If you put up low tunnels on them before the frost do you think they would have made it or still no?
Yes they would have made it. The same arctic blast hit us here in East Tennessee it got 4 and 5 degrees those nights and I covered my brassicas with Everything I could find most made it through
I was thinking frost cloth too. I've put shade cloth up like a canopy here on east cost lost the ends n things were stunted but I got a lil.
You can also remove the larger outer leaves and let the smaller inside ones get some warm sun. A few may still survive!

Same. I had to install 50% shade cloth and that has saved some of my plants. At least, I'll order more for next summer so I won't lose anything.

Doing a great job with that and you and Nancy are a great team. How large is your garden there in Florida? Your harvest is a testament to the fact that you cannot out give God. I know the feeling of losing a crop. I'm in Georgia, and this past spring, my backyard garden was nearly completely destroyed in one day by a hail and wind storm. Even blew my neighbor's greenhouse over into my backyard and rolled over all my tomatoes. However, my onions and garlic that were planted in the fall survived that same freeze that took out your cauliflower. We can take a lesson from the ants and bees. When their homes are damaged by mother nature, they simply rebuild and carry on. We'll do the same and thank the Lord for the opportunity.

You can just cover them. Blankets, storage bins, anything will do. Giant storage bins are my favorite and I live in Maryland, works great
I love watching your videos. My husband loves to garden. I am so disappointed that the cauliflower crop did not survive. It's sad that you put in so much effort and it did not work out this time. I guess that all comes with gardening. Weather makes all the difference.

It was really cold this year. I am 9a FL and I managed to get mine to survive in raised beds with light bulbs, and sheets and blankets! Always a pleasure to watch your videos. Love to Bing Bing🥰

I'm way up here in zone 5B my friend and this year was brutal we had 2 late frosts and then a pounding of rain lost the first crops had to plant a second hopefully there'll be enough time,I guess we'll see!

So sorry. I'm in 9A northern Florida and that Merry Christmas freeze killed anything semi tropical in my garden. However the brassicas and lettuce, though they froze solid, did fine! Citrus trees OK though any fruit left on the trees was ruined. I'm thinking my yard is more protected than your open fields, not as far inland, so we did a little better. To my pleasant surprise, the cumfrey, longevity spinach, pigeon peas morenga, and some others came back eventually. Life can be tenacious.
How are you keeping the insects off of the seedlings

We are in North Louisiana zone 8a. We live in a neighborhood that would be considered Urban except it's a dead end surrounded by mixed hardwoods. My husband grows our vegetables. I used to be able to help him but for physical ailments now. You're very lucky to have nancy! I'm glad to be able to at least channel her in the kitchen!
Most of all, I am going to share this video with my husband and not tell him about the ending. Because I want him to see that in spite of all of the financial outlay, and especially the physical outlay, it happens to the very very best of the Lord's children. But it's all the more reason to keep trying :-) God bless the both of you and Bing Bing as well!

First video I have seen put out by you. I am fixing to start my fall garden seeds within a couple of weeks, hopefully. I am in Texas and the heat has just about killed everything but weeds. Lol.

Boy oh boy if I will remember! Was my first time growing cabbage by seed and they're doing so good to ! And in 3 day's toke them all . Life of a gardener .. unpredictable.

I love being in the garden!! I live in West Central Ohio so we have a few months off in the winter but the whole couple months that we have off I spend that entire time reading and watching videos and planning for the next season! Thats truly heart breaking. All that work and time spent putting into the garden and all in just a few harsh days, Gone. I feel bad for ya'll, but then again it goes to show that God is truly at work and it's his WILL that needs to be done. Not ours. There's probably a lesson to learn from this, and even though we may not understand it right now, in God's time it will be revealed. Hope ya'll have a blessed day and look forward to more videos. We had the same Attic frost in 2022 Christmas weeks in Houston, TX. Lots of plants and vegetables were damaged.
I'm in ne Bama... Did what i could, covering with frost cover and blankets. It was too much. Not doing a fall garden this year. Without a green house it'll be even harder in the days to come. Colder winters and hotter summers.

So sorry this happened. We have had a terribly wet summer here, and thousands of white butterflies, and their grubs ate their way through all my brassicas! Getting lots of winter hardy kale in now. Would a fleece cover have saved your cauliflowers? Good luck, and keep on gardening!

I lost my entire market garden last winter to that artic blast here in South Carolina. My broccoli/cauliflower was just starting to head when it hit. I lost around $4,000 dollars worth of produce. I am planting earlier this year. I bought a grow light system and I've got about 500 broccoli/cauliflower going atm. YEEHAW. God always makes up for it, so this year I had a bumper crop of pumpkins. They came early, but I think they will hold till October. Probably got a few thousand $ worth of pumpkins.

