MIM Strat Reboot - Part #1. - bye bye bye gloopy glitter. The end of an error

  • I attempted a glitter job on my MIM Strat half a decade ago, i've never been very happy with the results despite it looking good from across the room. I have a bunch of strat parts to upgrade it so I thought this would be a good opportunity to reboot the whole dang thing.

    I'm currently turning a left hand lp copy into a right hander. So far I've stripped the electrics, cut out a 'matching' horn. I have also blocked off the bridge holes for a bigsby and the tone and volume pots as I am bypassing them altogether. I had just started hand sanding the black to take it back to wood and realised what a ball ache it was going to be, so I stopped for a coffee to steel myself. That's when I saw you'd posted a new one and gave it a view. I am really happy that I did, once the shops go back to normal I'm hiring a heat gun.
    Cheers pal, 😎🎙🎸✅

    If you're planning on going experimental, I could imagine that looking great with even more/deeper gashes filled with a mixture of resin and copper-colored paint, then a simple oil rub clear finish and some kind of coppery or synthetic shell pickguard to match the copper colored bands and veins.

    I did my bass decades ago, stripped, sanded, with "Black Oak" wood stain and about three coats of button polish, which dries in minutes! Lasted extremely well and the wear from years of playing looks really nice :)

    That looks good for a home DIY job Ry. " Hey can we send you some pick ups? " Like you're gonna say " No ". "Send em on man! Send me every thing you have." I have an old Squire Strat that I cut a chunk out of behind the bridge. Just like a sort of semicircle.It no longer needs a stand now as its stands up on its own against the wall. Never falls over. It has a cut out like the old fender swingers. Its battered to bits! Stripped of paint & needs putting back together Gouged to hell! Its got battlescars. Looks cool as hell though. Might stain it with a see through red? Match the headstock too. Humbucker in the bridge. Kill switch. Good stuff.

    Awesome. I picked up a '00 MIM strat a week ago. Before we were all confined to our homes. It was already stripped, but the guy who did it used a bit too much heat on the back, and a 1" round section of the veneer pulled away. I have to repair that first. Not sure exactly what I'm going to do with it... looking forward to seeing what you do.

    • @dasdaro
      @dasdaro Před 4 lety

      Dom Koyuki if you are painting with Nitrocellulose Go slow. If you have any drips or runs don’t try to get them out right away. Use a 3M tack cloth not a cheap one. Use micro mesh pads to do your final sand before you buff. Use Maguires 205 buffing compound or your final buff if you do it by hand it takes longer but it will look professional.

    • @dasdaro
      @dasdaro Před 4 lety

      Dom Koyuki The final sand comes at the very end after all the spraying is done.2k is different and nitro lacquer that’s what I spray with. With 2K you should sand in between coats just make sure you clean your guitar thoroughly before spraying the next coat.

    What would be the best way about getting a glittery finish like the other guitar you'd shown in this video? I'm working on a custom strat-like body and I've never had a glittery guitar, so I thought I might as well try it.
    Also, I have this strange wiring set-up that I'm still trying to figure out- it's only tough since I'm new to guitar building/modding and I'm worried about messing it up and having to buy new electronics. I don't mind publicly sharing the idea with anyone who wants to take a stab at helping me figure it out, but I'm also fine with just watching tutorials on more standard wiring set-ups with a 3-way switch if anyone could recommend some that are easy to follow.

    • @HyphenatedReality
      @HyphenatedReality Před 4 lety

      @Dom Koyuki The body's been shaped and routed, the bridge is in place, and I ordered a neck to throw on it after two failed attempts at making one. Figuring out how to make a neck was difficult, since my dad's just a normal woodworker, and this would've been our first fully custom build.
      I had a few different setbacks, since my old bass's volume pot broke in two pieces and I didn't have any extras around to fix it with. Then I sprained my wrist skating, so neither my bass or the guitar build have been touched in a month.
      I hope yours turns out great, though! Sounds like it'd be cool to see some pictures of when it's done

    That will be a fun project. Suggestion on your wiring harness: get it set up with an Armstrong Blender (SSS blends to HSH) no push pull it's a wiring mod only from a standard circuit and allows blending rather than hard on/off. Easy walk through (czcams.com/video/lWF1L7GBYfU/video.html) or find the diagram on the web. It also gives a couple of funky out of phase tones good for fuzz. It's my auto-mod on a Strat these days. Second is try a Hendrix style reverse angled bridge pickup slot pickguard, which is an easy no-solder reversible swap.
