  • The WDR BIG BAND plays "Repression" with Jakob Bänsch on trumpet and Johanna Summer on piano (composer: Jakob Bänsch / arranger: Michael Abene). Other solos will be played by J Ben Fitzpatrick on tenor saxophone and Hans Dekker on drums. The WDR BIG BAND is conducted by Michael Abene, former chief conductor of the WDR BIG BAND . Produced live as part of the concert project "Young Cats II" in WDR Studio 4 / Cologne (April 2023).
Promoting young talent at its best: In its "Young Cats" concerts, the WDR Big Band presents exceptional young talents from the German jazz scene. This time it's pianist Johanna Summer and trumpeter Jakob Bänsch. Both were members of the Bundesjazzorchester, the world's only talent factory for future professional jazz musicians, and have already played alongside numerous jazz greats such as Jiggs Whigham, Django Bates, Bob Mintzer and Jim Snidero. And despite their young age, they have long since made a name for themselves with their own formations: impulsive and extraordinarily creative.

Bonjour à tous, c'est en écoutant un mix proposé par YT selon mes goûts que j'ai découvert ces 2 jeunes talents. La force de WDR Big Band c'est sa capacité de régénération.

This band is always thrilling! (And I really like the sound with all that wood around the room. Hans' drumming sounds especially nice. Not a plexiglass fan...)

WOW, Jakob and Johanna are 2 very impressive young talents, both of which appear to still be in their teens! The "Young Cats" series is another of the incredibly varied range of content that WDR tackle each year. Bravo, WDR!

Great tune, but not feeling anything repressed! Once again, the Big Band plays without inhibitions and that’s a good thing!
