for Reid for a Eternia port.

I agree with this guy on most lists but this one isnt completely fair. Luke being the worst is true. But Guy however has some of the best combos in the game by a mile, as an AI tho he's terrible.

Yea I played through Abyss with my wife last year and I used Guy almost exclusively while she was Luke. Luke is disgustingly good when controlled, but just runs back and forth as an AI
Tales lists are always a welcome treat for me. And they always make me think some day we'll get ones for Berseria, the Xillia games, and Graces F, haha.

Abyss is one of my first Tales games, and I think it has very good story. Nice list, I almost never use Anise 😂

Ive finished this game 3 times and it was on my 3rd playthrough that I noticed Natalia's damage was pretty high. She starts out very lackluster in heals and damage so I usually used her the least. But once you unlock some of the passive combo skills she becomes a good long range combo dealer.

I'm surprised you placed guy so low, he is AMAZING! I use him most of the time if I'm not using Tear or Natalia he is my good to go, loved all his combo he pretty much has an infinite with tempest, My team at the end was: Guy, Tear, Natalia, Jade/Alise (depends on the enemy weakness but I used Jade more he is hilarious!).
It’s funny that Luke was able to change from an asshole to a hero, but his combat and gameplay didn’t change at all.
Entertaining list! I never used Natalia so i didnt know she was that good! I agree with Tear as the MVP since even the AI isnt bad. I usually played as Guy so I didnt know that his AI was that horrible haha
Honestly, I would’ve put Van and Ion in shit tier and then bumped Asch above Luke in low due to it being possible to glitch him into a permanent party role and actually swap his equipment out. Van for doing literally nothing and Ion for being a short-lived assist, the game counts them on the party so they may as well qualify for the list.

Spellcaster in Tales series are different breeds. Characters like Tear, Jade, Anise are already beast. Then came in Rita from Vesperia who blew ALL MAGES OF JRPG OUTTA THE WATER.

Best guess a split between best as a npc and best as a useable unit we see tear and Natalia top tier as support same with jade. While Luke is better as a main as his combos can juggle opponents if you do it well.
Anise probably mid to bottom as she is never that useful and only good to fill up the monster index while guy is very fast
Asch is basically same as Luke aside the fact he can actually use spells which could make him a good support as well like a faster jade if the game let us use him more.

Luke and Anise are capable of self-healing with the right FSC while using Steel and Mighty Charge respectively (also Natalia's Cavalry, but she's a healer either way).
Those second MA are only available for Luke and Guy, if you have the Key of Lorelei (the complete version) and Jewel of Gardios equipped... so just endgame MA.
I agree with your tier list, but I feel every character are good if you know how to use them

I always found that Tear would heal herself instead of others. I actually preferred to have Guy, Luke, Anise, and Natalia. I haven’t played in forever but I just remember Tear practically letting me and my friends die so I ended up preferring items over spells.

This is the best tales game in the franchise. Yes the combat system is a bit dated compared to later entries into the series but the story and character development is executed almost to perfection.

IMHO, Luke is the best protagonist in the series. He has the best character development
Natalia should be lower since she only has a single arte that can generate a FOF.
What Anise lacks in stats she makes up for in being able to create light and dark FOFs that benifit Tear and Jade heavily.
Also like Anise, Guy should be bumped up because how broken free run is...and he's the fastest character plus center an accessory than can regenerate TP the skill floor with having him solo the game is much lower than everyone else. Also Cresent Strike gaurd breaks so consistently, severing wind creates a wind FOF and can FOF chain into inself...but most importantly you can quickly create a wind FOF to turn Tear's Healing Circle into a Fairy Circle.
There is a real glich in the ps2 that let you keep asch
Okay I'm gonna be super biased here this game holds a special place in my heart because I remembered as a kid when I came across this game from a review from years ago that gave it a 3 out of 5, I said to myself there's no way this game is that mediocre so I asked my cousin well not really asked but more like I saw the game at a gamestop and said to myself I wonder how good it would be if I had this at Christmas time........ My cousin straight up got me the game for Christmas at that point and I played the s*** out of it. So much so that it's probably the one game in the series that I know the most about except for side content where I have to do a whole bunch of multiple times since this was before the later games were they implemented the better new game plus features. That being said your list makes perfect sense and I say this as someone who's played this game way too many times and I had a feeling Tear would be the God tier despite the fact that she calls Luke an idiot like 500 times but at least Abyss is the only tales game to have an anime that lasted longer than 12 episodes, add some things that was from the game but expanded upon and it gave us tear being more of a cute dork. What I'm saying is this was a very very good solid list and it needs to be said this game needs to be re-released on other platforms I'm still mad that it was only available on the PS2 and when it did get released it was reduced to the 3DS like come on Namco.

