  • Lady Gaga is getting honest and open about the lasting pain she feels from being sexually assaulted as a teenager. During a heartbreaking appearance on the premiere episode of "The Me You Can't See," a new docuseries co-created by Prince Harry and Oprah Winfrey, the pop star revealed that she suffered a "total psychotic break" years after being left pregnant by her alleged rapist.

I work with sexual assault survivors. Some of these comments calling her a liar or criticizing her for not reporting it are very misguided. It is so much more complicated than that and you have no right to call her a liar. What a dangerous and destructive thing to say from your keyboard about a situation you know nothing about.
Anyone reading this that has suffered similar experiences- you deserve to heal. If you weren’t comfortable reporting what happened or naming your abuser, you do not need to feel guilty. You are carrying enough shame already. I am sorry for the other comments.

is there the slightest chance she might be lying? really sorry if this comes out as bad, but I'm genuinely concerned from both the sides of possibilities in such and similar cases
Edit: I'd like to take this chance to say that over the past months, I've come to realize that my first reaction shouldn't have been something like "what if she might be lying". This reaction was deeply rooted in the cases I've seen where women have pretended things. Books, cases, incidents... all that made it much harder for me to completely believe in Gaga. I failed to look at the broader picture, that doubters like myself have made it harder for women to open up about their issues, and I'm very sorry I failed to consider this before. May the comment section continue to contribute healing and compassion to survivors. Also hope that more of these unnecessarily doubting people come to realize the things I have. love

@@hithere2426 It's actually extremely difficult to bring a case against a man for sexual assault since there are usually no witnesses. I was assaulted and I went to the police. Nothing ever came of it. I spent a full day recounting what happened over and over to different officers who questioned me with things like "Well why weren't you wearing any underwear?" as if I deserved it because I wasn't wearing underwear that day. They questioned him and all he said was he wanted his lawyer. And that was it. Nothing more came of it. His family probably doesn't even know he went to the police station that day and his job (where the assault occurred) didn't fire him. There needs to be solid evidence like a video tape of it happening for it to be taken seriously, and at that point the evidence is pretty damning. So I really doubt there are many or any innocent men sitting in prison for a sexual assault they didn't commit.

It’s interesting to hear someone else who actually felt physical pain from a phycology response related to their PTSD. I was assaulted when I was 12, I had never dated anyone, and so when I went on my first date at around 15 I remember the guy put his arm around me and all of I sudden I was in physical pain. My whole body hurt and I thought I was just going to start crying. He was such a nice guy, but I was terrified to a point where my fear manifested itself as physical pain. It was one of the most horrible things I have ever experience. I found an excuse to get up, and I just had a mental breakdown over it. It didn’t help that we literally ran into my assaulter that night. Safe to say after being in a lot of metal pain, and having over a million flashbacks well going out with the really nice guy, I had to break things off with him and go back to therapy. Turned out I had PTSD… I always assumed what I went through wasn’t bad enough, so I never considered it. I’m proud of Lady Gaga for talking about this, hearing more people speak up, especially people we look up to, will encourage others to seek help. Sexual assault is such a shameful thing, when it shouldn’t be. I’ve always wondered why us, the survivors, feel ashamed over something we have no blame in. That needs to be changed.

I understand what you are saying. One time I was having dinner with my friend's family and my friend's mom said something that reminded me of my dad who abused me. I went to the bathroom because I started feeling sick but after I took some deep breaths because something inside me was telling me to breathe, I realized it was very much stemming from a mental pain. Mind, body, and soul is no joke. They are one in the same. I hope you are doing better now. That was my first experience of a panick attack and I had no idea it was one because of how "physical" it can get but I started getting better now. I notice when I feel under attack I start getting very hot to the point where I'm fighting to not faint, my face gets hot, and everything quite literally starts to spin. I'm not even trying to be funny but it's like Troy Bolton in High School Musical 3 singing "Scream". It makes me laugh but at the same time it doesn't. Like everything was literally spinning. You're not alone. Your pain is valid. And we're here for you. Mental Health is real. Keep going. Right now I just felt overwhelmed because my anxiety took over, it made me feel like it was "the end of the world" but I started branching out to see who else experienced it and I didn't know Lady Gaga was also a survivor. So please know it's not the end of the world. It may feel like it but it's not. Whenever you feel like you're at your limit your spirit will prove to you its not. I hope you know how supported you are. Much love stranger. ❤

I was molested by my dad all throughout my childhood and am barely speaking about it. Im 33. I have even asked myself why I waited so long. The truth is, I never wanted to talk about it. I had to after memories that I had bottled up came to the surface. From what I understand, our brain will keep the memories hidden to protect us. It protects us in the moment, but harms us long term. I think theres a song she wrote called “Swine.” (Fans, correct me) but its ab her assault and how it made her feel disgusting. she seems believable but there are a lot of reasons for someone to lie. Maybe not so much when you keep the alleged rapist anonymous, but even in those cases there can be social reasons or just things you are telling yourself or want to convince yourself of. It is extremely brave and extremely hard especially to not only have to remember what happened but also because of the amount of ignorance and victim blaming that happens quite often to survivors who speak out. It's not easy to have to talk about it and it's not easy having to remember everything that took place. The amount of humiliation survivors feel can be overwhelming and the trauma is unreal and unless u yourself have ever had that experience ( and judging by your screen name I highly doubt you were raped and dumped on the sidewalk by ur parents house when u were pregnant "Rick") you can never understand truly just how horrific that experience can be even years after!!🙁
