Mallard On The Mainline - Part 2

- 1988 was the 50th anniversary of Mallard's record breaking run and she was restored to run several railtours on the main line. In these two clips she was unfortunately (for me) being filmed from the air. The first was the 'Pennine Postal' on 10th.May seen near Mossley on the climb to Standedge and the second shot later in 1988, exact date unknown, on the Settle & Carlisle at Blea Moor. As you might imagine one or two angry signs and fists were aimed in the helicopters direction. I think the pilot was later fined for flying too low. Originally shot on VHS-C, so not brilliant quality.

I was aged only 1 at this time, and I think already had fallen in love with this engine!
I regret I never got to see it running.
Bloody helicopter! Thanks for sharing some great memories of a great loco.
Thanks Chris, yes, as you say it is a nice record of her short time on the mainline in 1988 despite the helicopter. We can certainly live without them on future tours.
Thanks very much, glad you enjoyed it. In part one of my two Mallard videos, the train I was travelling on returned to York via Newcastle. I did take some footage around Newcastle but it was a bit shaky to include in the video
Nice to see (and hear!) her out on the big railway. Important record as I doubt it will happen again (but happy to be proven wrong). Had the same problem with a Princess Elizabeth trip two or three years ago. At least you can still hear Mallard make a fair attempt at the restart. Thanks again for sharing Austin. Chris
Another enjoyable video, keep up the great work.
Thanks for that info, that's' very helpful as I have lost a lot of my records from that time.
Thats a nice thought Andy, what a great sight it would be.
Thanks, glad you like them.
Oh yes....great videos by the way!
Many thanks for your response. Shame about the footage. My Dad is approaching his 80th birthday. As a surprise present for him, I am compiling a steam & diesel DVD featuring him and some of his former firemen; some are still driving including Chris Cubitt who regularly drives the Scarborough Spa Express and Jim Smith who drove Tornado on the run featured on Top Gear. However so far I have been unable to get anything on the Mallard run from Newcastle to Middlesbrough, returning to York.
David
Cheers, certainly was a pain but I think you can just about hear Mallard!!!
I have seen them Austin and still have them in my collection somewhere. If you remember the classic film of Flying Scotsman's run up the East Coast Main Line in the 1970's then that wouldn't have been possible without the ariel shots..Glad it's not done these days...Bob
Yes, the train was called the Pennine Postal and if I remember rightly commemorated an anniversary of some kind relating to the Post Office.
Thank you, I will certainly keep trying!
Thanks, that helicopter upset a few people on the day. I think the pilot was later fined for flying too low
Very enjoyable same as part 1. I wonder if the Blea Moor signalman kept the home signal at stop deliberately, it certainly made for better viewing.
Hi acw thanks for the reply, yes I have been watching videos of Bittern and Nigel Gresley and the union of SA all lovely looking loco's but Mallard is my favourite. I hope the money can be raised to fix her up and see her running again soon, I certainly would dontate.
Oh does this bring back memories of that time Austin. A rocket laucher was the only answer, it ruined it for linesiders and people on the train. Had the same thing whilst filming on the Central Wales line and found myself looking down on a helicopter, he was also fined!..5* ..Bob
She was in poor condition in 1988 when she returned to the mainline. The National Railway Museum don't see her being restored again, but who knows? There are 3 other working A4's at present though.
Austin, Is this the same bit of film being Linked to on the Daily mail website this evening ? They have a decent and surprisingly well researched article on the return of the two A4's to the UK this week. It certainly looks like your film that they are linking to.
Yes, it is indeed. I had a message from them yesterday asking for permission to use the footage in their article. As you say it was a pretty decent report about the return of the A4's
what a sight it would be to see her on the main again.
hauling some lner teaks!
Thanks very much, yes the helicopter problem has not been bad of late...now, who's this Andy guy...I'm an Austin!!
Great video acw1000. On the second run she returned to York via Newcastle. Do you have any footage of that last leg from Newcastle - my father (Harold Clark) was the driver with his fireman Jimmy Hughes.
"Flying too low?" Looks like he almost landed the damn thing at Blea Moor!
He upset a lot of people I can assure you, thanks for your comments
Bet she looked good from the air, those of us on the ground were cursing that helicopter though!
We were a bit more inhibited in the 80's!
Well you have to call yourself something, acw represents my initials and yes, the Duke is a special favourite.
Sorry if its an innuendo.
Great Video, but to the man with the giant chopper in the air, put it away! We want to see more of the engine.
I think if he had he might have been set upon by us enthusiasts!!
I think I must have broken several mirrors for it to happen twice to me. Funny, but I don't remember seeing any of the films or photo's taken from the air.
Looks as if the signal wire was jamming on something (ballast?) and the signalman was rather grumpily freeing it up.
I think he had come from the signalbox, you can just make him out holding out a flag to Mallard I think. For some reason they were using hand signalling to call the train forward although the semaphore appeared to be working. Its so long ago now I don't remember the exact circumstances I'm afraid.
Still, wouldn't mind having a house on the moors. Vacation-style house maybe.
Hunt grouse (if they allow it) and watch steam trains. Heaven on Earth!
Yes, possibly something like that. I'm afraid I don't remember the exact reason for him coming out
Cold and windy up on those moors I bet!
If you like David I can send you a DVD of all my Mallard footage including the Newcastle section so you could incorporate it in your DVD. Quality would be a bit better than on CZcams but its still only standard VHS. Send me a PM if interested.
has it a travelling post office behind her in the first shot
It sure is most of the time and especially when steam is running!!
Excellent vids Andy, shame about the idiot chopper pilot! I too heard that he was later fined, jolly good if so. I noticed that the news helicopter filming "Tornado" at its naming ceremony last year was kept very much in its place, maybe things have improved a bit?
Well, you never know, one day it could happen again if the money is available
Hi acw71000 I am a steam lover which is unusual for a woman, I adore the Mallard train, so what exactly is wrong with her? Can a petition be raised to restore her? I certainly would donate money.. I have only recently joined CZcams so havent seen what has been written about her. If Scottie can be restored why cant the Mallard?
why are you called 71000 is that because you like duke of gloucester train? just curious
Oh, you can sort that easily, get some steam sounds on your MP3 or I Pod !
I cannot understand what the chap was doing on the rails? before he walked off not even giving a glance at Mallard as it passed him.I found his behaviour quite strange?
Believe me, if any enthusiasts out had had a gun they might have tried!I
She is a coal burner, probably the blue tone is due to converting the video from the old VHS
I wouldn't say blood, I'd say f.........g helicopter.
does she burn coal or oil???????...that smoke looks blue.
