  • @SketchyMagpie

I think it was deliberate that the scenes on Red Dwarf had less music and seemed so quiet/dead because it’s supposed to be a bleak situation (referring to Lister’s comments in this episode about “being dead for years”) so I think they held back the music so that Earth would seem more vibrant and full of life in comparison…. Like in the Wizard of Oz when it suddenly goes colour!

Feels like Craig and Lister blur in this story. Craig really was a drug-drink-sex addict and had had some (very) public meltdowns by the time this was made. It was courageous of him to address them in this story. The way he faces his demons head on and states his strengths (via Lister) in trying to face them ("I can be quite brave") always gets me😪

watching it back to back certainly gives a bit of whiplash for your first time, this was seen as almost a soft reset for this 3 parter, it was essentially kind of a screen test to see if there was still an audience before commissioning a new series.
the show has matured both with its actors/writers and its audience over its long history which gives it many different styles and tastes over the years and as you've found ask two fans which series they prefer and you will get two different answers and quickly an argument :)

The Rachel/Deckard scene is a noir twisted moment because Rachel doesn't understand what she id feeling, whether it is her genuine feeling for Deckard or if she is acting out how she is programmed to react. Deckard is pushing her to get to stop second and third guessing herself but it is also highly abusive. However you cut it, it is a deeply problematic moment but also fitting for the noir vibe of the film. Deckard is pushing Rachel to trust her humanity but is doing it by treating her like a thing. It is ironic, he wants Rachel to believe in her humanity but he is doing it by treating her like a thing. It is a powerful scene which I always felt was meant to feel deeply uncomfortable because we are asked to acknowledge Rachel's agency. It shouldn't matter why she says no but that agency is ignored. Of course, Deckard is a slave catcher while Roy is a slave trying to stay alive. Deckard really isn't the good guy in this film. That's noir. It is a scene that can reveal a lot about your friends by the way they react to it. A disturbing number have found it hot and sexy.

Blackadder part 1 they were going for a costume drama feel and it has location filming (they joke one costume prop cost more to produce than the actor wearing it was paid), they had their budget drastically cut for season 2 (as season 1 didnt do well in viewer ratings) which forced them to make it a soundstage sitcom, but the viewers loved it.

Series 9 is one of those that you really need to watch all 3 parts together in one session for it all to make sense. It's more of a 3 part mini-movie than an actual real season of episodes.
It went a little too hard on the Bladerunner parody meta stuff imho. A little was cute, but they went for way too much of it imho because, like you two said, they didn't dig into the potential of the "unseen" Series 9 in the "real world".
I like how it ended in a way that felt Red Dwarf. And I'm happy to see you all are through 9 and are ready to get back to some proper style Red Dwarf content with Series X and beyond.

I'm glad you enjoyed parts 2 and 3! You probably enjoyed them more than I did at the time. Part of that was because I was thinking "Is this what Red Dwarf *is* now?!". I was oblivious to all the Blade Runner references and I had no idea there would be more 'conventional' seasons afterwards. But anyway, I really enjoyed your reactions to these, and I think I've warmed to the specials quite a lot myself.

The Starbug car continues a long tradition of custom cars being used in TV. Jon Pertwee, the third Doctor in Doctor Who, famously had a vehicle built which was named the Whomobile; what on screen was presented as a cross between a flying saucer and a hovercraft, though the thing actually ran on the road in the normal way. He was even able to convince the Beeb to include it in the show, being used most in his last story, Planet of the Spiders.

Originally Back to Earth was only going to be a two parter and would have ended at the "it's a 3(2)parter" moment but the show was Originally on BBC with no ads, but it was aired on Dave with ads so they either had to cut parts out or extend it to fit it into the time slots on Dave. (Thankfully Dave managed to accommodate the usual run time from series X onwards)
To explain what I mentioned last week, Dave kind of spoiled the "Despair" squid ending, after each part aired on Dave they aired 3 "classic" episodes after the episode. The first episode after Back To Eath part 3 was Back to Reality 😂
