  • With its ornate architecture and striking sea views, Odessa has been called the "Pearl of the Black Sea". Now though, the Ukrainian city has been "turned into a fortress", according to its mayor, as residents prepare for a possible assault by invading Russian forces, with barricades, anti-tank obstacles and sandbags scattered throughout the once bustling streets to protect the city's treasured monuments.

Try come to South Africa, over 3,000 people have been murdered in that country in the same time since the invasion on January 25th. A question, where were you questioning when the Allies were killing tens of thousands of civilians in Iraq and Afghanistan? Or is ok because they were allies doing the killing?

They will need it because if I am correct, Putin's main objective is Odessa.
      It will make sense.
Chinese news suggests that the best units of the Russian army are in the east and south; this is proven from how Russia seized Mariupol, Melitopol and Kherson. Yet for them to link up in the north will be suicide given the state of the war (especially if the raspititsa takes place). Bombing cities can be useful for reducing local resistance, yet this means lots of money spent, supplying troops and guarding them; each day the Russian army spends bombing cities and not properly getting at the Ukrainian army leaves them far more open and vulnerable to counterattack. Ukraine's open terrain also makes them open targets for bombs and drones - we have seen from USA's reluctance to provide a no-fly zone that Ukraine still has aerial power of any worth.
All Putin can do is to keep chipping away in the south, hoping that his forces can take Odessa in time. However, it seems that NATO is eager to give him a bloody nose and force some sort of regime change. There is talk that the Russian defence minister, Sergei Shoigu, is furious because Putin refused to let him use the best units for the invasion, they are mostly in the Wagner group, or in Putin's National Guard. Yes, there is no denying that Russia has some crack regulars, but not enough committed to the war to speed up the invasion as Putin wanted.

Those vehicle obstacles are set on good places. Yet another defense could be to weld and chain them all together or mine them. Even bombed or simply towing them off becomes more time consuming for the lead vehicle. The action of a vehicle dragging it or even stopping is increased perhaps. As they act as a chain of barriers or an anchor ⚓. Then the other vehicles in the column are stopped to wait. Classic ambush intersecting fields of fire.. 5 or 6 vehicles at a time. Over 100 such battles with over a thousand vehicles struck. 9000 Russian soldiers have died. Tow their wrecked vehicles into place on the edge of town. Here you go.

The Javelin can defeat landing craft, but a little more range wouldn't go amiss. We have the Israeli Spike for the purpose, which can reach out and touch amphibious forces from distances of up to 5 km, while the Javelin can manage only half of that.

      A story from WW2.
A small town wanted to delay the germans so the population could flee. They collected all the dinner plates. They put some face down on the road over about 1/3rd their very limited supply of landmines. After that they continued to place plates face down with nothing but some disturbed earth showing. After that they put some more mines under plates and then more with no mines. A small group of people with very little equipment slowed the germans down to a walking speed with that.
