  • Was driving through Germany on the Autobahn for the first time so after driving several km unlimited I thought it would be cool to capture the experience in video.
    I pulled over, set the cam and headed out again hoping to get a log at vmax and...
    ...2mins after it became limited again :D
    You can listen my opinion about it on the video - oh, well...
    There is another unprocessed yet video but no logs on that one cause I needed the phone to handle the navigation.
    Car:
    - Saab 9-3 Aero SC -- 2.8V6 T, everything stock (250BHP)
    Video/Data capture:
    - Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ10 (Video and audio)
    - Samsung Galaxy S2 (GPS and OBDII using ALapRecorder application)
    - OBDlink MX (OBD data)
    - ALapRecorder HD for generating overlay graphs
    Date/time:
    - 28.06.2012 at 0920
    - 223km/h top speed

      No you can't. Going 130 on one of the middle or even the left lane is OFFENSIVE!
      Exceptions are heavy traffic, bad weather conditions or whatever actually forces you to go that slow.

    I hate it when people think that the rule to drive in the right lane doesn't apply when they are driving fast, like e.g. 180 or 200+ km/h. It doesn't metter if your are driving fast and that there's maybe no-one behind you...

    • @EnjoyFirefighting
      @EnjoyFirefighting Před 10 lety +10

      trident3b there are such big spaces in between the vehicle on the right lane here in the video that it wouldn't be weaving in and out, wouldn't have been dangerours moving over at after passing the van at 0:55; and even if you keep in the left lane for a longer period of time, there's still always that one idiot pulling out in front of you

    • @MaxiKingK
      @MaxiKingK Před 9 lety +5

      trident3b Your understand it wrong. The "ermessen" in the Rule of "Rechtsfahrgebot" is not for the Situation of fast driving. You were only 220, i suspect your car is locked at 250. Some people drive 350+ on the Autobahn, you would possibly block them before you even noticed them.
      You were 20 seconds in the left lane without overtaking. After 12 seconds you can get a fine about ~80€, more if you really blocked someone. (+1 Point for German drivers) Police is using civil cars with 200-300hp

    • @MaxiKingK
      @MaxiKingK Před 9 lety +4

      trident3b Okay yes, the 350+ example is quite bad.. but the driver in the Video was definitely braking the Rechtsfahrgebot. No Diskussion about that, the Mittelspurmythos is only about 6-lane Autobahn. He wasnt so fast that it would have been dangerous to change lanes. Even at 300+ it wouldnt.
      All Autobahn Police Cars can go 250, some up to 270. They use cameras in zivil cars. In my state NRW there are about 30 ProVida cars in use daily.
      I dont have have my license for so long as you, but as an former paramedic the Autobahn was part of my workplace. So i knew a bit about it ;)

    To all the people out there that don't know (Let the German explain it to the world :)
    It's wrong to say that there is no speed limit on the German Autobahn. And I'm not talking about the many sections with a clearly marked speed limit. It's because even when there is no general speed limit on some parts of the Autobahn that doesn't mean that there is no speed limit at all.
    You are always by law supposed to adjust the speed to the situation on the road (traffic, weather, run of the curve etc.). And there is an official recommended speed limit (Autobahnrichtgeschwindigkeit) of 130 km/h ( about 82 mph)
    That's because traffic rule number 1 says you officially are not allowed to endanger traffic safety. That means e.g. if you go speeding on a rainy day and then cause an accident because you lose control of the car, or even just cant reduce the speed and crash into a car ahead (you are always considered guilty if you crash into the car ahead since you are supposed to maintain a safe distance to the car ahead), you will be sentenced (fine or jail time).
    The Autobahn was designed for safely speeding at 80 - 90 mph and sometimes a bit more with not too much traffic. That requires disciplined, focused and rather considerate drivers.
    And that's the problem.

    • @STho205
      @STho205 Před 7 lety

      cynust100. Well said. Interstate highways in the US (and Canada) are likewise designed to support rural traffic at 130KmPH 80-90MPH, though safety lobbies have muscled lower limits. The less nanny state states have higher limits, while other states have 60mph (100k). Most of our states set it at 70mph and ignore anyone driving safely below 76 (120kmph).
      My dad was a highway design engineer 1949 - 1990 and was a guest engineer in Germany also. He said both highways were built similarly from a practical standard. Drivers just evolved differently.

