    Doesn't matter that this received zero Oscar nominations.Doesn't really matter that it wasn't a box office smash!,neither.What does matter that this film was made.This film would have lit a fire under several peoples backsides....for sure!This is a fantastic love letter as well as a wall to employ in order to keep modern junk at a very far distance.While I watched the film I felt like I hadn't lost my world.So thanks.And thanks for all the dancers(featured here) who dedicated their time to the rehearsals.YOU were a real pleasure to watch.

    They did such a great job teaching those kids how to dance and you can tell that some of hem really do feel the music. Just a shame that so much of the dance scenes ended up on the cutting room floor and the film ended up being about some lads who were heavily into drugs and just happened to do a bit of dj-ing and go to some Northern Soul venues

      @Richard Bottrell what!? No, no, no... have you heard the saying, dance like nobody's watching?" well, yeah sometimes we just need to move and get ourselves out of a funk or just have fun. In your case, you dance as if everyone is watching, because you are NS in the flesh! That is what's needed, from what I've seen of the dancers, whew, pure joy. Give them the gift of joy! Oh and of course yourself..🌈💖😘👍🏾

    • @tollyt7465
      @tollyt7465 Před 5 lety +8

      Some are Motown, but many are on small independent labels that flopped or were B sides that people never listened to before the Northern Soul DJ's from venues like The Twisted Wheel, Mecca, Torch, Wigan Casino, Cleethorpes etc imported from the US.. As an example the original recording of Tainted Love by Gloria Jones was on the B side of a flop single called "my bad boys coming home" in 1965 on the Champion label.. NS dancers loved it, she re released it in 1976, then Soft Cell released it in 1982 and it was a hit.. Many great songs like this would have been lost without the Northern Soul scene.. You can also see the evolution from NS dancing to the Bboy breakdancing scene from early videos of the great venues..

    Did the Stoke Newington NS dance club and scene continue after the hit film was made?

    • @thecut7937
      @thecut7937 Před 3 lety

      No unfortunately. Those sessions in Angel and Stoke Newington ran for 3 years and people learnt to dance by watching, and talking, listening to the music and dancing with each other. They became addicted to the music just as we did in the heyday. Friends were made and bonds that still remain today. It really was a unique monthly session that the young dancers travelled for from across the Uk. It was a club that inspired and had an unbelievable energy because many were hearing this music for the first time as we did in the 70's and it electrified them.

    • @Pulsonar
      @Pulsonar Před 3 lety

      @@thecut7937 thanks for responding, I always wondered what happened, it seemed like a great little revivalist club. I was stunned at the energy and passion of these young and keen dancers for this old genre. It’s a pity that it didn’t continue with the next generation, but I think the NS revivalist spirit kicked off in many parts of the U.K. over the last 7-8 years or so since a few NS documentaries were aired on TV and a few good film dramas about the 70s NS were released. I think a great many are still keeping the faith in their hearts if not on the dance floor 🙂

      You say there was nothing like it after Wigan but for those of us who didn't just dip our toes in for when it was in the public eye and carried on 40+ years when the scene returned underground we know how great the scene was for us and all other generations. They had the fine qualities which bore me - thrift and industry and long-faced holiness, and the young women are mostly great genteel boisterous things who are no doubt bedworthy enough if your taste runs that way. (One acquaintance of mine who had a Northern Soler's DJ daughter described it as like wrestling with a sergeant of dragoons.)
