It was so nice to watch an elder gay man talk so positively about who he is now. As a 67 year old gay man I often feel that the gay community ignores older gay men. We have a lot to share because of our life experiences so kudos to you for featuring Brian and his wisdom.🤗
We do have a lot to share but it is not just the gay community is agist, society in general is ageist. A gay man is typically invisible after the age of 40 it would seem. Fine with me.
Mark, such a wonderful conversation with Brian. My husband and I will both be 70 years young April/May of next year. We've raised 3 fantastic kids and weathered so much through our life together. We became a couple at 23yrs, were/are still very active in our Gay community, be it politics, social or charitable. The AIDS crisis brought us closer together and I believe that's why we're still here today. Act Up,1st March on Washington, the AIDS Quilt project and certainly fighting to bring about the freedoms as we the LGBTQ community can experience today. Never forget those who blazed the road before you, There are many if us Rainbow Warriors still around, though maybe not as visible but still a strong presence.🌈🌈🌈🌈
I am 74 and gay, too - about a month younger than Mr. Carpenter. I envy his full head of hair! The best parts of your 70s are still breathing plus almost all the worries and anxiety you dragged around when you were younger are now irrelevant. My best friend (73, a kid) and I live in a lovely townhome with 2 master suites, so even though we are not romantic partners, I am not alone. We understand one another, because we are both retired professionals from blue collar families (which means we both worked hard to achieve a degree of success). Between the 2 of us, we have one fully functional brain! I take life one day at a time, because I seldom watch where I am walking, and it is almost certain that one day a speeding bus is gonna nail me. SPLAT!
I felt the same way - as a Finn I was too restricted to put my feelings in these in words in my own comment. (Or perhaps it is my personal upbringing that is still holding me back like Brian mentioned in the interview more so than the culture/society.)
That was excellent! I’m 65 and came out in 1974 when I was 17 in my freshman year of college. I was having a relationship with the captain of the crew team who refused to come out for fear of ridicule. I was not about to live a lie and apologize for the way I was born. 48 years later after retiring as the executive vice president and managing director of a major company I’m so glad I kicked the haters to the curb. I trust this video will inspire young LGBTQ people to do the same. Well done.
I'm almost 64, always knew I was gay, was lucky to land my 1st serious boyfriend at age 22 in 1981...we were so in love & our relationship was emotionally & physically complete...I came out with him & became a total man of life with him finding the happiness & freedom I'd dreamed about for so long. He was 29 years old & helped me to socialize & interact with both gay men in life & straight people in how to present myself to them. My struggles during the teenage years were emotionally & physically cruel. I endured, remained focused getting a college education, good jobs, & by my mid 20s I was happy & proud to tell people that being gay was my best asset. ...All of us guys who have lived a good while can easily share to the younger guys how life can become so very worth living.
It's a shame that even though things have improved a lot, it's still difficult for many young people to feel comfortable about their sexuality. I'm 79 and started coming out in the mid-seventies when I was teaching junior school. My Catholic parents were living on the other side of the world, so I decided it would do no good to come out to them as I had also relinquished my faith, a double whammy I was not prepared to deliver. I came out, however to my three siblings, and to my friends who were fantastic and equally fantastic when I needed to tell them about my HIV+ diagnosis. My decision helped me to become a campaigner for gay rights which increased my feeling that I need make apology to no-one. I have a wonderful partner 23 years my junior who I'm very proud of as he's won several work related awards. We've been together since 2009 and he has smartened me up no end. My friends tell me he's made me lose the sloppy old guy look. I've been very lucky.
As a 62 years young gay man who was closeted most of my life, I found this conversation with Mark and Brian to be so informative and emotional. I relate to you both on so many levels, yet since coming out a few years ago I am still trying to navigate how to fit into a community that I hid from for so long. The positive energy you both exuded was infectious. Its amazing given the difference in your ages how similar your experiences and life perspectives are. Thank you for sharing your journeys! ❤❤
Mark, this video hit me on so many levels being a single man in his fifties. I had two relationships and was always comfortable being single until about 2 years ago. After listening to Brian it awakened a new perspective in me which began to give me peace about my current situation. I can’t thank you enough for this video. Hey Mark as a gay who’s 56 and didn’t come out until I was 50 I have suffered anxiety and panic attacks all my adult life, I work in the transport industry as a truck driver , clearly they still are homophobic to this day. Thank you for your topics and content it’s amazing to have a great source like yourself and many others on the internet, people like me find immense gratitude for opening up about all issues that effect gay people in general , keep up the good work kind regards Jason from down under

Hi Mark, I just finished watching your video with Brian Carpenter. I am an 80-year-old man. I started watching your about 2 or 3 years ago. I love listing to you speak and tell your stories. You are such a beautiful and sweet man. I was married for 25 years and had 4 children. I was in church all those years. I did not come out until I was 46 years old. I am now married to my husband for 14 years. You always talked about things that helped me as a gay man. Thank you so much. Keep doing what you are doing.
It is great to see and hear different generations of gay men sharing experiences and supporting each other in the way that you and Brian did. Interactions between gay men of different ages are often presented in a negative way and this video was a beautiful and heartwarming counterpoint to that. I’d been a very happy introverted loner, who is gay, for 49 years. Now I’m 50; the glass bubble I’ve constructed called my life, has started to crack. Retirement and loneliness are on the horizon, and the weight of that hanging over me is really uncomfortable. Choose wisely when you’re young.