      Sooooooooo true. It's because we practically hand out licenses here. Most driving tests don't even require you to get on the highway. The only accidents I've ever been in during the 25 years I've been driving have been getting rear ended in traffic at a dead stop, which is now the reason I have a front and back dash cam. Integrity amongst driver's also seems to be a problem when you get into an accident. It's never their fault....even when they plow into the back of a car at 35 mph that is sitting at a red light because their cell phone was more important than paying attention to guiding a two ton missile.

      Benzo Gross. Have you experienced massively potholed Interstate highways in the US. I haven't. I just drove back from Mobile, through Atlanta and on to North Georgia. The roadways looked just like this, except with a larger shoulder on the left side, better raised reflective marking and the right shoulder groved. They are forty five years old and well maintained. Even the scenery looked similar for most of the 400miles\644Km except we have a lot of pines on the hillsides.
      On that stretch I drive 120KmPH as most do, but if I brought it up to 200+, the ride would be smooth.

    No speed limit does not mean that you have to go as fast as possible. Many germans are really relaxed right lane drivers even when they sit in fast cars and thats what I say is cool on the german Autobahn. A speed difference of about 70-80mph between two lanes is nowhere safe. So... stay cool and relaxed when the no limit sign shows up. A common German driver.

  • @XXyyQQww

    What you do in this video is ILLEGAL. I am German, I drive the Autobahn every day to work. Speed limit does exist folks!!!!! Why do so many people think there is no speed limit in Germany?! Just wrong!! Anyway, the speed limit is mostly 100km/h, sometimes 120km/h at the Autobahn. Really rare is 130km/h. But that's it. Anything above the speed limit (which is inscribed on a round sign with a red circle and the number in it) is AGAINST THE LAW. Drive carefully guys! And always remember: the rule of keeping to right side of the road. On the left lane one normally drives the allowed speed (and illegally much above) and on the right lane one drives when they cannot or do not want to drive the set speed limit (trucks, big vehicles, ... and anyone who respects the law and is not in a hurry or angry.. (in my opinion))

      Es gibt keine reguläre Geschwindigkeitsbegrenzung auf deutschen Autobahnen, lediglich eine Richtgeschwindigkeit. Auf bestimmten Abschnitten gibt es ein Tempolimit, aber ansonsten kann man so schnell fahren, wie es das Auto hergibt.

      That is one kind of freedom,but it is illusory within the current context in Germany. Love you guys,but the fact is,you do not have the freedom to talk openly and honestly about how Merkel has done serious damage to your country with regards to immigration and Islam. You can do 200KPH on your autobahn and meanwhile your beautiful native women are being gang raped,stabbed,molested and abused by 3rd world primitives.Anyone who dare mention it,is called a racist and Islamaphobe. Are they free to walk around Cologne on New Years eve without being sexually assaulted? Presumably you would agree yes? That have that right yes? That freedom that you mention,yes? Where were the German men,who should have protected their womenfolk? Where were the police? Freedom? Don't think so.

    How many mph is 220 km/hr? Also, does anyone have like a "general speed" recommendation for each individual lane? Asking as a person in the US who may be staying in Germany soon.

    • @corex6109
      @corex6109 Před 2 lety

      Probably way too late already, but just in case anyone else wonders:
      220 km/h = 137 mp/h
      Typical speeds on a 3 lane Autobahn are:
      Right lane => Trucks and very slow cars @ ~90 km/h (= 56 mp/h)
      Middle lane => Typical everyday drivers @ ~130-160 km/h (= 80 - 100 mp/h)
      Left lane => Overtaking lane @ 160 km/h - 300 km/h (= 100 - 185 mp/h)
      * These speeds obviously only apply if there's not too much traffic.
      Very important: Always drive on the rightmost lane. If the Autobahn is clear and even if you're doing 200 km/h (= 125 mp/h) or more, drive on the right lane as there may (and probably will be) others who want to overtake you.
      Also very important: Only overtake on the left (i.e. go to middle lane to overtake right lane drivers and left lane to overtake middle lane drivers. Not having a speeding limit doesn't mean you can overtake people on the right. If someone doesn't give way, just use your flasher, if that persom has space he'll move to the right.