And I'm just like, Okay, so, this is some of the best character writing in any video game ever, period. And you LIKE character writing; it's why you made ME watch Mad Men. So, if this caliber of work puts you to sleep, how do you stay awake while you play anything else? (And the answer is that she plays gameplay-driven titles like Hades. Which, to be sure, is a great game! But it's no Tales of the Abyss.)

TALES OF JUMPSCARE
Guy is the best character in the game. You could beat unknown mode solo guy so no idea how he is so low given his absurd arte choices and stagger. Abyss definitely is not one of the most balanced cast and you either love Luke or hate him. Its a shame you can't get his outfit he gets with the scarf after beating teh game as a postgame reward and how bad luke is compared to everyone else. Also a shame how there is like 15 tales games either not localized or inaccessible to the western audeince and eastern because of being locked on older consoles like Graces F and the Xillia games. I don't know how you are rating characters in these games like this series but given how in Tales of you can pretty much combo bosses to death if you get good enough and learn them as well as fighting game mechanics being used in the series to a small extent i don't think range matters much at all and the big defining factors in tiering is utility and strength basically how good they do their roles. I wish they made luke an aerial fighter though cause he feels like he was supposed to be more aerial based but then they scrapped the idea and patched him up giving him one of the most broken artes in the series lightspear cannon which can carry anyone that gets access to it not to mention making him an aerial fighter would be a better contrast to Asch's style and give Luke his own niche as well as make him feel different from Asch instead of being a worse Asch. Even in the intro luke is attacking asch from the air and running on walls and none of that was really translated into luke's gameply. I wish they dabbled in aerial fighters more throughout the series cause when the series does use aerial fighters its a fun alternate playstyle that adds variety. The ones that come to mind that were really great aerial fighters for me are Judith from Vesperia and Emile from symphonia 2 the unfortunate thing for Emile is the battle cam was awful in dawn of the new world so his aerial combos had to pretty much be done blind.
Sorry but Luke > guy because he have fire, wind, and earth elemental attack. Using golder orb? On your skill, you can chain his skill into better elemental one

Abyss is somewhat the opposite of Arise. Abyss: Great story, mid gameplay = Arise: Great gameplay, mid story. Too bad Bandai Namco is so stingy when it comes to Tales. Otherwise, we'd have a remaster that would improve on Abyss gameplay.
Tales of the abyss is so divisive. You either really like Luke as a character, or absolutely hate him. I ditched him and used Guy because I couldnt stand him story wise, and is the only game I can think of where I dropped the MC of an RPG from my party completely.
Like its hard to rate a game highly when the MC who the story completely revolves around is the so polarizing. The rest of the cast is good to excellent and also the opening is an absolute banger.

Guy is actually one of the best characters if you know what you're doing, since he can combo infinitely around the mid-game. I would place him over Jade.
Asch also has infinite combos from the beginning since you can cancel his spells. And you can get Asch forever through a glitch but sadly you can't change his equipment.
TBH I never compared damage values between characters. It's almost impossible in this game anyway bc you always want to be passing around the optimal CC cores every time someone levels up and you're going to mess up somewhere, especially with your 2 benchwarmers. I'm half-expecting there to be something I never realized, like "actually Tear/Anise are better at spamming spell damage than Jade lol".

For me Guy NOT Luke is the best one to control even at lv 200 on Normal mode and Natalia is pure CRAP.

Judith was good just she wasn't available till act 3 with her full kit. I have no idea why they made aerial artes 2 available so late into the game. She gets the other stuff she needs during act 2 and once she has her kit and before she has an arte and infinite and this arte does 7k damage when everyone else will only be doing 1k with their arte if you level up this arte which was lunar rise which is learned before the weird mantaray boss fight so Judith was actually insanely broken but you had to actually be good or use her or you could abuse her aerial damage skill overlimit and spam lunar rise for disgusting damage untill you get to act 3 and get aerial artes 2. Flynn is the one that get the short end of the stick here not Judith. Flynn is a worse estelle and he has no way to continue combos outside of overlimit since he has a lot of synergy issues and some of his arte hitboxes are really small and weirdly done. Not to mention Flynn doesn't get access to a lot of the good damage skills like yuri, karol, even Patty and Raven do. Flynn is by no means bad but he is definitely the worst in Vesperia.

Her single target heals are better and she casts faster than Tear. Make her your healer, use Tear as your DPS caster and you’ve got a winning team
All I needed to see was Asch being the lowest for a illogical reason. Guy and Luke being low just made it worse.

So tired of all those overrated tales games stealing the spotlight from the true best in the series, Tales of Graces.
