Tommy Cossack & The Degenerators - "AGITATOR" (2024, full album)

One of the most fascinating projects, of those we were talking about last week, that after being born as a one-man line-up during the pandemic, have become now full bands to settle definitively in our lives as a sample of the best punk made in the 2020's, is Tommy Cossack & The Degenerators. While at first the solo project of Londoner Tommy was self-catalogued as “Egg punk” or “Devocore”, a subgenre of punk that we have always promoted on this channel, I don't think at this point anyone would dare to put that label on this first album as a full band on Swish Swash Records, and much less after hearing the opening title track of this “Agitator”, which was precisely his first “hit” launched in 2020.
Vibrant, aggressive, and unleashing energy at full throttle, without losing at any time the tearing charm of LoFi, nor its deep DIY character, these 18 tracks are torn between an abrasive post-punk and a harshy Rock'n'Roll Garage, that don't seem to be taken from the British Isles vibes but from that other great island in our antipodes called Australia, which also adds some timely synthetic touches that only manage to magnify this whole hellspawn. No doubt Tommy and "his" Degenerators have manufactured a nuclear artifact that Oppenheimer himself would be proud of.

Recorded by friend of the band Ryan Tennant (Rainn Byrns, Drawl) on reel to reel in his bedroom and Mixed & Mastered by David Forcier (Civic), we encounter the first full band release on more significant gear than a Tascam Portastudio.
Agitator comes as a full force blunt trauma to the head, with lead guitar riffs and synth lines acting as the cartoon birds circling above the cortex."
