In this video I describe the operant boxes used by Skinner (often called “Skinner boxes”) to study the relationship between different schedules of reinforcement and behavior. Then I describe 4 possible schedules of reinforcement including fixed-ratio, variable-ratio, fixed-interval, and variable-interval, as well as how random rewards created “superstitious” behaviors in pigeons.

@@PsychExamReview Quick question! I'm doing a behavioral analysis for a paper. Would increasing the amount of sleep per night be a fixed ratio schedule? I'm having trouble trying to determine what schedule that would be
@@21Emazing I think I need more context to determine this. If sleep is being used as the reinforcer (i.e. allowed to sleep after completing a certain behavior) then it could be fixed-ratio (# behaviors earns x amount of sleep time), or if sleep is allowed after a certain period of time (like every 16 hours) then it could be fixed-interval. Or is sleeping the desired behavior that is then being rewarded?

Ok, Im just rambling about what was going on my mind as you were explaining this concept. I seem to anticipate your behavior in regards to the analogies you used to explain this concept (to a fairly significant degree). To be fair, I was attempting to apply a Skinner's box on a human being. Im not truly understanding my thought processes because I have much to learn and I am nowhere near someone who has studied psychology for years.
It seems to me, that one assumption we must accept in other to use operant conditioning, is that the animal was , in a sense, self aware and it used logical behavior. In some ways, I am wrong, since a computer exhibits a consistent behavior that is logical given the information it has at hand - which does not reflect reality. It behaves as an automaton- if that makes any sense. So I am trying to connect things but I can observe that Skinner, was not aware, he was inside a Skinner box himself. As scientist, we create hypothesis, eliminate independent variables, and behave in a way that is consistent. If one does not careful, one will continue doing the same experiment over and over to get the desired response. It seems to me that he was also displaying operant conditioning in his approach to formulating his concepts. In essence, the student is in the Skinner box. The professor is likewise in a action and feedback loop.
This is just my attempt of trying to be smart- or maybe Ive been too influenced by the show "The Twilight Zone" which a common theme was that the human being was the one being observed by a higher being. We become their lab rats. In spite of these questions, operant conditioning a very useful theory. I can't wait to read about new ideas and concepts that arise from Skinner's observation.Maybe this has already been discussed in psych literature - in a more sophisticated and organize manner than myself! Who knows, I just a student.

Continuous reinforcement can be the part of schedule?
Continuous reinforcement would be a fixed-ratio schedule of 1:1 where one behavior gets one reward
