Quest 2 vs Quest 3: Is it REALLY time to upgrade?

  • The Quest 3 is nearly here but is it really worth buying over the Quest 2, or upgrading to it if you already have one! Quest 3 is an absolute beast when it comes to specs, it's a clear and assertive upgrade over the Quest 2 for sure but not everyone will need the power and features it's offering, for newcomers and those curious about VR the Quest 2 still offers an incredible quality experience and the best value proposition on the market; 299.99 for a VR headset with a robust back catalogue that includes almost every single highly rated VR game is actually really incredible. Today I'm weighing up the Quest 2 vs Quest 3 debate and talking about whether or not it's worth buying the Quest 3 at this point in time. Ultimately it all boils down to who you are and what you're looking for when it comes to a new VR, or perhaps your first VR, headset.

I just bought the Quest 3 and my daughter owns the Quest 2 but I also had a Quest 2 myself for years. If your wondering which to get I'll just say go with the 2 for now. It's super cheap right now and really at the end of the day the differences aren't that great. The thing I cares about is the graphics leap of the 3 and as of now that leap isn't big enough to justify the price tag. Maybe that will change a year down the road but today it's not. Also the color passthrough is nice but unless your lighting is just right it's very grainy. Mixed reality is really cool but it feels sort of like a gimmick to me. I did find motion sickness is lower on the three for me although I do have my VR legs. Visually speaking the lenses on the 3 are the biggest reason to upgrade also the bump in resolution but to be honest once your in game it's something you forget about. At the end of the day I feel like the 2 being only $250.00 is just such a bargain especially considering the VR library available. In truth the biggest problem with VR is having a great game come out, playing it for a while and then the quest collecting dust until the next game. Money to value the quest 2 wins for me hands down.

    I would purchase a Quest 3 IF:
    1) I could install what I want, when I want without having to go through the store or jumping through hoops
    2) It had a larger support/focus on non-gaming applications (see point 1).
I think I'm just going to wait for Valve to make a move, or a critical-mass of must-have titles on the platform. Until then, I'm holding off. And based on the reported reduction in shipments, I'm not alone.

Your first point is possibly the dumbest thing I have read in a while. What the fuck 3rd option for installing games are you talking about? Literally any option that isn't through the store is going to defacto require jumping through hoops. What kind of nonsense are you spewing?
And for the record, the Quest 3 does allow you to install whatever you want. Some people even pirate games by downloading the APKs and installing them manually. You are literally clueless with how technology works.

A fantastic and well thought out video/overview. I love how you not automatically push everyone towards the new and better but instead list pros and cons for each. Well done!
I got the Quest 2 as soon as it was available (upgraded from a Rift CV1) and loved it, both for its standalone capabilities and for wirelessly connecting to my PC (nothing is quite like flight simulators in VR). Unfortunately I lost it in a fire back in March and have contemplated buying a new one but never really gotten as far as actually doing so... And then the Meta Connect revealed the Quest 3 and I instantly prepurchased it. Hopefully it'll arrive soon as I know it will be a perfect fit for me. Also looking forward to PianoVision. ^_^

You said it right! I agree to the fullest. Besides, I think that the fabric strap of the Quest3, though not the most comfortable and the smaller controllers, make it a compact set. If you want to bring it along on your holiday, it is less cumbersome than the Quest2.
I love the thought of color passthrough in 3D. In quality it might even be better than that of my Pico4. I use the passthrough where it is possible: fitness games, just simply walking with my headset to where I play, watching movies or being in the home environment.
And since I have been putting some extra money away since I heard about it last year, it is an easy purchase for me and I'll be buying the 512 gb version (my Quest2 has 64gb only).

I am in Canada and had to order a Pico 4 via Amazon UK and I love it, and when I look at the specs/reviews of Quest 3, I'm just not super excited. But, admittedly part of that is I'm all in for PCVR, not standalone hardware/processors. But would love to see a roundup of those thoughts.

Definitely try population one: not everybody loves it, but plenty do, and it's free. Besides Team Beef's VR conversions, it's *the* VR experience/game that I keep coming back to (and I have quite a few games ...). Obviously try PCVR, too, if you can ... my personal experience was that virtual desktop works much better for me than the native airlink solution, even with a USB3 C cable, so bear that in mind: different people have different experiences, and that topic has been discussed to death all over the internet, and note that quite a bit of 'tinkering' can be required for some people, which can be tedious (that's true of most 2d games nowadays anyway? pages of graphics settings, card configuration, Windows system settings etc. and this adds another layer on top). You also need a more powerful PC for this than 2-d games, particularly graphics card. Enjoy!

