Description: Thanks to Sebastian Williams for supporting the channel and suggesting I do an ancient war campaign. I had fun researching this one.
*Attila (thanks for correcting the spelling guys) and his Huns seemingly came out of nowhere, but modern Hungary (the eastern edges of Europe) is really their origin. He nearly sacked the entire Roman Empire, and certainly played a key role in weakening it, as the throne was officially usurped by a German (Odoacer) less than 30 years after Atilla's sweeping campaign against Rome.

Imagine it is Winter Semester in a Midwest college (like in Wisconsin or Michigan). You are taking a Monday 8:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Ancient Roman History course lectured by this guy. It would be absolute torture to stay awake.

Just for peoples information, the Emperor in the year 0BC was actually Augustus, Julius Caesar's nephew. Caesar himself (who btw was not an emperor but a dictator. Augustus was the first emperor) died in 44BC.
Although actually there is no year 0, only 1BC then 1AD 👀

The points about Rome's faults are pretty striking, for example Goldsworthy notes that the 'good' emperors, despite their flaws, often showed an almost super human interest in actually governing an enormous empire beyond any realistic expectation of most contemporary politicians. Both Hadrian and Trajan for example (again despite their flaws), left excessive letters for the period, inquiring governors like Pliny the Younger, concerning often specific details about the provinces. But alas these 'good' emperors were often the rule to the exception. In an empire that was for the most time governed by a very small elite, that had generally excelled at its job, proven by the longetivity of the empire, but were ultimately too small and prone to corruption. Especially in a system that allowed for gross corruption, even in republican times corrupt governors were often tried, but also usually not found guilty, since the public opinion was often swayed towards the accused, rather than the accuser.

@@LetsFindOut1 No problem, just my opinion though :p, if you're looking for more book Idea's concerning Rome, Caesaer's account of the gallic wars have been a classic since the Middle Ages (his details have often been proven more accurate than most interpretations throughout the Middle Ages). Otherwise some of Goldsworthy's books about the legion, the Pax Romana or his biographies about Augustus and Caesar could be good materials. Although especially Goldworthy's tend to be pretty long for just a light read so those might take more episodes or a synopsis instead.
Don’t want to be too nitpicky, and I know LFOASMR said history isn’t his strongest subject, but around 6:34 he said “they would attack, conquer and assimilate....other tribes in the Gaelic, Scandinavian, and Norse lands”. They never conquered what are today the Scandinavian nations. Arminius the German ensured that, after he defeated a Roman force consisting of 3 legions in the Teutoburg forest. Look up some documentaries on it, “how the Germanic barbarians annihilated Rome’s legions | Varian disaster : teutoburg | timeline” is a good one. Rome would never push further north or east in Europe after their defeat in that forest.

Cavalry v. Calvary.

Cavalry is horse mounted fighters.
Calvary is a hill in Jerusalem.
But they tend to get mixed up when speaking.
Here’s how I remember how to say it.
The US Army’s 1st Cavalry Division is known as the “First Cav”. It’s snappy. It’s got some punch. Bam! Cav!
There’s no L there. It’s not First Cal, it’s First Cav.
(The word Cavalry is from the French word cavalerie, itself derived from "cheval" meaning "horse")
Can I say “Cav” as a substitute for what I am saying? It’s cavalry.
Are we talking about a crucifix or religion? Probably Calvary.
And you’d probably never say “Cal” as a shortened version of Calvary. It would just sound strange. You don’t need a short, snappy nickname for Calvary.
You can run this test as you’re speaking to get the right one. Cav -v- Cal.
It might not be very noticeable except to veterans, history buffs, French speakers, horsemen, theology nerds, etc. but it woke me up 😂. So I thought I’d weigh in.
