Another classic game released by Sega into the arcades in the late 80's, I'm almost certain that anyone who watches this video will have played the game in arcade, or most likely, one of the home console/computer versions.
Paying homage to action movies such as Conan the Barbarian and Red Sonja, the game tells of a land besieged by the evil Death Adder, wielder of the titular Golden Axe, slaughterer of innocents and generally unpleasant sort of person.
Fortunately, there are three bold adventurers who are prepared to put their lives on the line in an effort to take the fight to Death Adder and his minions. The objective of the game is to fight through a series of horizontally scrolling levels on a journey to the castle where Death Adder holds the King and his daughter hostage.
The player must first choose which fighter to choose in the fight against Death Adder: Ax Battler the barbarian, Tyris Flair the amazon and Gilius Thunderhead, the dwarf. Each of the characters differs in striking distance and possesses differing levels of magical power.
On the subject of magic, this is one of the key features of the game. Small impish thieves will occasionally appear during play and will drop magic potions when attacked. Collecting these potions will fill the player's magic bar located to the top of the screen. The more potions the player carries, the more powerful the spell that can be unleashed. The artwork used in the spell casting looks truly excellent, even to this day; the massive fire-breathing dragon that Tyris Flare can summon is both devastating and brilliant to behold! Casting the spell will consume all of the potions currently held, so the player must make a considered choice regarding when to cast magic.
The game mixes things up by introducing beasts that can be mounted and used in combat. Capturing a dragon from an enemy quickly gives you the advantage, although taking damage will will instantly dismount you and gives the enemy the opportunity to steal the animal back. Unfortunately, the beasts can only be used on the level where they were found and will run off between levels.
One unusual thing about the game is the level of difficulty, which is relatively low. The purpose of coin-op games was to keep the player pumping money into the slot in a bid to reach the end of the game, yet Golden Axe can be beaten relatively easily providing that the player doesn't get surrounded by enemies or takes undue risks.
Although it might be something of a disservice to describe the game as Double Dragon with swords, the tried-and-tested beat 'em up mechanics and high fantasy setting combine to deliver one of the best arcade experiences ever. The game would receive an excellent conversion to Sega's own Mega Drive console the same year and would be ported to every major home computer system available, which would only continue to cement it's cult status amongst gamers for many years to come.

They forgot the little green thief guy who drops the food.
That giant turtle level is so creative, the 80s were all about excess and this delivers I'm every way!
Golden Axe é um clássico da SEGA que me fixou definitivamente para o mundo dos Arcades. Tive meu primeiro contato com os arcades no inicio dos anos 80, com os jogos: Columbia, Gálaga, Elevator Action, Circus Charlie e um de F1 da Taito que nao lembro do nome, mas era com volante, pedal de acelerador, marcha e jogava em pé! Depois anos mais tarde, já metade e final dos anos 80 vieram Double Dragon, Sly Spy (Agente Secreto) Robocop, Dragon Ninja, Golden Axe, E-SWAT, Vênus, Street Fighter 1, Final Fight, Sega Rad Mobile (Simulador de corridas), After Burner (Simulador de aeronaves de guerra). Ainda peguei Tartarugas ninjas e SImpsons, alem do Caddillac and Dinossoaurs, Moonwalker e Terminator 2. Final dos anos 90 ainda cheguei a visitar fliperamas para jogar alguns games do Neo Geo. Bons tempos!
Golden Axe is a SEGA classic that definitely set me in the Arcade world. I had my first contact with arcades in the early 80's, with the games: Columbia, Gálaga, Elevator Action and an F1 game that I don't remember the name of, but it was with a steering wheel! Then years later, in the mid to late 80's came Double Dragon, Robocop, Dragon Ninja, Golden Axe, E-SWAT, Venus, Street Fighter 1, Sega Rad Mobile (racing simulator), After Burner (aircraft simulator war). I still got Ninja Turtles and Simpsons, besides Caddillac and Dinossoaurs, Moonwalker and Terminator 2. Good times!
This demo seems a little more realistic than some of the others I've seen. Don't recall seeing anyone this good for real in an arcade hall in my city mind you, but this was really good. It also brings back fond memories, thank you. 😊

At heart it'ss a generic beat'em up in the double dragon family, but the fantasy theme is fun and it's made with such obvious love - you can steal mounts and they have (pretty OP) special attacks, the 'treasure goblins' and special attacks feel very rewarding, the graphics were more than decent for the time, and there was a sense of story progression, even if it was bog standard 'get the big bad'.
Easy to pick up and be half-decent at, but it took me quite a few coins to master back in the day, good playthrough.
Pretty sure two of the screams are sampled from "First Blood". Gault falling from the helicopter and David Caruso's character in the forest.

When the bald giants with hammers, knights and Death Adder die, the scream sound effect is from Conan The Barbarian when he sets the the trap with the spiked log and kills the bad guy who carries the giant hammer.
I love how games back then literally had 15 minutes of content yet today gamers get angry about $60 for a 80 hour game being expensive
This is an arcade game. They were meant to be short because people would play them just for a while.
Arcade games were quarter-gobblers, being massively difficult so that you had to spend 3-4 weeks' allowance just to get good enough to see that 1MB ending.
Those were the days.

The Genesis version added some levels. The arcade version just ends after you beat Death Adder.

Is there a difficulty option in this that allows you to continue the campaign after defeating death adder and you have to then fight death bringer?
I think Death Bringer is something that Sega added to the Mega Drive version; it's not in the original arcade as far as I know.
@@AL82RetrogamingLongplays yeah was having a read on Wikipedia and it seems that way. Loved my copy of mega games 2, I think it was, with this, streets of rage and revenge of shinobi.

Xbox one has the 360 golden axe trilogy, the golden axe featured in it is the arcade version, while the others are obviously the sega genesis versions.

Awesome gameplay! Where does the "60 fps" come in? I noticed that the "imps" and their bottles tend to more rather fluidly, but the rest of the game looks pretty 30fps-ish.
The video itself was likely recorded in and rendered at 60 FPS.
@@2bussy That may be how the video was rendered like you say, but is pointless if the game's original fps was only 30fps to begin with. We will only see effectively 30fps.
Backgrounds and such moved at 60fps in all of those pseudo-3D games back then. However, at 32MB (1/1000th what we have today), character frames were drawn at 5-12 fps. Some of the old 32-64KB NES and 128-512KB SMS games were drawn as low as 2-5 fps. Slow down could bring the whole screen down to just 2-3 fps for the game!