This interview hit so close to home, i will be 57 in October and am single also. I’m ok with that. I have a lot of friends but no one has ever viewed me as relationship material. I actually enjoy living alone now. I have a very fulfilling career in law enforcement which keeps me busy. I get asked frequently “aren’t you lonely?” I always respond with, I may be alone but I’m never lonely..I am always very drawn to your videos and how you interact with people. You definitely have a talent. Keep ‘em coming..♥️♥️♥️
Hey Mark- WOW! What a great interview. I can relate in SO MANY WAYS with what Brian said. I read through your comments, and as of now, I believe I am the only one who is, as Brian is, A septuagenarian. I just turned 70, in Sept., and I know how difficult it was to survive those years. He made a real success of himself. I wish that I could have been as successful as he is. I am still in the closet, but, as Brian said, I do have a GREAT internet life, which is a real life saver for me. Being widowed after a 46-yr relationship and now living in a building with all elderly straight folks, I find myself alone and back in the closet. I need to find something to be passionate about again. Many thanks to you and Brian for (hopefully) giving me the push I knew I needed! Winsboy: I can relate to your situation concerning the living arrangement at this stage of our life. Fortunately I own my home but I'm in a massive community, of very sedentary elderly straight conservative Trump lovers. The pro was it was affordable when I bought it and now its much more expensive, and the Hurricanes are making me rethink being here. Retirement for many of us gay people presents some real challenges unique to our orientation. Sadly things get compounded because we can't afford, to retire where we feel welcomed and be ourselves. . The USA is so expensive now we do the best we can where we are.
I'm an 83 year old gay man. My husband passed away almost 3 years ago. After a period of mourning , I'm getting my act together and I decided to rejoining the real world. I'm learning a lot about living again by myself.
Mark, I will admit, I have not seen your videos in a couple of years. I happened to stumble on this one, and I can’t believe how much growth has happened since then. Really enjoyed this content. Looking forward to going back to watch your previous videos and those yet to come.

Very enjoyable conversational post between you and Brian. I enjoyed where you touched on the fact that dealing with a breakup is similar to the loss of a loved one. Funny, how people never assume gay relationships are poignant. Yet, we do go through the grief, anger, etc emotions that are similar to death. Thanks, it's so nice to see a gay man age gracefully. This example takes away the fear of getting older and the realization that the remaining time is becoming clearer and clearer. Especially if you don't have a family. A video that encourages. Being gay is not a matter of choice and sometimes it feels like a burden and nothing to be proud of. Mark, you are so empathetic. Brian and I are the same age. I visited Harvard when we were 20. I wonder if he remembers the day that Massachusetts Hall was taken over by protesters? He was in the same class as one of my high school classmates with whom I connected in front of Widener Library. We're both trained as psychotherapists, too. I'm so glad you continue to connect with such a lovely guy.

What a joyful experience, it has been for me to watch this great interview. I found it so refreshing, because I happen to be a bit older than Brian, as I am only 78 young and i am totally aware of my reality. As I started to watch, I suddenly recalled that I used to set aside some folders on Mark E Miller, that I used to enjoy watching, some 2 years ago and more. I do have quite a few things in common with Brian, like his love for the theatre, although I did not get as exposed like him in the film industry , I merely had bit parts as an extra in various film, back in the seventies , included Love Story, when I lived in New York City, plus doing some commercials and was involved in a repertoire group, directed by Katherine Sergava that was taken all the way up to Harvard, with Anton Chekov's, The Seagull. As A gay man, i now live down in Venezuela since 1970 where I became a successful executive for various Insurance companies, but I managed to get involved from time to time in some stage productions, with The Caracas Theater Club, .that brought me great satisfactions, my last taking place some six years ago which is bound to be a repeat for year's end Holiday Season. I enjoy living alone, because nature has a way of taking so much of the pressure of being some kind of a maniac, I spend my time reading and listening playing some music and from time to time, inviting some friends, for dinner an a bit of sharing, I managed to share my life with some delightful people, but lasted what was suitable, as it tends to be. Please excuse me, for I did not intend to extend myself so much, yet, so it went. Congratulations to you both.
I agree whole heartedly with everything Brian said. I know we don’t know everything, but, I started to come to terms with being gay the same time y’all started posting. You both touched on heartfelt topics that really hit home for me as a retired gay veteran who served in Afghanistan. Interesting to see this and commend you for taking the time (and Brian) for making this video and sharing, showing all that age is just a number between us. Embrace others that can and will enlighten your life no matter. And speaking of labels, nothing more that I detest than people who can't live without using them. Everyone is unique and different, straight or gay or bi or whatever, and are individuals whom all live and act differently. Geez. Oh, Brian actually looks like a cousin of mine. He is a cool guy.
I'm also 74 and relate to what your guest had to say. The Secret: The Joy of life is to be found in Each Moment Lived. NOW is the moment. Speaking about editing an interview, I did an interview with a person who said he'd let me see the edited version before he posted it, but he didn't. He just edited it the way he wanted to and posted it. The part that I am not pleased with, it that he didn't keep his word. I believe if you say you are going to do something, you have to do it, or you are a liar.

