  • The Aurora Borealis, and the Aurora Australis, are the most incredible weather events on Earth. With a big enough Plasma globe, you can perfectly mimic the process, right on your kitchen table. In this video I demonstrate how a large plasma globe can be used to model the Northern Lights.
    Here is where I got the wands and globes! auroraplasmadesign.com/ Aurora took the time to help me understand some of the science in this video, so they deserve some love!

    Hey Plasma Fam, The wands and globes came from auroraplasmadesign.com and it's a cool company. This video involved a lot of research, which, they helped with . I spoke to the owners of two prestigious plasma globe companies, and read at least a dozen university studies on the topic. The EXACT science behind streamer formation and behavior inside of plasma globes is an evolving science, and we don't have all the answers yet. I tried my best to present information that is accurate - most - of the time for Plasma globe situations. In reality, changing pressure inside the globe can drastically change the colors seen, even if you dont change the gas type.

      Great video Jay, you certainly did your research for that one. The Northern lights are beautiful, I’ve only seen them once in the U.K. on a cold clear January night; albeit not at the magnitude you’d see in northern Finland. Epic Plasma ball, everyone will want one now. P.S. my iron/nickel Meteorite collection is growing, thanks to you. Keep safe Jay. Rog. 👍😎💯

    On our flight back from South Korea I had the opportunity to watch the aurora from the airplane as we flew over Alaska. It was so bright it illuminated the clouds beneath us with a faint green light and it was bright enough to read through the window. I put my blanket up around me and over the window to block out all the cabin light and my wife and I watched the aurora for a good 2 hours.

  • @Zenodilodon
    @Zenodilodon Před 3 lety +2

    I once saw the northern lights. The color was absolutely amazing, but the most indescribable thing was the size, it's HUGE! I like that you covered not only the gs mixture, but the electric field and the pressure effecting the colors. In gas lasers you can get various colors from gasses depending on these. This is why ion and other gas lasers can come in many wavelengths. An interesting experiment you can do is to view a simple neon lamp through a prism. As the current goes up you'll notice more and more colors start to form closer to the violet end of the spectrum. Understanding the way color comes from gasses is tricky and it wasn't until I got into gas lasers that I understood it I suggest that for reading material as it's incredibly informative.

    I watched this on my break at work yesterday at 2:30 in the morning. (Night crew) And this is just an amazing topic. The detail you put into the explanation such as the colors relating to the gases, energy levels and translating that to the upper atmosphere. Where we have elevation as a factor, and where you talk about the higher intensities such as the red colors.
    The part where you showed your reaction when you got it is me whenever I get really really cool things in the mail or when I make something like a compressed air fusion chamber. (Made one before and it is so cool. Of course dangerous due to the radiation but safe conditions can be made when using radiation glass. Or yellow glass)
    My questions I would have would be that I've seen blue and purple high voltage arcs as well as yellow or white high voltage arcs. At the elevation I'm at (5,600 feet from sea level) when using NST's, high voltage drivers or other high voltage transformers I see all of those colors. I think making a video on this phenomena would be awesome. I know it's due to temperature relating to the energy density of the plasma channel made, though I know a few people who wouldnt know this. I think making a video showing what you showed in this one and then showing that you can have different colors depending on the energy level as well would be an awesome idea.
    I loved the video and how you gave detailed explanations. I also loved how you asked the question about why the colors changed in the plasma globe and then answered it. Great way to teach and even better way to learn. :) Keep it up, I know I saw this a lot, but I mean it.
    Got tonight off of work so staying home and catching up on videos in my playlist. :)

    I've even made a few plasma pickle jars many years ago. It doesn't take an expensive vacuum pump. I'd drill a small hole in the lid and place a strip of vinyl electrical tape loosely over the hole. I used a PVC end cap and rubber gasket to connect to the pump. I was surprised that the vacuum held for many months.

    There are other aurora plasma, design-based gloves. I have different colors to mix with colors happen different lamps use different gases into different amounts, but they’re almost always noble gases in French and grinning place up to your eye for your plasma. Globe is nearby is ideal for analyzing its color spectrum

    Hi Jay... I have 8" globe that has the centre electrode low down in the globe, it is actually in the neck of the globe which gives me the effect of your giant globe... I can get 8" streams from the electrode. I can see those variations of colour along the length of the streams.... It is very cool...... Thank you for another very cool video. I'll try to send a video sample to you.

    Yeah on a clear night you can sometimes see the northern lights here in Scotland. They are beautiful and the scale of the flares are so immense. Photo's and video's don't do it any justice at all, you have to see them with your own eyes to appreciate it's beauty.

      Scotland? Talk about a beautiful country. I've wanted to visit there for some time, and almost did a marathon there. Then....the Mexican beer wrecked planet Earth. It's my hope to make it there next year! What city are you in?

  • @foxpup

    I'm saving up to get one of these. I also plan to make a corner for it and paint the corner as black as I can with regular paint and then apply Black 2.0 to make it absolutely pitch dark as an environment for this plasma globe. That should make the colors pop even more. Black 2.0 isn't cheap but it's not prohibitively expensive and I should get good coverage with even just one can if I fully prime it with regular matte black paint first...Should be worth it, but that's just me planning....haven't done it yet. :-)
