      what about a Sorcerer who fakes/disguised being a Wizard, and just does like, faux stage Magician-y stuff, the V,S stuff and just puts on a front about being a well learned Wizard. if the world is anti-Sorcerer, or if Wizards are more respected, etc. could also work for a Warlock.

      Hey I left it in a comment but I really want your guyses opinion on this. if you had a build a 4-5 member party in 5e of all the same class but different subclasses and races what would you do? Me personally would do Monk or Mystic
      For monk it would be
      Furbog way of the four elements
      Hill dwarf way of the long death
      Wood elf Kensi with a long bow
      Halfling Shadow monk
      Lizard-folk open hand monk
      Hobgoblin Kensi and take 3 feets to get heavy armor master
      And then of course with Mystic you can kind of just do whatever you want because Mystic is completely broken (tank,caster,Dps, support why pick one when you can do all four)

      So yeah, I once rolled a Tiefling Sorceror (Red Dragon Variety) who didn't know he was a Sorceror. A very bare bones background of his powers was that his mother was a bombastic, can-do-anything sorceror lady who was known for her attire, particularly her Sunglasses. Well, his mother being a bad-ass adventure lady couldnt settle down and left her husband with her child in a village that eventually came under wing of a Red Dragon... one day, said Tiefling warrior in stupid youth, took his mothers heirloom (her sunglasses) off the shelf and went out to challenge the dragon which was doing it's usual pillaging and stealing of women ect. Miraculously, instead of chomping him, the Red Dragon laughs at him and pisses on him before smacking him away with his tail. The urine, combined with his latent magical power, unlocked his magic abilities but the thing is... he doesn't know that, and he goes out into the world to gather a team of heroes (his disciples he would call them) to take down this Dragon.
      As it turns out, his sorcery manifests in his bombastic attitude, just like his mother. He uses his mothers shades as a focus (without realizing it, most of the time he's a powerless idiot, until he puts on those shades which makes him a suprisingly powerful idiot) and his somatic gestures come from an almost gangsta style of hand movement as he verbally assaults his enemies.
      He was basically Kamina from Gurren Lagann. lol

    I like sorcerers who, because they've always had magic, see magic as the natural answer to any problem.
    Thirsty? Mage hand a cup over.
    They don't shower, they prestidigitation themselves in the morning.
    They don't yell to get someones attention they simply message.
    By the time they hit 4th or 5th level the player starts dropping 1st level spells like this just for role-playing, they know they shouldn't but its fun.

      Same. I really enjoy that idea that since say, a wizard gains their abilities through hard study they have a higher appreciation to not use it frivilously but a sorcerer who was born with this shit is like "Shit, you need to get across this lake? A way I like thinking about fireball being cast by a wizard, a sorcerer, and warlock is as follows:
    A wizard is the website builder that's gone to school and knows programming, and can make websites from scratch.
    A sorcerer uses a service like Squarespace to help them build a site, but they still do it themselves.
    A warlock is the person that doesn't wanna bother with either so they just hire a webmaster.

    Watching this, I thought of a sorcerer who was raised by wizards due to his innate magical ability, but he never quite got how to do magic from the books like his peers. So in an effort to fit in, he carries around a spellbook and pretends to cast from it, but still just uses his sorcerer slots because he still can't wizard "properly"

    • @flyingfujigi8560
      @flyingfujigi8560 Před 2 lety +1

      I had thought of something similar, except when joining the party, it would be cool to never formally announce my class, and just allow the party to assume that as a spellcaster with a spellbook, naturally I was a wizard. And actually play a wild mage sorc. Avoiding any meta magic as to not give it away, just wait till a crit fail, and then suddenly reveal I was a sorcerer all along by rolling on the Wild Magic Surge Table. Would be a hilarious reveal.

    "You send them off to Hogwarts" kinda brings me on a tangent about my interpretation of classes and their interaction with magic.
    I see a Sorcerer as what essentially happens if you *don't* send a magically-gifted character to magic school - they have to figure things out by instinct and sheer force-of-will, and that causes them to manifest whatever Sorcerous Origin features they get.
    Hogwarts is basically where they take potential Sorcerers before they manifest anything too drastic (like, say, dragon-scales for skin), and teach them to let their magic out in a controlled manner so it doesn't affect them as much, effectively turning them into Wizards.