My Catholic parents were living on the other side of the world, so I decided it would do no good to come out to them as I had also relinquished my faith, a double whammy I was not prepared to deliver. I came out, however to my three siblings, and to my friends who were fantastic and equally fantastic when I needed to tell them about my HIV+ diagnosis. My decision helped me to become a campaigner for gay rights which increased my feeling that I need make apology to no-one. I have a wonderful partner 23 years my junior who I'm very proud of as he's won several work related awards. We've been together since 2009 and he has smartened me up no end. My friends tell me he's made me lose the sloppy old guy look. I've been very lucky.

You are such a beautiful and sweet man. I was married for 25 years and had 4 children. I was in church all those years. I did not come out until I was 46 years old. I am now married to my husband for 14 years. You always talked about things that helped me as a gay man. Thank you so much. Keep doing what you are doing.
It is great to see and hear different generations of gay men sharing experiences and supporting each other in the way that you and Brian did. Interactions between gay men of different ages are often presented in a negative way and this video was a beautiful and heartwarming counterpoint to that. This interview hit so close to home, i will be 57 in October and am single also. I’m ok with that. I have a lot of friends but no one has ever viewed me as relationship material. I actually enjoy living alone now. I have a very fulfilling career in law enforcement which keeps me busy. I get asked frequently “aren’t you lonely?” I always respond with, I may be alone but I’m never lonely..I am always very drawn to your videos and how you interact with people. I read through your comments, and as of now, I believe I am the only one who is, as Brian is, A septuagenarian. I just turned 70, in Sept., and I know how difficult it was to survive those years. Winsboy: I can relate to your situation concerning the living arrangement at this stage of our life. Fortunately I own my home but I'm in a massive community, of very sedentary elderly straight conservative Trump lovers. The pro was it was affordable when I bought it and now its much more expensive, and the Hurricanes are making me rethink being here. Retirement for many of us gay people presents some real challenges unique to our orientation. Sadly things get compounded because we can't afford, to retire where we feel welcomed and be ourselves. . The USA is so expensive now we do the best we can where we are.

Thanks, it's so nice to see a gay man age gracefully. This example takes away the fear of getting older and the realization that the remaining time is becoming clearer and clearer. Especially if you don't have a family. A video that encourages. Being gay is not a matter of choice and sometimes it feels like a burden and nothing to be proud of. Mark, you are so empathetic. He was in the same class as one of my high school classmates with whom I connected in front of Widener Library. We're both trained as psychotherapists, too. What a joyful experience, it has been for me to watch this great interview. I found it so refreshing, because I happen to be a bit older than Brian, as I am only 78 young and i am totally aware of my reality. As I started to watch, I suddenly recalled that I used to set aside some folders on Mark E Miller, that I used to enjoy watching, some 2 years ago and more. I do have quite a few things in common with Brian, like his love for the theatre, although I did not get as exposed like him in the film industry , I merely had bit parts as an extra in various film, back in the seventies , included Love Story, when I lived in New York City, plus doing some commercials and was involved in a repertoire group, directed by Katherine Sergava that was taken all the way up to Harvard, with Anton Chekov's, The Seagull. As A gay man, i now live down in Venezuela since 1970 where I became a successful executive for various Insurance companies, but I managed to get involved from time to time in some stage productions, with The Caracas Theater Club, .that brought me great satisfactions, my last taking place some six years ago which is bound to be a repeat for year's end Holiday Season. I enjoy living alone, because nature has a way of taking so much of the pressure of being some kind of a maniac, I spend my time reading and listening playing some music and from time to time, inviting some friends, for dinner an a bit of sharing, I managed to share my life with some delightful people, but lasted what was suitable, as it tends to be.
Please excuse me, for I did not intend to extend myself so much, yet, so it went. Congratulations to you both.
I agree whole heartedly with everything Brian said. I know we don’t know everything, but, I started to come to terms with being gay the same time y’all started posting. I'm also 74 and relate to what your guest had to say. The Secret: The Joy of life is to be found in Each Moment Lived. NOW is the moment. Speaking about editing an interview, I did an interview with a person who said he'd let me see the edited version before he posted it, but he didn't. He just edited it the way he wanted to and posted it. The part that I am not pleased with, it that he didn't keep his word. I believe if you say you are going to do something, you have to do it, or you are a liar.
