    push back in if they have worked loose and have also found a big difference as you said in weak signal areas with the roof mount aerial.

    Thanks for all the info on mobile internet it’s been very useful. On a fibre glass conventional Motorhome do you think external aerials are important?

    • @ExploreVanUK
      @ExploreVanUK  Před 10 měsíci +1

      If the roof is fibre glass it won’t impact the signal as much as a steel van / aluminium clad motorhome if you can mount your router up in the fibreglass area.
      However external antennas tent have high “gain” compared to antennas on routers as well as being able to be mounted outside so there is still Lilly to be a benefit of using external antennas just not as much as if it were a fully metal van / motorhome.

    • @ExploreVanUK
      @ExploreVanUK  Před 8 měsíci

      Glad it's useful! - Teltonika routers have external connections for WiFi antennas as well as LTE. As they also have the facility to receive and rebroadcast WiFi hotspots the MiMo3 enables you to connect to these and then to hotspots further away and create a better WiFi connection around it.

    Good summary. I have a dual sim router but only one sim in. I can't find a decent PAYG contact that I could use alongside my unlimited Giff Gaff deal. With one sim, will it use the 4 external antenna I have to boost the signal or only two of the 4? Something to note is the increased power consumption of the commercial routers. I've noticed a significant increase in power use over my old Huawei mifi model with an internal battery, and the commercial needs power to be always on to work.

    • @ExploreVanUK
      @ExploreVanUK  Před 10 měsíci

      Hi - it would be good to know the model of your router to tell if it is a Dual SIM or Dual Modem device.
      Assuming the model you have has 4x4 Mimo connections (which it sounds like it does) it is probably at least Cat12. Therefore the 4 antenna connections will work on one SIM to help perform Carrier Aggregation, merging multiple bands together even from the same network.
      Power consumption is a good point, however, we've not seen a huge difference over a period of time. In our experience he commercial routers do vary their power needs quite a lot depending on what activity is being done, so sometimes (particularly at night when not in active use, it has very low power demands despite still maintaining the network).
      Battery powered devices tend to flatten the power profile with a consistent drain 24 hours a day to keep the internal battery topped up.

    HI, I have used your recommendations to setup my van router and antenna and they work really well. For data I use Smarty. I am about to change my phone and would like to use the EE network if possible, so that this will compliment the van system. Which of the operators using the EE network would you recommend as good value for money? EE looks more expensive than 3 in general so if I can't find a reasonable option will stay with Smarty for the phone as well. I am likely to go abroad next year and so a good policy for longer spells in Europe would be very helpful

      @@ExploreVanUK HI, following this advise I brought an rwg sim and have been using it. They say it works with both EE and 3, and will connect to whichever network is best. They also say that you can force it to connect to one or another. It might be an interesting video to explain how to get the best from the network and to see whether the auto switching works or whether sometimes its best to manually select the network, and if so the best way to do it. Thanks again for the advice.

    Great video. What about Starlink as an option for the future on a new campervan build?

    • @ExploreVanUK
      @ExploreVanUK  Před 2 měsíci

      Its a great choice if you need near constant high speed connection but the monthly cost is high and it does have some limitations.
      We use the internet year round so with Starlink that would cost £1020. With our Unlimited Smarty SIM it costs us £216 so we take the compromise and just have to make sure were in an area with good coverage if we need to do something that needs high speed.
      There are a couple of considerations with Starlink - As standard it only runs on 240v so you either need to modify it to 12v or run an inverter constantly for it.
      As standard it doesn;t have ethernet connections so you need to add a ethernet adapter - around £50 if you want a wired connection.
      You need a clear view of the sky so parking under trees or with too many building obstructions can cause performance reduction or no connection at all.
      The kids use our 4G/5G connection as we are actually driving to stream / play games, this wouldn't be possible with the standard Starlink and needs their mobility package which was $2000 for hardware and $250 a month last time I looked. I;m also not sure if it is available outside the US.
      Hope that helps

    Many of the poynting antenna’s don’t seem to cover three’s and voda’s band 32 (1800mhz). I recall you liking both mimo 3 and smarty as a combo.. how often have you found band 32 an issue in the uk? (Before I buy either a puck 2 or mimo 3… thanks!

    • @ExploreVanUK
      @ExploreVanUK  Před 9 měsíci +1

      Hi I think you may mean 1400 mhz as that is Band 32.
      The Mimo3 operates from 698 to 2700 MHz band, as well as the 450 MHz band.
      The Poynting Puck covers 617 to 4200 MHz band.
      So both would cover Band 32 1400Mhz
      It’s worth noting Band 32 is only used in very high traffic areas as an addition to other bands as it is down link only.
      The spectrum can only be used when aggregated with a primary carrier that has an uplink.

    Hi - love your channel and have followed your advice for the following: '3' 4G+ Router and a SMARTY Data only SIM. Having spent an hour with the SMARTY help desk I am no nearer getting the router to come online. The "Internet" and LTE lights remain stubbornly red. The help guy was trying to help me change the APN settings, but I cannot access the router dashboard to do it. Very frustrating. He told me to contact the manufacturer. When you did it on the video it was so fast!! What am I missing? Thanks! Mike

    • @ExploreVanUK
      @ExploreVanUK  Před 10 měsíci

      Hi, unfortunately the 3 Router you cannot change the APN - however as it appears to be permanently set for the 3 network then we had no problems using a SMARTY sim.
      Have you tried the SIM in another device? eg your phone. tTat is a good way to determine if it is a fault with the sim. Also make sure you have installed the sim the correct way around and fully into the slot.
      You should be able to access the admin page via web browser using address 192.168.1.254 and the login and password on the back of the router. Once you are able to see that it will give you more information as to why it isn't connecting eg SIM FAULT, NO CONNECTION etc
      You could also try the Three 4G+ Hub app as a way to access the status.
      If you bought it second hand it's possible it has had the admin password changed so it is worth doing a full reset of the router first by putting a pin in the reset hole (if I remember rightly for 20 seconds)
      Just to check you are trying to set it up initially in the UK? as the SIM will need to connect to the UK network first.
      Hope that helps!

      @@ExploreVanUK Thank you for your help! Yes, I'm in Bournemouth. I have done a full reset and believe it or not the instructions that came with the router (new) show the wrong direction for inserting the SIM! 🤣Unbelievable! Most SIM slots will only allow the card to go in one way - this goes in any way you try it which is disconcerting to say the least. I finally got a very weak signal and a pathetic download speed even with a roof-mounted MIMO antenna. But... I live by the sea with no masts (to the south) until France, so I need to go inland a bit and try again. Thanks for your advice and fingers crossed. 🤞

      Hi Andy, our goto is a Teltonika RUT955 and a Poynting MiMo3 antenna as for us that gives us good coverage and plenty of flexibility to play with the settings. We don’t need super high speeds so a good stable connection is more important.
      As you can see we get the chance to have a good play with other options quite regularly too.

      They can have one when they stop messing around with their prices and get competitive ;-). One week its £100 for equipment the next its £400+
      A great choice for some that speed and ability to connect anywhere is essential but still a lot of money currently.
