- Learn how to convert an image into SVG using GIMP.
In order to extrude vectors into 3D models, mO2 FCPX and Apple Motion Plugin supports SVG format.
This tutorial shows how to convert your image logo into SVG using the free Gimp application.

I have been using GIMP for well over 10 years now, using it for all kinds of work. I had no idea it would allow me to export SVG! Thanks a million!
Thanks! I opened an .eps file in GIMP (2.10.8, without Ghostscript), selected the part I wanted, created a path from it, exported my path to SVG, opened my svg in an IDE and tweaked the settings.
Helped a lot! Thank You MVFX!
Thank you so much. I used this to create my new business logo into Darktable.
Thank you so much!
FF to 5:30 for path export
God, thank you...
thanks for this helpful tut.....
Very good tutoring.
work is awesome and useful, thanks brother......
Nice!
Excellent video, thanks for sharing!
💪
Is their a way to store multiple paths in one file. For example, the two color logo in the video having both the black and white paths saved as one file, or will you always have to make induvial SVG files for each color or texture used?
This was an awesome format for this information. Since it was a complete walk through and how-to rather than just a boiled down summary, I actually caught a couple other techniques in the video that I had not thought of that when playing with some images later proved very useful. I also really appreciate when a video doesn't have to be filled with social media hype and sponsorships. Don't mind them, but nice to get a break from it too :)
This video doesn't just tell you where to point and click. it also tells you why 👍👍
Could you make it 10hrs next time
10 minutes should be enough to understand it ;)
LOL!!
Solution: change the playback speed to 0.25 and watch it 15 times on loop
@@motionvfx dude you had one job
thanks bud, you just saved me a whole load of time!
You are welcome 🫡
thankx
Why when I take a solid object like a skill white skull black background, or I switch the two colors or even use a alpha background I only get a wire frame of the object not a solid object I even selected the object and inverted my selection I still only ever get a outline of the picture ?
Hi Jack - feel free to send us details via chat - mvfx.co/Chat
impressive!
Final Cut? Using Gimp on Linux. It looks like I can create the SVG file by printing the file to a file and selecting SVG type. However, it looks like the image size is the page size? Any ideas?
When i exported the image lost its colors and just the lines stayed...
What did i do wrong?
solved?
Best GIMP tutorial I've seen yet.
How do you change the text into a vector format for commercial printing?
This is one of the most well-presented videos on GIMP. Good job!
It's a pity you do not specialize in GIMP tutorials.
yep every other gimp tutorial has glowing holes in explanations. This video doesn't just tell you where to point and click. it tells you why 👍👍
So how do you export the paths as an .svg from GIMP? I have GIMP, but it doesn't even have an .svg extension as an option for exporting. I'm so confused right now.
You just type in .SVG after you choose the name of the file. So - GIMP.SVG then save
That's one of GIMP's many quirks; You have to explicitly chose "Export as..." from the File Menu and then manually type the desired file type extension (i.e. *.svg) after the filename. It's not like a lot of other software dialogs like that. I frequently and doing similar within GIMP since 2.10's much improved native PDF handling.
@@MuckingMunt Not for me though, it says .svg is not a known file extension and I should choose one from their list.
@@afelers This took some time for me to figure out as well. It doesn't work from the File menu. Once you have saved the path, that path should appear in the far right hand column. Right click on that icon, and you'll get a menu where you can export the path as an .SVG.
@@douglaspatton2730 This whole video should be what you just said. ie. How to actually save a file as an SVG in Gimp!
wow, even at 4K resolution, I can't read the program lettering. Did you downres or something before uploading?
Very nice tutorial thank you
thanks
That's all well and good, but how do you live with only 1 mouse button?
Yes, And if It exports as only "File" instead of SVG file. Just save as Image.SVG so it can save as SVG. it dosnt give me the option to select SVG for export. so you have to write .SVG so it can export to SVG
literally a home depot training video.
how to add points when adjusting the Paths?
Kind of confused as to what a vector and SVG are. My friend said it'd be used to make logos and posters and stuff, but why would regular GIMP photoshop not work for that? He explained that the pixels would only expand so far before losing quality, but he didn't mention anything about final cut pro. Are vector techniques mainly useful for Final cut pro type programs? When making shirts, or posters, wouldn't normal GIMP photoshop suffice?
Vectors are curver which are not resolution dependent and there's a constant amount of pixels which can be used in following resolution. Curves can be scalable, pixels not (they will get blurred).
@@motionvfx But you can increase the size of a pixel photo and it looks just as good, until it eventually gets to a point where you start noticing the pixels
@@chrismaki5456 Thats the point... vector graphics dont blur.
Tried this and it just exported the outline and lost all of the colours
same did u figure out how to do it?
@@PrinceRichi I ended up just using ImageMagick instead
I don't have a Mac I have a window so the keys wouldn't make sense for me
Is there a way to have the svg files displayed in a browser with full color?
Do you have mO2's Library in mind? If so, then first, please keep in mind that you do not import SVGs into mO2's library - you can only make the plugin load and extrude them within the mO2 scene. As for the colors - we're afraid that, when importing the SVG, mO2 disregards its color information. If we didn't answer your question, could you please send some more details via chat on our website? mvfx.co/motionVFX - thanks!
My favourite part was when you didnt show how to export to SVG
this whole svg stuff is so confusing, even I'm struggling with it, not to mention there are surprisingly not that many tutorials online that are straight forward with understanding how to do this
New update time to learn again.... I hate that about updates. I only use gimp to do this one thing and they fuck it up after update.....
I don't have cmd button in my keyboard
its same as ctrl button. cmd for mac users.
Select PAAAAATH
I think that people that owns an Apple computer, make dificult tutorials if they talk about shortcuts only they can use, and now I have to leave this video to go and check what the fucking shortcut is in any other OS
lmao
I'm pretty sure a bot made this tutorial
waste of time and is not a normal svg as a result