    One simple change I made to sorcerers that seems to have made a significant difference to the players was saying that the sorcerers themselves serve as an arcane focus, and thus don't need one separate from themselves or a bag of components like wizards do. It doesn't have a massive impact mechanically, but thematically and player-enjoymentwise, it makes a huge difference.

    • @jmartin4396
      @jmartin4396 Před 6 lety +15

      This was my approach as well. I look at it that they aren't actually casting a Wizard spell, they're using they're own innate power to duplicate the effect of a Wizard spell. They are duplicating the results without going through the same process.

    • @paulcoy9060
      @paulcoy9060 Před 6 lety +16

      Did this for sorcerers, as well as warlocks. Pact of the Tome's book is treated like an object that gives you powers, not a real book you can write things in. The spells just appear in it's pages. Their Patron has given them magical power, not the training to research the equations needed to cast like a wizard. Plus, wizards get way more spells, because they earned them, and warlocks and sorcerers stick to about 4 spells they use constantly.

    I always play sorcerers emotionally, like their emotions just use magic sometimes, maybe when the sorcerer gets angry smoke starts curling off of their robes, or the air gets significantly hotter, maybe when they've just suffered a loss the area around them is bleak, dark and cold to reflect their depression. My sorcerers start off vibrant and full of life, but as they figure out that their emotions are dangerous they start locking them away, becoming cold and calculating. But it doesn't always have to be depressing like that, they could just be very emotional, the party could know that and is always on guard trying to keep the sorcerer from getting pissed and accidentally burning the tavern down because that one drow lady thought she could bark orders at him. or maybe nobody knows why bad things happen to people who piss off the sorcerer. it's a fun concept to toy with.

      I'm making a phoenix sorcerer too, and I seriously considered doing something like that. He was raised under the instruction of a wizard and was favored above the other apprentices because of his innate ability, so he could get away with just about anything and would occasionally skip out on training that was "too easy" and go read the ancient texts in the library. I was so close to making him set books on fire by accident while reading - still might do it, even, since I haven't played him in a campaign yet.

That because of his heritage and his wild surges of magic he and others constantly blame himself for when anything goes wrong. Tieflings are seen by common folk as “bad luck” so add in fuel to that fire and then throw in a 2 lbs packet of gunpowder that is emotional instability and have said magic be tied to their emotional state.

      I've built one who is a GOO warlock and wild sorcerer who was actually a non-magical scholar seeking the secrets of the universe, until his studies led to a vision of the cosmos, where he saw one of the great old ones and became simultaneously imbued with that old one's power and the wild magic of the universe. He's a wood gnome, a scholar, and a very intelligent character with more than a touch of madness about him.

    When I read the blurp for Sorcerer and for Warlock, my immediate thought was "If we have a multi-generation family of Warlocks, all with the same patron, will that produce a Sorcerer?". Just recently, I found a Homebrew subclass for the Sorcerer called Eldritch Sorcery that seems like it might be reworked slightly to fit that. Currently it is more "use INT instead of CHA if you want to! Gain access to Eldritch Blast!" at first level. Later levels grant greater control of the psionic powers you wield, reducing the cost of creating Spell Slots and eventually casting Telekinesis without a Spell Slot, just some Sorcery Points.
    I think either use that subclass, multiclass into Warlock for a few levels, or some combination of the two.

    I was a DM for a friend who made a character who was a sorcerer who was in denial of his powers. He rolled will saves every round, with the DC going up or down depending on the character's mood, if he was hit, etc. If he failed, I would choose the spell he would cast and tell him what his character suddenly felt compelled to do (he gave me control of his spell list). He played as a hand-to-hand fighter type character until 4th level when he finally accepted his sorcerous abilities and accepted instruction and guidance from a fellow sorcerer.

    In my version I see sorcerers gain their power by infusing themselves and form a spiritual connection with the magical source. That way their back story doesn't have to involve them getting it from birth they can study, train and earn it.
    That's also how I justify being able to multiclass into it.

