    Well, If it hasn't been modified, that model holds 2qts, 1.9l), of engine oil. All Sportsman 500's take the same 2 quarts.

    did the older ones have a bigger oil tank on them? New ones only hold 1.9L.

    There are two locations for the oil - the first and if you only want to change one would be on the plastic box on the side of the machine. That and the oil filter should do it, but if you want to drain from the crankcase you have to go under the machine. There is not a ton of oil in the crankcase.

    I've got a 95 Polaris Sportsman 500. Is the oil change procedure the same for all years of these 500 Sportsman 4 wheelers? I just watched Ian Faieta's video on changing the oil in his 2012' and he mentioned something about bleeding the air out of the crankcase after changing the engine oil (?) I probably misunderstood him. But you didn't have to do that for yours. You changed the oil, started it up and it was good enough?

    Wonder if the scrambler 500 4x4 uses the same motor as the sportsman 500? It all looks the same. Oh yea +1 on the no oil in filter before you put it on haha. thats a must!

    Oil on the filter gasket isn't to make a good seal. It's so you can get it back off. If you put it on dry they stick like glue.

      Actually put lite coat fresh oil on any oil filter helps set the seal prevent oil leaks from oil filter gasket Dry seal 60% time will Leak or oil gasket in time will crack

    • @briankennedy5578
      @briankennedy5578 Před 3 lety

      @@garybelmore1691 if you use your oil filter long enough for the seal to crack , you need to study up on proper maintenance. The way a dry seal causes a leak is when you remove the filter , the seal remains on the engine because it gets stuck from no lubrication. When you spin it off it rips out of the filter. That can at times be quite a task. Quite often the filter crushes from the extreme force. That usually results in removing it in pieces. Sharp jagged tiny pieces. Then you still have the stuck seal and a thin disc with holes in it. If lucky enough to have access with air hammer it's easy from there. If not....depends how how resourceful and skilled you are. Anyway, if spin it off and seal stays on block and you don't notice you end up with a double gasket. Now you got a time bomb. Can be instant. Or might wait to surprise you. But the old gasket will blow out from the oil pressure. All your oil will pump out quickly. I'm a master certified tech. Been working on cars , trucks , equipment of all sorts and sizes for over 40 years. I have never once seen an oil filter leak from not sealing due to a dry seal. Unless some idiot put it on dry and cranks it down so tight the seal spits out because it can't slide on block surface as it turns.

    Hi, I just watched your video and I didnt see you prime the pump by pinching off the top hose on the oil tank. So, I was wondering if that was really necessary? I've looked at a lot of oil change videos and most of them speak about priming the pump if you drain the crank case. The procedure I used for mine was to drain the oil tank, start the bike for 20 seconds or so which forces out the rest of the oil thats in the crank case,(By this time ive already removed and replaced the filter) put the oil tanks plug back in and filled her up with fresh oil. What I need to know is...do I need to prime the pump by pinching the top hose or will the pump pick up the oil by itself again? Im half afraid to use my quad now lol!! Please help.

    Never use an open end wrench! Use WIX filter # 51358. DO NOT USE CRAPPY FRAM FILTERS if you love your machine!