    what you describe is pretty much the legal situation in germany. if a road sign shows a speed limit of 120 kph, you need to slow down in time as you must not go any faster than 120 kph at the very moment you reach the sign. if you need to slam the brakes, that's your problem. that's why there is an advisory speed limit of 130 kph. you can go faster, but you bear the risks. if you are caught speeding, YOU can argue as much as you want. the cop/judge won't care.

    just keep a steady pace.. indeed the police might even think you are drunk or so if you don't hold you speed but.. accelerate.. lift.. accerlerate.. lift..accelerate lift.. all the time...

  • @Saawko
    @Saawko Před 11 lety

    You HAVE TO slow down before speed limit, but of course, without endangering yourself or other vehicles. You have to drive so that you never have to break hard in non-dangerous situations. So you have to adapt your ride to road conditions and traffic, so IN ANY moment, you have to be able slow down to speed limit without dangerous hard braking, and that is the point. If you have to break hard, you´r breaking traffic rules, if you pass speed limit in higher speed, you´r breaking traffic rules.

    Well I drove last year on german highways (from french border to autrian border next to Muchen) and I found it to be a nightmare.
    1. Highway surface was very poor and under renovation (it needed it) for about 1/4 of the trip withspeed limit at 60 or 80 kmh
    2. Speed limits changed constantly from 60 - 80 kmhto no limit. Sometimes in less than 5 km you may change at least 5 times of speed limit
    3. Driving in the "no limit zone" is not only frightening, it is just dangerous. I passed trucks with no one behind me at my confort speed (ca. 130 kmh) and in 10 sec. you have a car speeding like a formula 1 one behing you while you pass flashing its lights like crazy. It is not only a stress, it is rude; impolite and reckless.
    4. There are almost not rest areas on german highways. You have top exit the high way to find gas and food...
    Overall, I preferred driving in France, Austria and Slovaquia : it is much less dangerous and more "civilized".

    • @Noi5ee
      @Noi5ee Před 9 lety

      YvesD91 If you had a lot of people flashing you, you probably did something wrong (not necessary illegal but not according to how locals act on the road). Either you hugged the left lane for to long (took to long to overtake a truck) or cut people of while going into the left lane or something else, there are a few assholes who flash no matter what, but they are not all that common. I think driving and interacting on the autobahn is very different from other highway networks, and so one needs time to get used to it.

    Just to clear out any confusion:
    The part from 0:50 to 1:25 is not actually "lane blocking".
    You see, when he approached the little "hill" at 0:55 it would've been dangerous to just swap back in to the right lane since your vision is kinda blocked and there could be a slow car/truck.
    It's also rainy weather so it would've been even more dangerous if said car/truck would've popped out on the right line.
    Btw. if there is no car behind you going faster than you and you see a car/truck going slow on the right lane but is a few hundred meters infront of you you also just dont swap back in to the right lane.

    Actually you find a multitude of driver types on the Autobahn, many casual drivers just keep to the center and right lanes at medium speed. Then there are business drivers who cover large distances every week, who drive 200+ km/h but are extremely experienced and safe drivers. And, as in any country, you have the idiots who push to the limits but I think the Autobahn is best suited to accommodate such drivers because all other parameters are so predictable. That's the main point - no slow vehicles blocking the left lane, no erratic maneuvers.