    One thing I did to help sorcerers (probably my second favorite class behind warlock in terms of flavor) was remove focuses and components for sorcerers because THEY are the source. Also dissolving wild magic and making the table available to all sorcerers on every spell and triggers on 1 or 20. It definitely gives a more personal feel to the class while also making an unknown for them to deal with them. My players definitely seem to have much m!ore fun this way. Love the content guys! :^)

    To fill the scholarly sorcerer idea, perhaps a wizard who, in trying to understand sorcerers, subjected themselves to powerful magics in order to make themselves a sorcerer. Treating themselves as an experiment of how sorcerers work. They understand spells from a wizard’s perspective, but for flavor everything comes out just a little bit wrong; spells fire off subtlety or get twinned if their control lapses. As a wizard they only knew the nice, simple Burning Hands, but as they become a stronger sorcerer the spell is overfilled with magic and becomes a Scorching Ray.

    This reminds me of one of my favorite characters I've created that I want to try to rp. Garis Vaughn, red draconic bloodline sorcerer. He was basically manufactured by a red dragon and a wizard ally to give them a weapon against a rival powerful dragon because the rival had a sorcerer minion and Garis's dragon "father" wanted one too. The two basically created this test tube baby and (non-dragonborn) and raised him to be a perfect evil minion but eventually consider him a failed experiment when he refuses to kill the last member of an adventuring party that tried to wipe out dragon dad. Garis escapes with the aide of the last adventurer he couldn't kill and is raised by an ally of the fallen party. He's lawful neutral because he believes he cannot ever be truly good and so follows a very strict code given by his adopted parent to keep himself and his magic in check. He tries to keep his emotions subdued (and fails more than he'd like to admit). His goal is to eventually kill his evil mother and father to keep them from doing horrific damage to the world but as he grows he needs to also hide from them. In the world largely I'd imagine people aren't TOO freaked out by a sorcerer with draconic abilities since they just assume he's connected with a gold dragon or something but he's VERY cagey about who his actual parents are because the evil wizard and the dragon who are his mother and father so to speak are known quantities and people WOULD freak out if they knew that much. As for if people can tell he's a sorcerer I imagine he has eyes that go to slits if he gets too riled up and perhaps there's an intesnsity about him whenever he's around that makes people think of a predator a bit.

As with Jim said my current favorite shadow sorcerer tabaxi stumbled upon a dark room carved into the sewers catacombs and this room was suffused with dark magics which leeched into my character. After a period of death-like coma he comes to and the room is completely normal, the energies having completely infused into the character. But who made that room, what did it do to him? Great way to give your DM a creative hook.

    I am currently working on a concept for a sorcerer that I'm planning to use soon. He's a blue draconic sorcerer that was abandoned at a young age because his parents were convinced he was completely useless and would only be a burden to raise. A blue dragon found him and decided to raise him as a servant as well as to be his eyes and ears around nearby towns. My sorcerer got his powers from living with that blue dragon for so long that the draconic essence collected in him as well. And the side effect to that life is...well he grew up thinking he was a really strange-looking young dragon, and the blue dragon found this amusing and never told him he was actually a human just for the laughs, so now he often gets the party in awkward situations rambling about draconic might when someone opposes him and then trying to lightning bolt the opposing party to death, the end result often being only a sad zap and some depressed smoke rising up from him

    I imagine sorcerers doing the same stuff with casting as other classes. A sorcerer casting magic missle does the exact same vocalizations and gestures as a Wizard would, but they Are Basically temporarily taught These components the Moment they cast Them. Like their innate source of Power Puts it in their mind.
    Metamagic would still work with normal components, except the components Are changed in subtle and incredibly detailed ways. Like a Twinned spell May have a vastly different component, and the method of how the component changes Might be different based on the spell and stuff like how far apart the two spell targets Are.
    So it'd still be Standard components, but metamagic is way too complicated to ever be learned and memorized by a Wizard.

    Wild Magic seems to be exactly what they wanted for a sorcerer that just "randomly" does stuff.
    Point at someone at hope it helps, maybe you "accidently" cast a Fireball, maybe a Finger of Death, or you give turn it Invisible and it will slaughter you group.
    Works very well, as the DM can kinda adjust the results to do whatever they want to happen (so nobody just randomly dies if they are somehow important for a story).