Aww it’s heartbreaking to see this but gardening is so unpredictable sometimes. I live in Northern California so we don’t extreme bad weather but we had gopher problem last year and it took out most of my onions last year.
You could have covered them with row cover

That's such a shame. I'm so used to seeing you with heat out there that it doesn't compute that you'd get hit with our level of cold. We had the same temps here in Yorkshire, but my brassicas are a little more protected, which I guess is what helps. Mind you, I lost many of mine this year that weren't covered to the pigeons. There's always something! I look forward to part two as I have this seed to try. It replaces Graffiti, which is lovely, but difficult, and expensive to get hold of here.
I'm a little farther south than you are but went through the same freeze. I managed to cover everything with frost cover, sheets and solo cups. We still lost some but saved the majority of it. I guess this past spring was the last full garden that I will do getting too old for all that tilling but will still do some container stuff. I have really enjoyed your videos over the years and learned a lot from you. God Bless

So sorry that happened to you.
Oh man. This is exactly what happened to my entire garden last December here in east Texas. We got down to 16 and lower with wind chill. It was just too cold for all my plants with one exception: garlic. My garlic carried on like champs and I ended up with a fairly decent harvest (100 heads!) later in May and June. That was my silver lining in that situation. I was most saddened to lose my avocado, lemon and lime trees even though they were covered (so was the rest of my garden but it just wasn’t enough). 🤷🏻♀️It’s the way things go sometimes. I took it as an opportunity to really amend and work on my garden soil and add my own homemade compost and my goodness my garden was fruitful this spring for it! I grew my first cauliflower plants ever (even though they were separating because it got hot quickly). I harvested 4 heads when I planted 12 but the rest are starting to head up now of all times! I’m going to let them. I have the space so why not? If they go to seed that’s ok too. ☺️ I am going to seed start new brassicas in September for a fall crop and try again like Hollis and Nancy. 👍🏻 We have similar climate conditions. I hope it works out!

Hello again folks, didn't see you for few weeks, anyways, i am from Toronto Canada, when can i plant cauliflower and broccoli. Thanks. Stay blessed always.
We are in Maine, so it gets cold here. Best advice is find your average first
frost date, and look at the days to maturity of the plants you want to grow.
Count back from your frost date the number maturity and add a couple weeks.
Then cross your fingers and have some frost cover at the ready.
Keep in mind, many varieties do not germinate well in the heat, so look for ones
that do well all season. The days are also getting shorter July on. so you may
want to still start your plants indoors and transplant established plants.

I think everyone in the south lost their fall/winter crops, I know everyone around me did and some good ole Georgia folks that I follow on YT showed their decimated garden from the artic blast. I managed to save some of mine with frost covers but lost a lot of it.
I’m surprised you did all that work and you did not take time to cover them with row cover road cover is strong enough Even snow will not damage them the Plant
no you did not take the time for a couple days to protect all the work you put into your plans sorry but that of you I’m in you 81 years old and I keep cover on my plants when the temperature goes down to 40 at night I live in New York
We had 3 days with temps in the low 20s never getting above freezing. We have covered plants before for occasional frost and light freezes but the covers did not work for severe long term hard freezes. When I see temps that low for that long I know the plants will not survive even with covers so I don’t even bother with it. I accept the loss and move on.

curious, if we KNOW there are freezes coming - cant we put on some protection over them ???
Cauliflower and broccoli can tolerate light frost and even survive a bit of snow. Although the freeze might damage the heads (floret) making it less appealing. There are some variety that is labeled as "self blanching", meaning the leaves grows around the head by itself protecting it without needing you to tie the leaves yourself.
If its just a light frost, you can use garden frost cloth and cover the plants. You want to get frost cloth that has rating of 1oz+ per square meter, meaning it's thicker. If it gets even colder into the lower 20s range, unless you have a hoop house or greenhouse, you will need a low tunnel and use greenhouse plastic as cover. You can easily setup a low tunnel using 10ft half inch PVC pipes sold at hardware store. With greenhouse plastic as cover, when it's sunny sky and the day time temperature gets above 65-70*F you have to vent your tunnel to allow air flow or it can get too hot inside and burn the leaves.
Oh, sad, to lose so much. I wonder if you had run your sprinkle overnight would it have helped.
i started my garden last yr and still cant grow cauliflower or broccoli i have watched ur videos a dozen times and i use blackcow dirt and i put in the bone meal and blood meal like u helpppppp i live in ky

small garden, but to lose everything in a garden your size would be just devastating.

Why didn't you cover them with frost cloth? I'm in Illinois, and I have over-wintered brassicas in temps down to zero. Those cauliflower would have survived with frost cloth. What a waste of resources and time.