If you´ll be faster than limit, you will be fined ;) Thats the rule, and police will not argue with that. The second thing is, if you are in 120 zone and there is no speed lim. sign in front of you, you can accelerate from 120 at the moment, when you pass the no limit sign, not before. I mean if you drive on the right side and you have to change sides again before you can overtake. At that speed and if there a small turn, that seems a lot more risky than just staying on the left side. The rule of leaving the left side makes more sense for people that overtake at less than 200 Kmph. There´s no fine you get if you drive at that speed on theleft

    You are absolutely right, you proceeded exactly correct. All this step on the brakes or police will fine you is nonsense. They don't put radar traps directly behind a speed limit sign, cause if they did we had hundreds of rear-end collision accidents on the Autobahn. At road works you have to be careful though, as they often put radar traps there. Drive max. 20 more than allowed and your fine won't be too high, about 30€, depends on the speed. More than 20+ will get you in trouble.

    no that´s not right. the police is only allowed to start a speed control 150-200 meters after a speed limit sign, when there wasn´t a limit before.

    This is the reason why I love to be a german.Even in the driving scool (not evry single one but the most) whe were told to go fast (mor then 130 up to 200 kmh) so that you know what you are doing and how it feels like. But in my oppinion its great fun to do this but only if you risk only your own live... I can tell you if you have to travel mre than 300 km you will not be driving all the way 200 or even 180 becaue you WILL get unconvortable. I can tell you this because I have my driving licens scince about halve a year and have done about 50.000 km

      +DesertGaming So you still have a lot to learn.
      It depends on the car. With the right car you can go over 200kph for quite a long time.

    • @niklasfuchs4463
      @niklasfuchs4463 Před 8 lety

      +DesertGaming HAHAHAHA. I wanna see you doing 50.000 Km in half a year. Trucker or what? That would mean about 300km per day. Even if we suspect your average speed at 100kmh, which is highly doubtable, you'd be on the road for 3h hours EACH DAY.
      I already drive a lot for a only 20 year old, and I've done around 50.000 km by now. And that just because I'm delivering cars to Poland/Italy/czech sometimes.

    • @Jaco2k
      @Jaco2k  Před 9 lety +1

      Chill - the rain was before I stopped, on the previous section of road. That is why the car is wet. The road, if you look closely, was only mildly damp. The driving line was mostly dry already.

    his driving was okay...used the right lane as it was empty......officially you should slow down before the 130 km/h sign, but everyone saw, that your were slowing down after the sign, and directly after a sign you will not be pulled out by the police..

      Trolling much? ;) anyway, the 2007 model was rated at 250bhp and 350nm torque. It is OK, but obviously nothing special. Later versions of the same engine were tuned to put out a lot more power. Even my own engine has now been tuned, which makes a substantial difference to acceleration and lower range power.

  • @jkay303
    @jkay303 Před 11 lety

    don`t worry thats even covered with the german traffic laws. you don`t have to slam your breaks, slow down at a reasonably rate and everything is fine, no cop will ever argue about that. and if so, go to the court, i don`t know of any case where a driver was fined because of that. so, everything is cool here. i mean, thats germany and i as a german would never accept such nonsense if i would be finded here because of something like that. our cops know that too, so there is no problem

  • @tastenhengst
    @tastenhengst Před 11 lety

    220 is fast. no doubts. BUT there's always someone faster. no doubts - no discussion. i'm often overtaken by cars going easily at 250kph or more. drive on the right when there is no traffic on that lane and you're safe.

      Quite a few different opinions on that one, and I still stick to my option. I saw the sign and I reacted by slowly and safely decrease the speed until it met the speed limit.

    Hatte vor geraumer Zeit einen wirklich netten Besuch, von zwei wirklich hübschen Polizistinen. Bin mit dem Auto meiner Schwester (das auf sie zugelassen ist) von Frankfurt nach Berlin, irgendwo am Arsch der Welt, in Thüringen (WTF), gleich hinter einer Geschwindigkeitsbegrenzung geblitzt worden (habs nichtmal mitbekommen). Da meine Schwester gerne Strafzettel (bis zur 2.ten Zahlungsaufforderung) nicht bezahlt und der sexy Typ auf dem Foto wohl nicht die Fahrzeughalterin ist, standen die hübschen Mädels an meiner Tür. Da auf meine Schwester verlass ist, was das nicht bezahlen von Strafzetteln angeht, sollte ich mich vielleicht nochmal in Thüringen blitzen lassen um die hübschen Polizistinen wieder zu sehn :-)