It’s so mind boggling the very first time you experience it. Like turning your head around in game and actually seeing the world around you. Lol first time I played it was so immersive even with the limited tech that I went to lean on a table in game and almost fell over. Laughed so hard. Couldn’t believe I even did that without thinking 😂

This is exactly the kind of video I asked for! Great job, thank you Ben :D
Im a Quest 2 user with a decent PCVR ready rig, so I will probably take my time with a decision. Last 2 years with Q2 only taught me, that my interest in VR gaming has its highs and lows, and in heights I could play for max 2.5h a day (charging the headset once midway) and in lows I wouldnt touch it at all or for very short sessions for as long as 2-3 months (central-eastern Europe here, hate the climate change, boiling me in my AC-less flat through the summer). In other words, I spent 400$ on something that I use kinda rarely + I bought a lot of accessories to make it as comfortable as it gets. Im not saying I havent got my money's worth, but it's mainly because I havent got any headset before, so obviously going from none headset to cool versatile headset for such a price is a nice upgrade.
Next 6 months will be critical I guess. There are new games coming, but nothing really that exciting and revolutionary. Pancake lenses are the biggest thing for me, because they will improve the experience overall. Im waiting to see if mixed reality gets something interesting or at least something interesting gets announced. And as we have seen from Quest Pro, Meta doesnt hesitate to drop a price a bit if the sales arent going as great as they would like, so it depends on how many people get lured by vision of the upgrade.
On the other hand, it's good that Quest 2 stands viable for the coming years, because for me it means I can take my share of second-hand market and probably sell my Quest 2 + accessories locally for something between 150-200€, which I can reinvest into Quest 3, basically making it a price of Quest 2 back in the day. Im just waiting for the sweet spot - Quest 2 doesnt get cut on updates yet, but something exciting is coming to VR and I need a Quest 3 to run it (or I get ulitmately irritated with how awful those rings on Q2 lenses are, try a Quest 3 somewhere myself and decide that I cant go back :D )

I'm never a day one buyer, but ill probably upgrade to the Q3.I think its biggest pluses are the lenses and pass thru. Just from an everyday use I think it makes a big difference. My biggest disappointment with the Q3 is not having a 256gb model. Memory is so cheap now, I'm having a hard time paying an extra $100 for less space than the top Q2. Then the 512 is almost double in price and I'm really not sold on idea that potential AAA standalone titles are going to be bigger that say 50 to 60gb. I think 20gb will be a stretch for 99% of newer titles.

I could possibly see a Q3 Pro (or whatever its called) being not so far off, with (relative) limited processing power on the Q3, PSVR2 has already shown what can be done with foveated rendering... and eye tracking in MR would be generally great. if so, another reason to wait 'if you can' ;)

With Quest 3 coming out, I imagine there will be a number of Quest 2s for sale on the secondhand market for a very attractive price point (256gb models in stores are still around $450-$500 plus 15% sales tax), so I'll be getting a Quest 2 instead (already have prescription lenses and a bobo m2 strap from when I temporarily had a headset from my old job). pancake lenses is mostly the way to go, a big part is the way better sweetspot. the previous was really important to get it right unless you really wanted a head ache. at least for me, it was crap. with pancake it´s not as important with perfect ipd. if you have any issues with the eyes like the eyes don´t line up exactly and such pancake is too prefer. don´t even get why anyone that actually tried a pico4 with such lenses would actually go back to something without it if you primarily play pc vr that is..another thing i really find odd in the vr market is why the lenses seems to usually be made with plastic, is it really that expensive to actually use glas like on a cellphone or is it another issue?

I bought Demeo on the Oculus store instead of Steam because of the MR update. Even in dodgy B&W it still felt completely different playing it on my dining table and being able to eat and drink while playing. Slow paced or table top turn based games in MR make a lot of sense. No shortage of actual tabletop games they could adapt either.
I'm assuming that passthrough data isn't available for PCVR use on the Quest 3? In which case MR would be the main reason I'd buy anything on Quest instead of PC.
The only thing that holds me back from ordering already is that I don't do preorders, and I'm concerned about the lack of eye tracking relegating the Quest 3 to a previous generation of experiences if eye tracking takes off as a standard XR interface.

When you buy it on the Oculus store you get the PC version included as well which is nice. I tend to always buy my stuff on the Oculus store for the crossbuy unless something is like a Humble Bundle or a big sale on Steam. The Oculus PC software on Quest 2 already does passthrough through the Link but you need to enable it under developer features and not many games support it.

Beat Saber is an exception that comes to mind but I bought it twice so I could play standalone or at home with all my mods and stuff. Most of the big titles that had a PCVR version I ended up getting it included. I actually take my headset places so having access to standalone is nice.
