  • Though discontinued five years ago, many DJs will use the Technics SL-1200MK2 turntable for years to come. However, in addition to maintenance, some folks will want to customize and upgrade their decks. In this week's episode of "Tips & Tricks," Mojaxx looks at some of the most popular options, from straight tonearms to custom paint jobs.

I have two 1210 mk 2 in mint condition. Purchased together in 2001 with close matching serial numbers. I've looked after them very well. God bless Technics and drum n bass!

I still have my Technics 1200 MK2 from when I was a DJ in the late 90's and now it is setup in my office connected to a pre amp and Sonos Controller. I get to relax and listen to some classic vinyl. I miss my days at Rent-A-DJ. Those were some amazing days!

I started Djing on a set of Gemini BD-10 belt drive turntables. It was so hard to mix on, but I got a set of Technics 1200 MK2 a year later. They were used but it was one of the coolest parts on my life feeling how smooth the platter was and being able to finally back cue. Such a defining moment in my life. I got a brand new set in I think it was in 2002 (1210M3D's) I still use them today! I did add some custom LED lights, they look great!

My mom bought me my first pair in 1989 on my 18th birthday because she said she saw something in me when I was mixing freestyle on my pos Gemini turntables. And she was absolutely right because even tho my career was a nyc firefighter for 22 years I also ran my own DJ business. Once she bought me those decks and at that time they were only $300 brand new each. She invested money into something that she saw that I was passionate about and once I had those turntables in my room it was ON!!!!
I stopped going out every night. We lived in Brooklyn ny and instead of hanging out on the steps outside I stayed in my room all night just mixing different beats together to see what works and what didn’t. I took all my grandparents classical records out from the basement and I would listen all through these songs to find that beat that would produce a sick ass scratch or a cut. I mastered these turntables like the instruments they are. When I did go out to clubs it was mostly for research to see what works and what didn’t. And I’m telling all y’all young people hard work all pays off because I never not had a DJ gig on my days off it would either be a private party, wedding, fdny nypd parties or just because I had a lot of friends from work who had a piece of a club and if I was needed I would always take the work. I was dependable and loyal. And in nyc in the late 80s to 2015 when I hung up my headphones and moved to Florida. Loyalty and dependability buys you a lot of work as a DJ in a big city like nyc. I still own all 4 or my turntables. I have the 2 1200mk2 that my mom Rip bought me and I bought those technics 1210 m5g grandmaster turntables when they came out and I used mostly them along with my pioneer cdj 2000s. And in my last year I bought a pair of pioneer plx 1000s and I kid y’all not both tone arm bearings completely broke loose within a few months of owning them. And I was not beating on them at all. Pioneer fixed them under warranty and I sold them as soon as I got them back. Total junk compared to my 1200s. I had to replace many sets of AV cables and I had to replace one tone arm on one of my 1989 1200s because the bearings broke out after 25 years of running them every weekend. My 4 1200s and my pioneer DJM 2000 mixer and my vinyl records are the only DJ equipment I still have because every once and a while I get the urge to set everything up and just start spinning in my living room. Plus if any family or friends want me to spin at a party I’ll volunteer my time. I’m still downloading music and I still keep me library current with the DJ pools. But anyway I felt I had to share my feelings on how these turntables changed my life and once my mom invested in me my life changed for the better. Best of luck to you new DJs. It’s a great tool to learn to beat match by ear. But if you are new to the craft the there is nothing wrong with using the sync button as a tool to help train your brain to listen for and count the beats, bars, and phrases.

My 1200 MK2’s are 40 years old. I’ve just got them back off my son who had them for about 10 years but he’d stopped using them. As I’ve decided to do a vinyl gig next month I got them back.
The tonearm height adjuster was stuck on both decks, so after some CZcams research I discovered it’s not a unique issue and how to fix it.
As it involved opening them up I also decided to change the RCA cables and internally ground them. I’ve totally fallen back in love them and think I might even go down the DVS or Phase route now.

This is so, interesting to see how technology has come in a way that bedroom DJs have , become interior designers, from having a black & gold SL 1200s,were you can Ingrave your name,Vastex with sliver plated 10"mixers in all coloures & some plastic ones where available at the time & not forgetting the PCM-400with gold finish & the one you have in the back ground & also the there blue range with silver EQs a few years ago,I rembember order caps for Gemini, because Genini brought out a green mixer call the Executioner at the time so,I some caps of that too custom my mixer Red for the tops, blue bass, green for treble, ,gray for the min & max. & orange & gray for send & return this was so many years ago,in which I still have to with day. I could also go on to boost a few good memoires & few laughs along way about, being a bit consivitive back then, don't get me wrong I love design in every way these coolercaps are ideal right now. When I saw the faders I thought Licorice Allsorts, but also I rembember the HW International mix from back in day; I also remember reading the Ebony magazine it featured George Bensons brother who was a DJ & he was using a PMX 9000 the PMX 9000 I rember saw,was black & white ,but Georges brother had red, blue, green, I'm not to sure,it was along time ago. I leant some that mag, & never saw it again

Question in regards to self grounding...
I take it they haven't grounded them via the rca grounding or have they?
The rca ground mod where the earth is bridged to the rca on the pcb ISN'T a good idea. They're not a common ground and essentially your introducing noise to the signal and are more likely to have ground loop issues.
If they haven't bridged the rca ground I'd like to know how it has been done :)

    PLEASE HELP
    I have 2 SL 1200s mk2 s and have owned them since about 1995.
One of them started acting up- the plate would go back and forth and so I left it with a “reputable” audio company.
They said I needed to replace the board, and after 4 years they finally got the part and did the job.
Now I’m testing the turntable at home, and all audio coming from it is distorting at the lower ends, like it was playing through a ripped speaker.
I’ve balanced the arm and set the anti skate as described by the manuals and it’s made no difference.
I’ve swapped cartridges and styli (which work fine on the other 1200) and nothing helps.
The RCA cables are new from the board installation, so I don’t think it’s those, any other advice or ideas MUCH APPRECIATED
    ❤️🔥

I've had my pair since 91, only had to replace a pitch fader and a chip that failed on one of the tonearm. (Had them internally grounded as well)Looking to replace my stock tonearms in the future. Can you let us know if there is a difference in sound quality with the straight tone arm, as compared to the stock ones when playing real vinyl? I'm really open to straight tone arms with my 1200s. I still play live vinyl on occasion. Props on your modded 1200s...straight up awesomeness!

Dude, how much money are we talking for a mod from djsdreamcustoms? Do they service at the same time?

This! This is what I need to know - a ballpark figure would do depending on the initial state of the turntables, then a price for paint job, a price for detachable rca and grounding, price for dicers etc. Surely someone can give me a figure considering it's a simple job in comparison to others I've seen. Everyone I've asked has ummed and ahhhed but simply couldn't give me a figure and I'm not packing my 1200s to anyone until then. Am I supposed to let them demand a ridiculous ransom once they're in possession of them? No way Senhor Jose or whatever your names are - shame because I'm looking to get some work done on mine, they're in perfect working order but want to treat them for Christmas :)
      Peace

Need to angle the cart on a straight arm for playback on real vinyl. (You can get angled headshells if you want.) Straight arms with straight carts and sphericals come about for scratch. If the cart is not angled = tracking distortion, channel imbalance and record wear... not major concerns on scratch mixes but sampling, archiving or basic blending, not the best.
