One issue I encountered that wasn't covered was closed paths. When creating the path (CTR+J), if you have closed paths in the mix, they won't be attached, so you need to break them apart. Otherwise, when you import the path, you'll have multiple masks vs just one. So I used the cut tool (C) and clicked on a point on the path to break it apart. I did that for each closed path until I was left with only one path. Then it worked great!
@@zipdemons4975 Basically, when you have, let's say 5 separate closed paths that you want to combine. You have to be sure that you use the cut tool on each path. Once you try to join them (CTR + J), they should all become one path, if not, just do the process again until they are. Hope that's clear. :)

thanks. great video. How do you adjust the speed of the reveal and have the hand track to it. When I switch keyframes to easy ease and change the tangent the hand stay linear. When I copy the new keyframes over...it stays linear.
Hey, thanks for tutorial I have noob question Some of my paths don't want to join each other (ctrl + j) the selected objects can't be joined as they are invalid objects (Compound paths, text objects, graphs, live paint group) But what I have, it just simple vector grapfic of eye: 3 closred ellipses (eyelid, cornea and pupil) thanks in advance
Have you tried linking the hand video with the start value of the stroke effect with an expression? This way you could pile your stroke layers in illustrator in the same position and then never worry about syncing keyframes and realign the layers trough AE.

Did any of the solutions near the end of the video help? Those are the usual answers I have. On the other hand, my guess from your text is to make sure you are copying just the mask path and nothing else. Step by step is to expand the mask to reveal the “path” attribute in the mask. Hope that helps.

Help? All going fine until I go to create my mask. I can't see my paths after I try to copy and paste them from Illustrator into AfterEffects! I change the background color in AE. I go back to Illustrator and select my joined paths with no stroke or fill color, Ctrl+C, go back to AE, click on the correct layer(I only have one), hit Ctrl+V, but no paths appear. The light grey highlighted layer name turns darker grey when I paste and when I ctrl+Z, the dark grey goes back to light grey. It takes another Ctrl+Z to undo the background color change, so I know something happened when I tried to paste. Why can't I see or select my path and nodes after pasting??
ok, somehow I got my masks to appear after I messed around with the pen tool, moved the original line drawing around, and when the original selected layer has a centerpoint showing and edge of screen boundaries showing, the mask appears when I paste.

Make sure the dimensions of the Illustrator artboard is the same size as the composition. Also make sure the scale of the layer is 100. If it’s too big for the comp you’ll need to revise that artwork. Do not change the scale of the artwork layer.
I like After Effects more than Videoscribe. And yes I’ve used videoscribe about 10 years ago. I created this solution because I was sick of the lines and artwork not matching the hand movement in videoscribe. When you can upgrade to After Effects you’ll have more control and the animation looks a lot better in after effects. Let us know once you have a video using this method.

probably you didn't import your illustrator file as document size.
